 Here we go again! :help:

Sheffield Fayre will be taking place on the August Bank Holiday this year, in the place of Sheffield Show (we just filled the gap!)

All the great stuff you remember from last year will be happening - re-enactment, fair, markets, community and craft stalls...you name it. And FREE ENTRY to top it all off.

I'll use this thread to keep you all updated on progress. But how about some good ideas on how to promote the Sheffield Forum this year as well? We only have 8 months to go... ;)

Any comments and suggestions more than welcome...

Is there any chance of having Archery lessons there?

There probably some saftey issues there but I do think there should be more to do apart from the fun fair.

Id love to see the Sheffield Fayre be like when the sheffield show was good  (circa 1996 and before)

Massive amounts of "trade" things, and i dont mean market stall I mean Companies showing off their latest goods and freebies lots of freebies :D (sheffield show used to keep me in decent pens for an entire year! )

and as I said before, more bins

There was swordmanship lessons (NOT fencing!) there last year. That looked like good fun.

John: I will suggest the archery idea when we have chosen the company to do the re-enactment. I could also sound out the Rangers, as they sometimes provide archery at events.

RPG: I brought up the bins, and the issue was duly noted. The committee will request more bins for this year's event.

Falconry displays and lessons would be interesting, don't know about anyone else but it's something I've always fancied a go at but never had the opportunity.

I'm the manager of Printing.com on Division Street. I was approached some time back regarding providing promotional material to promote the sheffield forum.

No one came back to me about it at the time but we do have a January Sale on at the moment with tons of items at massively discounted prices.

How about planning ahead for the Sheffield Fayre by ordering your promotion whilst the prices are so low (e.g. 10k credit card size flyers for around £80)?

Give me a call (0114 273 0614) and i'll see what i can do to help out.

Sorry about the impromptu advert but then it is to the benefit of the Forum, which is a great idea incidentally ;-))

Hi

HURRAH for the Sheffie fayre!

What about live bands? I don't mean the loud metal poppy type things. Anyone heard of the Medieavil Baebes?? I think they could go down really well with the re-enactment. They do the joust thing every year!

Just a thought. it may not be possible this year!!

PM sent off to Cosy for my shop stall again!

What about having a community stall for Sheffield Forum??? Who would be willing to man it? We could do it in shifts?

Indigo: sounds like a good opportunity for some inexpensive promo stuff for the Fayre. Perhaps you could give us an idea of the sort of things that are available/viable, considering the lack of funds I suspect might be a problem.
I'm aware that Printing.Com has been a supplier/sponsor for the Fayre, so a good link/opportunity?

Moon: I definitely think we should have a community stall. Maybe Indigo can point us in the direction of things we could provide on it to advertise the Forum. I've also had a few ideas about large posters with intriguing quotes from various threads that will entice people in to see what it's all about...
I reckon there are prob'ly enough people on the Forum who'd be willing to man the stall for an hour here or half an hour there...

Any vols?

Sorry guys, but unless you have some serious dosh to donate, I doubt we could afford the Medieval Babes.:(

Still, Rich, there should be plenty of medieval babes there - they just won't be singing.;)

Sounds wicked - is there like battle re-enactment and stuff??
And are there any falconery displays????? They are wicked too.

Can't we have a plea for some other voluntary music. What about schools etc????

Also - where will it be????

Keep us posted on everything then.

Sheffield Fayre 2004, August 29th and 30th

This third annual event takes place in Norfolk Heritage Park. Organised by members of the community as well as Sheffield City Council, the Rotary Club and Sheffield Wildlife Trust, it is a free entry, non-profit making event with an emphasis on community, children, and horticulture.

A popular part of Sheffield Fayre is it's yearly gathering of re-enactors, who provide a living history experience for visitors, including insights into battles and domestic life in the past.

The horticulture and craft section is one of the biggest in Sheffield, and is open to anyone who reckons they have green fingers or a crafty streak.

Last year there was also a community tent and a craft tent, market stalls, and a large funfair. All of these elements should return in 2004.

We will be looking into entertainments by schools, etc, music, bands, and the rest...any specific ideas, let me know.

I will post up contact details for booking a stall and receiving a copy of the horticulture and craft schedule as soon as we are ready.
In the meantime, feel free to contact me via PM if you have any burning questions no-one else here would be interested in.

SHEFFIELD FORUM: Let's have some ideas on how we can promote the Forum at this big event.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but WHERE is it gonna be held??

Rich

Somewhere up Norfolk Park apparently.

Moon Maiden

Actually IN Norfolk Park!

Shame about the baebes - I wonder if there are any other young budding singers liek them who could do with a slot? I know there is a website called angelic voices who specialise in showcaseing singers with styles like Enya and stuff!

What about the music students at the uni? Or even the Sword Dancers of Sheffield!!! That would be great for those who cannot get to see their display on boxing day!

Norfolk Heritage Park is in Norfolk Park. It's nestled between City Road, Park Grange Road, Guildford Avenue, and Norfolk Park Road. If you'd like to look it up on multimap, etc, the postcode area is S2 - sorry I don't have time to make a link for you right now...

Now that you're all snowbound, how about thinking up some ideas for Forum participation in the Fayre?

Warm yourselves with thoughts of a sunny August day...

I could really use your help if you attended SF2003...or if you just have an opinion about this:

The fairground doesn't seem to have been very popular at all over the last two years. Has anybody got any suggestions for what they like to see in a fairground at an event like this?

Should it be:
A) Children's rides, coconut shies, hook a duck, etc
B) More exciting things like bigger rides
C) Not there at all

And was it
A) Just too expensive to bother with when so much other stuff is free
B) In the wrong place

We have to make some major decisions about it, and seeing that it's a community show, I reckon we need community input. So, Sheffielders, what would you like to see at YOUR fayre?

hiya cosy,

Personally i'm not a big fan of fairgrounds. I used to like them when i was little - they'd be games for 50p where you'd win fish and the rides would be cool like bumper cars. But as i got older they used to charge silly prices like £5 for 3 throws to try to win a prize at hook-a-duck or something! The prizes were usually crappy, and you wouldn't really know what to do with a giant, bright green bear. But then the helta skelta rides they have in the town centre seem popular + the big wheel near the peace gardens was great - esp coz it was so cheap.

If people have gotten in for free they might not mind paying for rides, and hopefully there will be a bigger audience from far + wide since shef fayre replaces the other fair.

Would the other stall holders complain about the noise, or maybe the fairground can open later - towards the afternoon + evening? + we can have fireworks!

So far they won't let us open the fairground at night, which drives the Fair people crazy, as that is where they get the most money, they reckon. But we do have people camping out (the re-enactors - and I can see how it would be a major security risk as well as a real noise issue for them.
We simply can't afford the extra security problems. Saying that, there are some of us who would love to see an evening firework display. Maybe I'll start a revolution...:D

Ever thought of hiring a stock where you put your head through and get locked in whilst wet sponges are thrown at the victim?

I'm sure some forum members would gladly take to the stocks while I take their pictures.
