It's reckoned that man will be back on the moon by 2018, that gives us lot 13 years to get the C.V in for the trip!
My opening line would be ...... I think I would make a good astronaut because I've never missed an episode of the Clangers. What would yours be?

Perhaps its the US's solution to overcrowding at Camp X-Ray - he's sending them to the penal colony on the moon.

I seriously don't believe that NASA would even consider anyone who's watched the Clangers. They will go for the Best on this one, for people like me. People who realise what a photon torpedo is, and know that to reactivate a failed warp drive all you need is a bit of Lt Ohura's knicker elastic and a monkey wrench.:heyhey:

Why should we want to go back to the moon?

You can see the new spaceship etc here :

Can't wait to see it go up ! 4 people at a time will go to the moon, and 6 to Mars. Capsule is 3 times size of original moon landings capsule. All for the bargain sum of 100 billion dollars [or so CNN said the other day]

Erm, so we can start building a moon space station for further launches which go deeper into our solar system.
It makes for a better launch pad than earth if we wanted to go to Mars or beyond.

I think this is an excellent idea - we need something to look towards for the future, after all.

If I was offered the chance to go in to space I would in an instant.

Once we get to the Moon - and stay there in the form of a colony - we can start finally spreading out in to the Solar System. The work done on Mars in the last year or so by the robots could be done by a manned mission in a few days - and give us much more as well.

Sooner or later we'll come up with a propulsion system that will allow us to get out in to deep space, and that will be a darn sight easier to develop if we have places like the Moon and Mars to work from, rather than the deep gravity well of the Earth.

On the down side, if I were a Slug Alien on a moon of Saturn, I'd start running (or sliming) now... :)

I've watched every episode of "Star Trek" - I think that entitles me to experience the real thing!

The title of the thread "Man back on the moon" implies that man has been there before..........

<cue can of worms opening> :D

Exactly, the moon?! Pah, we've been there, let's put a man on Mars! Lets see if HG Wells's description of Martians was correct or not :P

Yeah, I forgot about that.

One thing about the future moon expedition is that it should allow us the opportunity to focus on other things apart from global poverty and climate change. Now we can direct many billions of dollors at this aspirational challenge!. Why do we think that we are responsible enough to embark on Space exploration, when we haven't even sorted out our own planets problems!

Whats the point going back to the moon? wouldn't the money be better spent on finishing the international space station..unless there is an alien base on the darkside of the moon :suspect:

The question is did we realy go to the moon in the first place????:suspect:

Look ahead, for the human race.

Planetary extinction is not only inevitable, it could easily be around the cosmological corner.

It's eggs and baskets.

So getting established on an airless moon is a very small beginning to that colossal task of a self sustaining earth independent colony.

On the other hand

It's also a good opportunity for the USA to send weapons into space. (and try them out)

Anyone well established on the moon has an inexhaustible supply of ballistic missiles.

"Bomb Iran? Hell no, we'll just drop rocks on them. It's cheaper"

On the gripping hand

42% of the moon is made of oxygen, with most of the rest of it made from silicon and iron, and of course it sits in complete vacuum (more or less) - as long as you're not squeamish about using nukes in space, then you can undertake some pretty incredible manufacturing processes, which could make you a serious competitor to earth in some industries.

Water is going to be a big problem though.

The Russians are to replace their Soyuz fleet with a Clipper that will hold 6 people

and the ESA wanna get in on the act - so if you guys fail to get to the moon, at least you may be able to fly around the thing

Whats the betting that they will try to do some sort of landing and steal the Americans limelight [hope they do ]
