View Full Version : HELP! Data needs taking off Broken Hard Drive
Can anyone help us or can anyone reccommend someone who can recover Data from our old Hard Drive.
We had it replaced by Del because of the disc crashing and they have left us our old Hard Drive so we can try to recover all our info but we only have a couple of days before we have to send it back.
We are not Computer Buffs at all so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Folks :help:
what is wrong with the harddrive that has the info on?
if it is nothing too bad it is very easy to just plug this HDD in and transfer everything from it onto your new one/onto CDs/DVDs :)
Not sure what went wrong - there were some missing files on start up. We called Del who did a System Check then told us they would come and replace the Hard Drive which they did. Unfortunately needless to say we have lost all our work and didn't have copies done Yes I know that was stupid! :loopy:
We still have the orginal Hard Drive to try and recover the work but have to send it back to them pretty soon.
Showing our complete ignorance now - What is a HDD!!!
Hi,
Did the PC actually recognise the drive when you tried to start it up? Was the drive making any strange clicking or grinding noises? Can you describe the symptoms of the fault? Without more information it isn't possible to say if the data is recoverable or not.
HDD=Hard Disk Drive, aka hard drive.
If there are only files missing off the drive then there may not be anything wrong with it. I would try putting it in the PC as a slave drive and see what does happen, it could well be perfectly readable.
HDD stands for hard disk drive
HDD is hard disk drive :)
where abouts are you? if you live anywhere near me i could come and have a look at it for you???
dont have a car so wadsley bridge/hillsborough area kinda covers it LOL
It started up normally for a few seconds then the error page came up. We sent it to a PC Doc to see if he could retrieve the info and fix it but he coudn't and suggested we contacted Del.
It did make a few noises.
We have a new hard drive now so the computer is ok but like I have mentioned we need the data off the old Hard Drive.
We live at Chapeltown but the Vodkas have started flowing so we are unable to fetch you tonight G18241 but thanks for the offer.
no worries :) im not at home until tuesday/wednesday after tonight though so sorry :(
im sure someone will help, tis very simple to do :)
If you sent it away to someone to recover and they failed then I doubt there's anything you can do then.
If the recovery isn't just a straight forward task then be prepared to spend some serious money getting the data off. Is it important stuff on there?
We could live without the stuff but it's photos of before and after shots of Building work we have done that is the main thing we want to recover so customers can see the work we have done and we can't exactly go and knock it all down again!!!
It's just a pain as I will also have to re-do the accounts files. It's a hard lesson learnt we will make sure we have copies from now on.
It really depends on how knackered it is. If it spins up and the controller works and your dada is still on it then you should be able to recover some of it. Easiest option is for you to unplug your cd / dvd drive and connect your old drive to the cable and power connector.
Boot your computer normally and open windows explorer, you should see drive C and also drive D. Drive D is your old hard drive. drag the files you want to recover to a new directory on drive C.
One other thing, if the drive works briefly put fails quickly then get a bag of frozen peas, wrap it in a tea towl and stick the drive on top. It might give you a bit more time to work with.
Let us know how you get on.
neeeeeeeeeek 18-09-2005, 19:04 That reply from Gouch is actually me, PM me if you need any more info. Gouch was still logged in and I had not noticed!
Thanks Neeeeeeeeeek - we will give it a go.
Thanks to all of you for your help and advice I will let you know what happens.
I think I need to do a Basic Computer course so I can do more than switch it on and type!!!
TheBlueDragon 18-09-2005, 19:28 I will pop round tomorrow. I will put the hard drive in my computer and see what I can save for you.
