We're moving from Wiltshire to the Sheffield area soon, we were thinking of the Chesterfield/Dronfield areas and/or surrounding villages. This is what I need to find out..

1) Are there any partucularly cheap areas around? Cheap but nice. Schooling not an issue - just want to know of your opinions of the best places to live (without being toooo upmarket !!!) or is it all much of a muchness.

2) I'm pretty much sorted job wise, but my partner would be looking to find a job as soon as we've moved up there, any suggestions for agencies or big companies to approach for work? Any work that is, nothing specialised just anything for the money !! Good rates of pay....

3) What are the major estate agents around for buying a house so that I can get us put on mailing lists for property?

Any help greatly appreciated...... thanks.

Hi
I lived in Dronfield from the age of 5 until 28 ( I am now 31). I am now renting in Sheffield and would give anything to be able to afford a house in Dronfield.
I lived at the top part called Dronfield Woodhouse and I can honestly say it is wonderful.
It's an extremely pleasant place, full of lovely people and right between Sheffield and Chesterfield so great for getting in to a local town.
It is also about a 5 minute drive to the Peak District.
I really don't think you could go wrong moving there - I am sure you would love it.
It is also extremely low as far as crime goes so no need whatsoever to worry about that.
I know that schools aren't a problem but they are great too.

As far as big companies, there is one called Ufi (they run learndirect) that has just gone through a major restructure and now has a lot of vacancies. It is based in Sheffield and I believe Hays recruitment look after all of their recruitment.
I hope this helps.

I lived in chesterfield untill i was 25 (i'm now 27). The area my parents live in (Linacre Woods / Ashgate hights) is nice and seems to have had house prices dragged down because of its proxcimity to a council estate. The council estate that it is near (Holme Hall) is not bad at all really and a lot of the houses on it are now privately owned now anyway.

I now live in Stocksbridge which is totally the other side of Sheffield and is nice but also your money goes so much further. House prices in Chesterfield have shot up recently as people realised how easy it is to commute to sheffield.

One of the biggest employers in Chesterfield is the Royal Mail - they have a few big administration centres there. They offten take on with short term contracts that become permanant and its is seemingly easy to move jobs inside the organisation.
