Shiesh 18-09-2005, 21:15 Go into the kitchen and drink at least 8 oz of water, cold is better. After consuming the water, take 1 tablespoon of dry baking soda and mix with 1/2 cup water. Drink the entire mixture (additional water may be needed to remove rough feeling on tongue). This will not keep heartburn away forever but it will drive it away in approximately 3-5 minutes and should keep it away for 24 hours or more before an additional dose is necessary. Another quick and simple idea is to drop 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar onto a single slice of white bread. Eat the bread immediately. This may leave a discomforting taste in your mouth for some time, but it should keep heartburn away for at least 48 hours. bellis 18-09-2005, 21:17 Originally posted by Lestat Whats up? . . abit difficult to understand:confused: Here, I'll say it a tad s l o w e r for you. If you keep getting it you may have a hiatus hernia - this is a weakness in the sphincter muscle at the top of your stomach and as you age it 'leaks' a little and lets stomach acids out in to your oesophagus. I don't believe that there's a cure for it - I've just had to take a little more care with what I eat! Good luck with it! Joe Cheers Joe, I think I know what you mean, I once saw a programme about it - and a woman who had really bad heartburn ended up having an operation where they sewed up the leaky bit in her belly! ( thats my medical anallergy by the way ). It sometimes feels quite horrible and never really goes away. Smoking used to set it off alot, but mainly dry foods like bread and potato seem to trigger it now. Heart burn is all about acid on the stomach and occassionally going up the old pipe, I think scientists found that milk can agrovate your stomach even more, regardless of the fact most of the older generation swear by it :loopy: medusa 18-09-2005, 21:30 A bit of bicarb or baking soda in water should do the trick (and yes, it really will work, as will chalk- they're both alkaline and will neautralise acid). The Gaviscon that you take doesn't neutralise the acid, but contains an ingredient that forms a liquid 'raft' across the top of your stomach contents to prevent the acid from being regurgitated and giving you heartburn. I was a medical rep for 7 years and sold antacids for a living- I could bore you for hours about the whole topic. BTW don't use the bicarb as a routine treatment- it's very high in sodium (even higher than Gaviscon) which raises your blood pressure. OK occasionally, bad plan long term. And don't put off eating- this will just make the acid worse. Lestat 18-09-2005, 21:35 Wow! cheers medusa! I'll give the old baking soda a try tonight and see what happens. Just out of curiosity . . . can you take this before a night out to stop the alcohol from coming back up!? Shiesh 18-09-2005, 21:39 Originally posted by Lestat Wow! cheers medusa! The Gaviscon should have more of a chance of doing that- the alginate raft is specifically intended to stop acid reflux, so being sick should be harder after you've taken it. Or how's about this for an original suggestion- don't drink enough to be sick! If you slow down consumption and eat starchy food during it all your stomach lining should be a happier bunny. Lestat 18-09-2005, 21:42 :P Sheish! . . . I was waiting for other replies with different methods, the baking soda one seems to be the most popular and it was medusa who mentioned it last so I just thanked him/her thats all ( digs hole even deeper ). Sheish - you rightly pointed out that baking soda works FIRST therefore Thank you so much  I will duely try YOUR method and report back after. :P ;) Abdul 18-09-2005, 21:42 Been to the the Fir Vale curry houses have we :D I sympathise with you greatly  I first experienced nuclear heartburn for the first time many years ago - there was such a painful burning sensation in my chest, I thought I was having heart problems :o I went to see my doctor several days later; too much spicy meat he said  Gaviscon worked a treat; mmm... that lovely aniseed flavour  Lestat 18-09-2005, 21:45 Originally posted by Abdul Been to the the Fir Vale curry houses have we :D Abdul, trust me - the Fir Vale curry houses are great! If you eat in them enough you soon grow immune to them! LOL:P It's when you go outa Fir Vale and taste the rancid stuff they call: 'cooked'. dynamicdebz 18-09-2005, 21:54 If you suffer from heartburn regularly you should get your dr to check it out. 50% of the population suffer from a condition called Helicobacter Pylori. They contract it in childhood & it can cause regular heartburn symptoms later on. You need a camera down your throat to diagnose but it is very simple to treat with 2 or 3 courses of antibiotics. Left untreated it can cause more sinister problems later on. It probably isn't this but it is such a common problem best to get it checked out. I had this & it caused a stomach ulcer, but was soon cured. Lestat 18-09-2005, 21:58 Thanks debz, I'll see how I go with the soda and if it carries on will go to the doc's. Don't want no Helicopter Pillory in my guts!:gag: lizzmobile 18-09-2005, 22:04 OK, in my experience, you wanna avoid all that over the counter stuff, and yes milk takes the discomfort away briefly then ups the acid later so it comes back. I had INDUSTRIAL heartburn during both my pregnancies so bad I couldn't even drink water and ginger worked for me. You can buy ginger cordial (the brown not the pink ginger), or infuse some slippery elm bark (Wicker Herbal) with soya milk works quite well and the best of all was fresh (not tinned) pineapple. We are talking radical. I sympathise 110%. But yup, cut down on acid foods, anything fried, oily, citrus, potatoes are acidic too, and alcohol too I'm afraid. medusa 18-09-2005, 22:28 Just in case the thought of the endoscopy camera frightens anybody, I thought I'd let you know that you now only need an endoscopy to confirm the presence and location of an ulcer or hiatus hernia. The tests for Helicobacter pylori can now be done with a throat swab or by breathing onto test paper. Much less yukky. Treatment is an eradication course of 2 antibiotics together for 2 weeks, with a proton pump inhibitor like omeprazole to reduce the acid production. Even people with confirmed ulcers can now be cured with this treatment- no lifetime avoiding certain foods like it used to entail. So it may be in your interests to see your GP and discuss longer term treatment (even if that means taking a pill twice a day and avoiding the heartburn altogether I think that could be a positive over smelling of aniseed the whole time!) BTW I'm a she. JFKvsNixon 18-09-2005, 23:27 Originally posted by Jimbob1989 I'm not sure if milk helps. Heart burn is all about acid on the stomach and occassionally going up the old pipe, I think scientists found that milk can agrovate your stomach even more, regardless of the fact most of the older generation swear by it :loopy: Milk can cause temporary relief, but it confuses the stomach into thinking that food is on the way. This then stimulates the stomach into producing its digestive acids which causes more heart burn. There are many reasens for heart burn from life style to hiatus hernias. Reflux (when the stomach acids track back up the oesophegus) over a longish period of time can be serious as it can cause some damage to the oesophogus. I apologise for the spelling errors, it is after midnight kittykat 18-09-2005, 23:55 When i get heartburn or reflux i always lay on my left side and it seems a bit better. I think its probably because when you lie on your right side the opening of the stomach where the oesophagus meets is fully opened so the acid can get back up. Please bear in mind left and right could be the other way round with me as i dont have the mental capacity to remember which is which. MuteWitness 19-09-2005, 10:15 if any of you guy's know any home-made remedies I could try?? understand what your eating and what acid is needed to digest you could try food combining for a week see if it stops? sugarnspice 19-09-2005, 10:18 Originally posted by Jimbob1989 I'm not sure if milk helps. Thanks for the advice! Deavon 19-09-2005, 11:01 Try Zantac 75 if you keep getting heartburn. This is the good stuff! Rather than changing the PH in your stomach like rennie and baking soda (no offence to the baking soda posse), it actually stops your stomach from producing excess acid in the first place. It's very effective but very expensive. missb 19-09-2005, 16:18 I too suffer from heartburn but know what causes it. If I eat late at night and sleep within two hours then I'm up in the night and I actually vomit it's that bad. I prevent this now by sleeping with an extra pillow when I have had a late supper. Alternatively I have some peppermint indigestion tablets at the side of the bed. If the symptons persist then I suggest you see a doctor. Think i will try them at that price. Used to get really bad heartburn when i was in my teens, just started getting it again recently, had it that bad last sunday i thought i was having a heart attack!! nothing shifted it!! I think it's strong coffee that cause mine. medusa 20-09-2005, 00:18 There are many drugs which work by a similar mode of action to ranitidine (Zantac), that is to say they suppress the over pruduction of stomach acids by one means or another. I am firmly of the opinion that unless you know why you are getting the reflux/heartburn symptoms (pregnancy, food intolerance etc) you should not ignore the symptoms and if they occur regularly should get checked out by your GP to see if there's anything that can be done to stop the attacks happening. There are far more drugs available on prescription than over the counter, and not all suit everybody. Prescription tablets are also stronger than over the counter pills, so £6.50 for something that actually takes away the problem isn't bad. The original thread question was what could be taken when pharmacies aren't available and so little of this would have helped at the time- just don't take bicarb too oftenor your blood pressure could suffer. BTW A GP friend of mine used to laugh at patients who came in worrying that they were having a heart attack when they had heartburn, right up until the night he checked himself in to the Coronary Care Unit with 'cardiac pain'. Oh how we laughed! wendygs 06-01-2006, 05:43 Originally posted by lizzmobile OK, in my experience, you wanna avoid all that over the counter stuff, and yes milk takes the discomfort away briefly then ups the acid later so it comes back. I started with heartburn and indigestion severly 3 years ago, eventually went to my doctor who after trying a few tablets sent me to the hospital, over a year and a half I had to have 3 endoscopies as because of the acid I had polyps in my stomach which I was told had been because at some point I had ulcers. The tablets had helped and I am now on 2 Ranitidine tablets a day. Heartburn and terrible indigestion has gone but I have to be very careful what I eat. LellyBee 06-01-2006, 07:09 Ranitidine rules  When my mum had surgery the anaesthetist asked if she suffered from heartburn as the effects of anaesthesia could aggravate this when she "came" round, so he gave her ranitidine tablets which she absolutely swore by. We now all buy Boots own branded ranitidine tablets and they're a god send  Roll on all inclusive hols, no more stopping our eating and drinking early 'cos of heartburn, we all take plenty of "ratty" tabs with us :D dynamicdebz 06-01-2006, 22:19 I had helicobacter pylori, when treated i still had the symptoms, was told i also had an ulcer, when this went i still had the symptoms, was then told i also had a slight hiatus hernia. On top of this i also have reflux because i have a condition that weakens my esophogus, so i have had some terrible problems, sickness, bloating pain & much more. I take a 40mg omeprazole everyday (prescribed) & it has changed my life, I can now drink alcohol & have curries, however i have trouble eating foods that are hard to digest like eggs, bananas & cucumber, i guess this is because i don't have the stomach acid needed to digest these. The reason heartburn can cause problems when under anesthetic is because your muscles are so relaxed acid can come up & flood your lungs. |
