Hello,

I'm moving to Sheffield, hopefully the end of October with my partner and our baby. Leaving grotty ole London behind - Hurrah! I've been lurking on the forum for a few months now and reading everyones posts has made me really look forward to moving...

We're looking to rent a 3-bed house somewhere easily accessible for the Uni. (Woodseats, Crookes, Nether Green?) I'm coming up the first week in October to look for a place. I've got a list of all the letting agents, but we really want to avoid them if possible.

I've just subscribed to the Telegraph, Star and Ad-mag to try and find out about Landlords letting privately - is there any other way of finding out about private lets? (apart from asking on here of course!)

Any advice appreciated - just want to check I've thought of everything as I'm finding all things need to be planned with military precision when there's an 8-month old baby around!

Thanks,

Suzanne

You could try visiting the areas and looking at notices in the newsagents etc. In some areas there are loads, in other areas, none.

Shop windows are good - particularly for the area you are looking for the following would be a good starting point:

Martins at Broomhill
the Post Office at Crookes
the newsagents opposite The Ball pub at Crookes
Baxters News at Crookes

with a car you can cover all of these in about half an hour then go for a coffee and something to eat in Hercule with your list and a mobile phone.

Artfullodger.co.uk has lots of info and you can search by postcode. Dont want to put you off Woodseats at all (fellow Southerners always welcome!) but its not very convenient for getting to the Uni - Unless you mean Hallam as we're on a direct bus route

Oh dear - is Woodseats not on a direct bus route to the Uni?....It sounds so nice as well! I've got a bus map of Sheffield but it doesn't make alot of sense and the person who sent it to me told me it was 'probably out of date'!

Maybe we'll stick to Crookes, Walkley area....

If anybody else has any suggestions as to good areas for a couple with a baby, that would be great...we're both cyclists but I've heard the hills in Sheffield can be 'challenging', so we'll need good buses as well...

Cheers,

Suzanne

Which uni do you mean? and which site?

There are two universities in Sheffield: The University of Sheffield, for which Broomhill and Crookes would be convenient, also Walkley.

There is also Sheffield Hallam University, for which you might like to consider Hunter's bar area, very popular with students, lots of buses down Ecclesall Road to the campus at Collegiate Crescent and the City campus. My son is a student at Sheffield Hallam and loves the Ecclesall Road/Hunters bar area. He is in his third year of living there ... plus you could push the pram around Endcliffe Park.

Something else I picked up whilst in the lettings market ...

Do a google search on Estate agents with properties to let in Sheffield, or Sheffield Estate agents, or Lettings Agents Sheffield. There are many estate agents now which specialise in lettings in Sheffield, with it being a University City.

Also, if you make a visit to Sheffield, and drive round the Ecclesall Road area, you will find lots of properties with boards up advertising student houses for let and giving a number. These tend to be landlords who own multiple properties within the area.

Dont forget to post an area on here and we can all let you know what we think!

How about checking in the Sheffield property guide? I think it's not just for buying houses.
Good luck anyway.
