Go on everyone, nominate what you think is the most aesthetically appealing structure in the city!!

I nominate Ranmoor church:D
The third tallest structure in Sheffield (200ft) it can be seen from the rest of the city and it's a good symbol in the skyline to help me remember which side of the city I'm on when I get lost :)

I know it may be an obvious choice but I like the Town Hall.

Quite like the Western Park Museum/Art Gallery.

Lyceum Theartre is very good too - both inside and outside.

Winter Gardens has to be up there too.

And I quite like the facade of 'The Ship' pub in Shalesmoor.

I personally like the look of the new winter gardens!
However (althought this isn't sheffield) Chesterfield Bent Spiral Church has always been a favourite of mine!

The Classic Rock Bar.....

Other than that I like the square which hosts the theatres of our fine city and the shapes of the buildings around it. The town hall is lovely from the peace gardens viewpoint.

Apparently, it's crooked because the wood it was originally built with was damp, and warped as it dried. Still, it makes for an interesting feature!

I quite like the lights on the roof of Meadowhell at night when approaching it on the tram... also the Cooling Towers nearby

Also love the picture of the Miner on the side of the building near the co-op in town

I like Wharncliffe House on Bank Street (well, the old bit anyway).

And what's now the No1 Oriental Buffet on Commercial Street. I think the Ibis next door is really well done too, even though it's only plain. When you arrive off the Parkway, the trees outside and the nice building next door make it look a bit like Amsterdam.

And I like the whole of East Parade and St James' Row, and Figtree Lane.

No one's mentioned the City Hall yet, which is fab.

And a walk on Surrey Street takes you past some great old Victorian buildings, and if you look up at Channing Hall when the lights are on, the inside looks amazing. And then eventually you get to the Central Library which is lovely when you take a bit of time to look at it.

I also like Midland Station (apart from the all the nasty breeze blocks) but I know it took a bit of a pasting on another thread so I won't push my luck on that one.

I can't believe so many are nominating the Winter Gardens! It looks like an over sized Armadillo. An absolute monstrosity in my opinion.

I'm not sure about my favourite building. I like Bishops house though because that tudor style is one of my favourites for houses.

I have two (1) St Maries Cathedral on Norfolk Row Nicely tucked away but it's spire can be seen for miles,a true tasty piece of city centre architecture and (2) The City Hall with it's enormous pillars it looks like it will stand there for ever. Have a good look at it and you can still see the scars on it from the shrapnel damage courtesy of the German blitz in the war. living history you can still touch.

The Innovation Centre, Portobello.
The NCPM, CIQ.
Hopwells, Handsworth.
Natwest / BDP, Carver St.
Stoddart Building, Sheffield Hallam University, Arundel Gate.
Cole Brothers, Barkers Pool.
Persistance Works, CIQ.

Winter Gardens without doubt for me. It's such a daring design it could have gone either way - but it's a  from me.

The tinsley viaduct and cooling towers, viewed from the tram station at Meadowhall. Especially if you get there early enough to see the sun rising.

The Millennium Galleries, especially when lit up at night.

The Lyceum Theatre.

Sheffield University's Arts Tower- that's not a joke - I like the way it stands proud over the city, and can be seen for miles around.

Actually, i like most of the buildings in sheffield, the winter gardens, town hall, arts tower, the green glass building next to the bt building, the curved glass atrium on the uni building near the arts tower, etc............

i'm new to all this, so apologies if it's been done before, but there's all this talk of sheffield being untidy and more like a town, and also best bus route, steepest hill etc.
So, i'm asking what's the nicest building in this city?
And if anyone is interested, my top 3 are..
1. Steel City House at the bottom of West Street
2. King Edward VII Upper School, Clarkehouse ROad
3. University Arts Tower, Western Bank
Just thought i'd share it with you all....

I love quite a few old buildings in the city centre - the old court buildings including the really old one on Bank St. as well as the city library (my kids know it as the Ghostbuster's building as they think it resembles the one in the film of the same name). The old Town Hall is lovely, they did a great job with it on Fright Night with lighting and sound effects.

I noticed another building for the first time just last week as I was busy sorting out my shopping in Wilkinsons at the Haymarket. Next time you're down that way have a look at the building just above the Cash Generators - either they've recently revealed the upper part or I've been walking around with blinkers on - it's a really beautiful building. If only the shop fronts had an olde worlde look about them that would make it so much better.

Viva la old stuff!

The "steel worker" building just near Snig Hill police HQ.

But my favourite has to be red building edging peace gardens, now converted into flats and retail.

Not sure if it really counts as a proper building, but the winter gardens quite appeals to me. Very different architecture to the surrounds, but I think it fits in quite nicely.

Or maybe I'm just glad to see anything instead of the damned egg-box building.

I'm pleased to inform you the Vestry Hall (http://www.burngreavemessenger.org.uk/40apr04/vestryhall.shtml) is going to be redeveloped, and should be back in action by September 2005.

Don't mean to be funny or anything....

I really do hope they don't let the Vestry Hall be put into public use, because when the funding dries up it will end up back in a state of disrepair. In all honesty the people of the area had their chance with the place and I really don't think they deserve another with that particular place, although such recreational activities could be housed in the ex-DSS office on Spital Hill which BNDFC have purchased.

I think it would probably be more wise to sell to a private developer, who will not only be able to make a profit from it and renovate, but equally get private investment in the area from people wanting to buy, and before you go off and think nobody will, take a trip up Burngreave Road and see how many for sale signs you see.

MODS - surely this thread should be merged with this one (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6068) ? Apologies for not "reporting it" but the limited text field means a URL of that length can't be used to reference the other thread.

There's a bar on Division Street - I think it is Lloyds - that is in a great building. It has some fantastic heads sculpted on the outside. Shame the bar is so rubbish, though

Is there a worst bar in Sheffield thread?

The Cathedral looks dated and awful IMO.

There's a pub by the coach station - I think it;s the oldest building in Sheffield - which I like best.

Unless someone tells me they knocked it down years ago....
