What are the lines near the speed camera for?
And another daft question, what happens when two cars pass next to a camera, but one is speeding. How do they know which one of the cars was speeding?

If one of the cars was close enough behind the person in front to get caught on the same picture, they deserve to get a ticket anyway.
The lines are a specific distance apart so that the person looking at the photo can tell from however many lines you've gone past in the time between the two photos how fast you were going.
As for the second point, the one going faster will have gone over more lines!
The equation is speed = distance over time (I think).

And, can I tag onto Sony's question...... does anyone know how those speed cameras work where the camera points towards the approaching vehicle, but the white lines are painted on the road a short distance past the camera?
I think you'll find, redrobbo, that there are lines both sides of the camera so it can be turned round if necessary.
lines are on both sides of the road.if they're not then the camera ain't working.
How about the new speed cameras that are coming out that can check your speed from a mile away? How does that work

Thanks Saxon + willman. Next time I drive through Dinting (near Glossop) I'll check out if there are lines either side of the cameras I had in mind.
A mate told me they use the lines to show that you were speeding over a set distance
If it was a Gatso
if it was a Truvleo or how ever you spell that name,
you break the line, if you're over your caught
:suspect:
ok
gatso - flashes you from behind. loads of white lines piture shows how far you travelled.
truvelo - no flash - gets u in either direction(sure i've typed this b4). usually 3 lines as u enter "the zone" if u r speeding when u cross the lines you're nicked.
watch fro the ones at stocksbridge they time u through a series of cameras. do the mile too quick get a ticket.slowing for the camera after doing 110mph between cameras makes no difference, and believe me i know.

I didn't know the 3 closely spaced lines before a Truvelo camera were pressure sensor pads that record your speed. The camera merely takes your (and your car's) picture if the pressure pads tell it to.
