View Full Version : Emergency Medical Technician
Im a little odd, but i want to train as an Emergency Medical Technician, for no other reason than i just want to!
I was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere that i could train as an EMT?
I have thought about becoming an NHS EMT/Paramedic, but SYAS do not have any vacancies at the moment, am im not sure if i could handle the lifting of patients etc.
Any info would be greatly apreciated!

depending on what skill level you have , a good place to start would be your local st john division , keep your skill level up and improve it, st john work with the NHS , doing 1st responders

Sheffette 20-09-2005, 10:17 Try Sheffield Hallam University. My sis was telling me Paramedics train there...they even have a huge theatre with projection screen to create realistic accident scenarios.
I don't know whether its a course run by the uni, or whether they just use the facilities but giving them a bell probably wouldn't hurt and they could point you in the right direction.

Is that an Ambulanceman?
Hallam Uni run a paramedic degree course. It is a direct entry to become a parademic and you are guaranteed a job at the end of the course. It is a 2 year course and your fees are paid for by the NHS and you also get a bursary, which is like a student loan only you don't pay it back.
An EMT is basically the assistant to the paramedic who is basically a mobile emergency doctor. You could go the other route by applying direct to become an EMT or you could start by working as an ambulance bus driver taking patients to hospital appointments and working your way up. This may be your best option if you don't want to be a student for 2 years because to work for the ambulance service you must show that you have had previous experience of working within the caring profession.
HottyMcBuff 20-09-2005, 14:57 The diploma course is going into its third in take and is just about finding its feet as an entry to the role. The first group of paramedics to undertake the role are now entering full time employment so keep an eye out for them.
This option is a good one, but only if you are in a position to survive on £466 a month for two years. You will be a para as opposed to an EMT at the end of the course, so really depends on what you want.
SYAS are not recruiting at the mo for EMT, but EMAS (East mids) and London are, if you don't mind moving.
It is possible to gain EMT qualification through the private sector, and I do know people who know people if you want any numbers etc, but I would suggest a good grounding in first aid before electing this track.
So in the mean time, St Johns, Red Cross (both voluntary) or one of the private ambulance services in the region (would be best if you got a first aid cert first though) who will pay you for your services and with whom you could progress to EMT level.

This is more what i am after, as i am not yet ready to work in the NHS, i just want to train as an EMT for my own purposes.
Can you PM me with any info?
