View Full Version : What a great city you have
your so lucky to live in a multi-cultural socitey, I'm stuck in a village with only white people.
Whats it like to hear hundreds of different languages being spoken at your local pub
Hi Ivory
Although it is a multi cultural society in which we live, we rarely hear all the languages at the same time......except when we have had one to many beers.
Where do you live? and please tell us more about it.
youwhatref 19-09-2005, 14:53 Ivory,
Although Sheffield is known to have a multi-cultural society and certain areas do have this, many areas dont and segregation between communities is clearly visible.
I will say that some races more than others do integrate better but rarely apart from the city centre do you see a wide range of langauges spoken in a pub
Sorry it's not the answer you want and maybe some will disagree.

Dunno, can't say I ever HAVE heard more than English spoken in my local.
Unless you count Yorkshire as a separate language to English. :)
Joe
I have just come home on the bus and there were at least three languages being spoken.
You ask what's it like?
Warm and friendly, I'd say.
It is comforting to know that multiculturalism can be just people getting on with their lives, needing the bus, schools and the supermarket.
I think that this happens in Sheffield.
Living in Walkley is cool because not only do you get a decent ethnic mix you also get a lot of foreign students around here. I like to here many different languages spoekn

What rubbish, this is england and those who CHOOSE to come here should learn OUR language and speak it as well.
We are most certainly NOT lucky to live in this city of multi language at all,we are losing the one main component that bonds this country together OUR language.
My guess is your not British born,if you were you would not make such stupid comments.

Its called an opinion you know I represent thousands who share my beleifs, the votes of 7,000 people in the last election here in Sheffield.
I love my culture and heritage, maybe you ought to try to love it as well??
Hey you guys are real pessimists mourning the passing of this thread; it hasnt happened yet and I hope it's not the 2nd one I'll have posted on today to be pulled for reasons I dont understand.
So let's just carry on with the main topic. When I went in to town this afternoon I heard some people speaking French which was really great and cheered me up enormously. :D
I do think it's a bit ignorant when we English people go to foreign parts and cant/dont speak a word of their language though. While I quite agree it is important to love our culture cant we love other people, their cultures and languages at the same time?
Where are you Ivory and what language do people speak there?
Mod:
Ivory - we don't appreciate trolling around here, especially when it has a blatant racist slant.
