View Full Version : Who plays guitar and what do you have?
hi
i've been playing about 4 or 5 years now(badly),but have acquired some nice axes, they are-
simon & patrick,mahogany,beautiful bright tone.
hofner president,circa,1960,sounds acky,needs stringing badly.
marlin (strat copy)
commodore (circa 1970) f-holed semi acoustic
hondo (gibson hummingbird copy)also needs strings
hohner (les paul copy)
eros nevada 12string acoustic
harmony sovereign (bought for my son)
art & lutherie (also residing with my son)
i have a few more consigned to the loft as my missus was fed up of falling over them
john.
I've been playing 20+ years and have:
Ibanez Roadstar: been playing it since 1984.
Gordy Redshift Custom: Bought s/h from wavelength about 8 years ago. Pretty Rare, the company became Gordon Smith.
Norman acoustic: A cheap Simon & Patrick I think.
Honer 5 string bass: I try to avoid the low 5th string as it buzzes too much.
I play it through a Marshall JTM 30 part valve combo.
GimmeSomePK 19-09-2005, 05:32 Started playing about 8 years ago, completely self taught and never really played with anyone else so plateaued fairly quickly after open/bar chords and blues/pentatonic leads.
Not played much recently and currently have:
Hohner Accoustic with tobacco sunburst finish - nice sounding, nice looking guitar, swapped it for a Levi's shirt with a girl who didn't know better.
Tanglewood Strat copy with cherry sunburst finish - Decent economical strat copy that does what it says on the tin but looks pretty too.
-PK-
I have A photo's of my guitars (without amplifiers in the pics)
GUITARS 2 (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a41/viking999/guitars2.jpg)
I've been playing for 2.5 years, and have a Gibson SG standard, ebony black, it sounds great... :headbang:
In danger of sounding pretentious: its not what you play, its how you play!
I've been playing 10 years I think (scary).
I have an ibanez jazzy thing - can't remember what model or owt - sounds lovely throught the right amp.
I also have a hoyer acoustic which I don't like.
carcrash 19-09-2005, 10:34 Cherry red 335.
Fender strat
Eko 12 string
Antonia Folk guitar
Aria pro 2 bass
Rockwood bass
Hohner classical guitar
Squire strat
Madolin
I have got a couple of amps but I've not used them for about 3 years sincve I brought a line 6 pod.
I use effects ocasionally, Crybaby wah, Big muff, boss digital delay and some other bits and bobs
Squier Strat left at home in Sheffield
with me in Manchester:
Ibanez S470... lovely thin neck, love it :D
Roland 30w Cube amp
Boss V-Wah pedal
random volume pedal
looking at buying a new guitar sometime soon, want a nice fixed bridge that I can change tunings on quickly cus changing tunings on a floyd is just a bitch :(
and I still want to steal my aunts Hofner Committee that she never plays! :( its just plain gorgeous and sounds great (apart from it can get some nasty feedback!)
http://www.xafiers-home.com/art/guitar-pics :)

You would not expect Geoffry Boycott to bat with a brush handle though.
I've had a western acoustic guitar since chritsmas, I mainly just sit and play chords of songs i like but i may get the urge to try really hard at appreggio or whatever its called, cos i'm not very good at that at the moment.
Ousetunes 19-09-2005, 15:22 Just the three which just about covers everything I need for live sets and studio recording.
Epiphone Les Paul - my back-up guitar which, despite its cheapo electrics, is still a wonderful guitar to play. Looks nice too.
Gibson Les Paul Studio - couldn't afford the extra grand to secure a Standard but this one is a beauty. It does exactly what it says on the tin.
Takamine Electric/Acoustic - good for bashing outside a pub or plugged-in.
Next purchase will probably be a Fender Tele. Dream guitar within reach is a Gretsch Country Gent (just the £3.5k to save. Come to Daddy).
You don't need top-notch gear to improve on guitar. However, my first guitar was a Kaye Electric which I bought for £35 in 1983.
It came in great for slicing cheese. Edam, a speciality.

laura_tattoo 19-06-2006, 17:16 i play a vintage metal axxe most of the time, ive been playing for 11 years now and im not bored yet!!!
Don_Kiddick 19-06-2006, 17:38 Got my first guitar, an EKO Ranger 6 at age 15 & taught myself to play on that.
Lovely tone & still have it.
Bought n sold lots of electric 6 string & bass guitars since but still have a tigerstripe sunburst version of This Hondo II (http://www.justguitars.com.au/images/regular/300_high/8107_01.jpg)
Draggletail 19-06-2006, 17:53 I play air guitar and it's an air strat :)
Never did win Buffy and Sass's air guitar competition at the CRB.
** THINKS ** That's 'cos I never had the skill/talent to enter it :hihi:
Banjo Griner 19-06-2006, 18:48 I've got a Yamaha 12-string acoustic, circa 1992 - very nice sound. Also have a Jackson 'Performer' electric axe of death with Flloyd-Rose bridge for mega whammy-bar mayhem. I also play bluegrass banjo, so I've got a Barnes and Mullins 5-string which is my baby, and has been for about 2 years now. I know it's not a guitar, but Slimsid started a 'Who plays the banjo' thread and it was pretty lonely in there.
I've also got a Brazilian stringed drum, called a berimbau - also not a guitar, but a very primitive type of guitar-family instrument, which sounds great.
Some guitar afficionados coming out the woodwork on this thread...
nuf_said 20-06-2006, 01:25 1948 Gibson f hole acoustic - 'after war' cheap model named Cromwell.
Tanglewood Odyssey - round back.
Hondo II solid - v nice.
Spanish round holes - several.
Eko 12 string round hole jumbo.
Gibson Les Paul bad copy made by me age 16.
V old f hole (1930s) fallen apart and in the loft now.
Banjo (but only the 4 string).
Been playing about 16 years.
All I have is a battered and cracked Yamaha dreadnought. It looks a complete mess, but sounds amazing and I love it! :)
Crayfish 20-06-2006, 09:51 Been playing 4 years, taking grade 8 in a couple weeks (eek!)
Best guitar's a Jackson USA KE-2 Blue Ghost Flames, best thing I ever bought (with my first ever installment of student loan :))
Also got a really nice Hofner President ( acoustic steel string archtop from ca.1948 )
A Japanese luthier made classical guitar (Ryoji Matsuoka) from the 70s
A Vantage les paul (ish) copy
A custom painted bass, not sure of maker
A Bouzouki that I'm selling, which can be found here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7423354689&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1
Another classical, Rose Morris Dulcet Classic, bit battered but nice sound - also selling (w/canvas case), £25. Also got a 25 watt electro-acoustic amp made by crafter for sale, £25, and a violin w/bow + case for £75.
I play a bit of piano/keyboards and drums too, and I'm looking for A) a band, and B) guitar students! Just to interject some only slightly shamed advertising in there.
Chris_Sleeps 20-06-2006, 09:55 Been playing 4 years, taking grade 8 in a couple weeks. What exam body are you taking it with? I've done RGT but i found that its a little useless when you get up to grade 8.
BasilRathbon 20-06-2006, 09:56 Virtual Guitarist for me! It's a Cubase plug-in that strums in a variety of styles and stays in time with all your other tracks. No need to mike it up, replace strings or spend hours practicing, just hold down a few block chords on your keyboard and away you go!
Crayfish 20-06-2006, 10:03 It's called 'Rock School' - it's a contemporary music branch of the Trinity College. Quite good, but takes a lot of time to prepare - the syllabus consists of learning three set pieces to play to backing tracks, sight reading, listening (scariest bit, playing back an 8 bar phrase without preparation) and technical work - various scales and arpeggios.
I have to say, the RGT syllabus actually looks pretty easy in comparison from what's on the web, but then that's easy to say as I'm not doing it :)
Chris_Sleeps 20-06-2006, 10:37 I did up to grade 6 rock school at college (i studied popular music). Its good but its not my type of playing at all. RGT is much more technical based, learn numerous scales, modes and arpeggios and then improvise with them. I'd rather do that than play someone elses guitar lines.
When RGT gets up to grade 8 though it gets silly. You have to learn stupid things like all the arpeggios in all their inversions. Did Jimi Hendrix know them? I doubt it. The man just played.
Good luck to you though. :-)
Crayfish 20-06-2006, 12:08 Oh, that sounds quite good actually, I'm sure that sort of thing would be useful... although as you say, there's more to guitar playing than just knowing all the scales and it seems like grades should reflect that.
I quite like the idea of having to learn and perform a piece as with the rock school grades and classical grades e.g. the associated board exams, as being able to play a song from beginning to end does seem like a valuable skill for a guitarist to have!
Cheers, best of luck to you also.
sheff6nic 20-06-2006, 17:14 kramer nightswan anyone? (my other halfs)
My hubby has:
Takamine C- 128 Acoustic
Peavy (EVH) Wolfgang-Beautiful Guitar:love:
Ibanez Rg 570 In Flaked Blue
And play's them through a Marshall TSL 122 Combo
What no bassists???
Well here's one at least, been playing for over 20 years now and during that time have acquired (and occasionally sold) the following in no particular order ....
An old Hondo precision copy (my first ever bass - £40 from s/h shop)
Marlin sidewinder
Fender Precision Deluxe
Washburn (cant remember which model but it had a graphite neck)
Yamaha BB604
And finally me babby - A Tobias classis 5 string
dirtybristow 01-04-2007, 19:00 Jap Fender Tele (E-----) since 1989. I wanted to sell it a few years later when I was skint but the guy I offered it to said it wasn't worth more than £150 so I hung onto it. I rencently got a broadcaster pickup put in it and the tech offered me £600 for it there and then. I didn't part with it becasue I like playing it now.
I've also customised a bunch of parts into a Tele look alike. Mexican neck, MM body, DiMarzio ToneZone at the bridge and Fender original at the neck. Sounds nice.
a 1979 japanese made yamaha accoustic
a burns marquee re-issue
a freshwater scottish made bouzouki
SleepyHead 02-04-2007, 10:41 Been playing for 22 years.
Simon & Patrick cedar-top - nice even-toned 6-string;
standard Fender Telecaster - it's a Tele, not much more to say;
Marlin Sidewinder - very, very beat-up, but sounds great with a touch of distortion;
Yamaha 12-string - awkward devil to play as the action's miles too high - currently farmed out to one of my brothers ;)
Domingo Ortega cedar-top - the guitar I play most - nylon-strung, lacks a bit for a bass, but the trebles are very clear and have a warm (but no over-warm) tone
*** shameless plug ***
I (like some others posting) passed grade ABRSM classical guitar grade 8 about 2 years ago (working on diploma at minute) and I'm also looking for students
*** end of shameless plug ***
SleepyHead 02-04-2007, 10:47 It's called 'Rock School' - it's a contemporary music branch of the Trinity College. The Trinity exams provide a much broader scope than, say, ABRSM who seem to go out of their way to give their students either the dullest or the most technically difficult (and sometimes both) pieces to learn and perform. Perhaps they think this will bring out the best in the best candidates, or perhaps they're just 'avin' a larf.
Other than the nature of the set-pieces (rock, rather than classical) the exam format sounds identical - scales & arps, sight-reading, aural exam (f'nar) & 3 set-pieces.
Do you get to choose your pieces from a list or do you have to supply your own? Oh, and which pieces are you performing?
I did my grade 8 a little while back, and the only advice I'd give you is: Make sure you relax as much as possible before you go into the exam and once you're in there try and stay 'in the moment' 'cause once you start to wonder 'How am I doing?' you're knackered!
Look Below :hihi:
BasilRathbon 02-04-2007, 11:07 Look Below :hihi:
What are you looking at?
Chris_Sleeps 02-04-2007, 11:16 Do you get to choose your pieces from a list or do you have to supply your own?
With Rock School its like the classical exams, you buy a book and learn three of the pieces.
I'd like to play classical guitar properly but i just haven't got the time. I can play a little, but i just use it as a tool to help my fingerstyle guitar really, and to keep me sharp on reading music. Classical guitar is lovely when its done well. :)
To answer the original question anyway, i own:
Epiphone acoustic. Bought for £100 six years ago and it sounds lovely today.
Fender Strat Plus (USA).
Epiphone Dot 335. My favourite guitar.
Squier Telecaster. I bought this for about £40 and stuck it in a weird tuning.
Aria acoustic, nylon strung. I think i got a bit ripped off with this one.
Vox bass guitar, circa 1963.Self taught and played for about 10 years, don't play anymore but still have the guitar.

I have a Westone Concord Bass II (left-handed). It is the only bass I have ever had and ever needed. I got it when I was 15 y.o. (23 years ago!) and it is simply the best value bass ever, with a great sound and great action for fast, dirty playing! It was, and still is, miles better than basses with fancier badges that cost twice as much.
I also have a Tanglewood Odyssey semi-acoustic (right-handed), which was also a bargain buy!
RiffRaff 22-05-2007, 09:02 You must be loaded :hihi:

Fantomas 07-10-2008, 13:53 I've been playing about 20 years (eeeek! I should be much better!).
Main guitar is a Parker Nitefly (as seen in action here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/coupey/2424490513/in/set-72157604621631823/)), also have an Ibanez Iceman, Yamaha RGZ211M and a Squier Silver Series Strat. Also a Tanglewood acoustic for knocking about on and there's a Squier Precision Bass up in the attic that I just use for the odd demo when I need it.
Run my guitars through a Digitech Rp-7 and into a Crate combo that's badly in need of replacement!
Angus Prune 11-10-2008, 18:18 Been playing (badly) since about 1984. My first "proper" guitar was a nondescript student-size classical bought for £20 brand new from Rumbelows on The Moor for my 11th birthday, still got it in the back of a cupboard somewhere...my curent collection:
Encore Dreadnought Acoustic - abysmal guitar, action like a cheesegrater. Used as an ornament.
Tanglewood Seagull Acoustic - still sounds nice afer 15 years.
Encore "Coaster" Strat copy - surprisingly good for a cheapo import, not quite up to gigging but 21 years old and on its last legs now.
Hohner Baron Bass - not at all bad for its price (£50 second hand in 1994) but pickups on their way out.
Fender Standard Strat - wonderful axe. Virtually plays itself and sounds heavenly.
I also used to have an original 1960s Burns Vibra-Artist, a superb vintage instrument until some pillock went and sat on it:o:o:o:o
ive been waisting m y life for 12 yrs currently using
bc rich mocking bird
bc rich jr-v
encore
stagg flying v
stagg 12 string acoustic
swift shark fin
swift acoustic bass
and what i think to be a martin copy as it has no brand name on it
im moving into Sheffield this week so if anyones interested in startin a heavy as f#$k band give me a shout
Garfield1967 21-10-2008, 16:29 Strat Batterrrd, Jagmaster Jap, Shergold, Hohner, Simon Patrick and a Vox bass all with custom made pickups top of the pops.
mystery878 23-10-2008, 11:37 Been playing for 7 years. I've got:
Peavey Raptor with Bare Knuckle pickups (turd is somewhat polished)
Line 6 Variax 300
Heavily modified Epiphone Valve Junior combo.
Crafter FX550EQ electro-acoustic.
For recording/headphone practice I've got:
Behringer V-amp 2 which IMO is a very under-rated bit of kit.
Line 6 Toneport UX1 with all the Gearbox amp models and effects (I'll be getting the free Pod Farm upgrade soon)
Amplitube 2
Guitar Rig 3
Revalver 3
Been playin' on and off for absolutely years ( about 30 actually), ****....has it really been that long? If only I'd stuck at it I should have been brilliant by now. There's a lesson to be learned there somewhere me thinks.
Anyway just the 2 guitars at the mo:-
Yamaha APX1 Special, electro-acoustic.
1980 Fender "The Strat" Stratocaster in candy apple red, very nice but extremely solid and bloody heavy.
Marshall JCM 900 - 2 x 12" 50W valve combo
Boss ME-10 Multi-Effects
I really ought to do something with them.

Leon_Clark 03-11-2009, 21:54 early 90's les paul standard through a marshall jtm 60 with a 2x12 extension cabinet. Also have a japanese squire strat from 80's and a 1996 cali start and also a limited run washburn evil twin blue quilt one of only fifty made (for sale if you ask me nicly)
Leon_Clark 13-11-2009, 18:46 And a peavey telecaster copy that I use for guitar teaching. Also have on loan a 2007 Gibson les-paul standard. I still prefer my early 90's one...the feel and sound of new Gibsons are not a patch on the old ones :-( why they have to make them chambered i dont know but it feels like a copy and not a guitar that should cost £1500
Alan Curtis 13-11-2009, 18:50 I've got an old Hayman from the 70's. great action and interesting body.

Rich Tone 24-11-2009, 00:53 I use a Tokai LS90Q which i've battered and mistreated over the last couple of years. It's my main guitar and is built brilliantly.
I also have a Gibson Custom Shop Flying V with Vibrola - Wishbone Ash fan, so i have to be forgiven that one.
I've still got my Yamaha Pacifica 112 which i bought back when i was 14. Still plays great. And i also have a Yamaha CPX8SY Compass series acoustic.
Not got a steady amp at the moment but have been trashing an old Laney VC30-212 for a while now.
I'm hoping to get me hands on a nice Egnator Rebel 20 soon...........one day she will be mine!!!
