Just been chatting to one of my friends who saw Corrina (one of the Dempseys) door staff in Xs the other night and she said that Dempseys is closing down because they can't compete with Fuel.

Apparently the past few weeks the place has been deserted.

If this is true, it is a little bit sad had lots of good night outs in there.

Maybe if they'd paid more attention to what their customers were saying before now, rather than having the attitude that they 'had us over a barrell' they would be in a better position.

I've had some laughs there, but I won't miss it.

Sheffield will only ever have one club, there arn't the numbers to support two.

I know people said that people will travel to Sheffield but TBH if you lived nearer to Leeds or Manchester would you bother to come to Sheffield ?

Yes, Dumpsys has us "over a barrel", but they were the only club, they called the shots, as did Planet when it was open. When you have no competition you can do what you want.

I agree with you Kristian they thought they had us over a barrell, like nowhere else to go, but thats not the case now is it.

I see Nick2 is as cheerful and positive as ever, LOL :P

There's still Xes, and if we really do find ourselves limited to one Gay club in the city centre, I'm glad it's one that's going about things properly.

I'm not being deliberately negative, it's just that in the last 20 years I've seen a few clubs/pubs/bars come and go in Sheffield and the pattern is always the same.

I'll be the first person to put my hand up and say Dempseys is a flea pit (I wouldn't put my hand up upstairs though incase it stuck to the ceiling) but once it's gone and Xs has gone (which it will I think) where is your choice of places to go ?

Sheffield is realy weird in that it's gay scene seems to be limited to one pub and one club at any one time. As soon as something new opens everyone flocks there and the previous places, starved of customers shut down (it doesn't take long to go under when you rely on weekend customers mainly), and the whole cycle starts again.

Manchester (and Leeds to a lesser extent) have enough people out drinking to keep the "old" places going until the initial excitement about a new bar has worn off so they stay open and are still there waiting for you once you're bored with the new place.

Sheffield has had two gay clubs (Dumpseys & Xs) for years now, so that proves your theory is wrong and for a start Xs caters for the post 2am crowd, I doubt its losing any of its custom to Fuel.

Xs only survived as an alternative to Dempseys I believe.

There was a time when the people responsible for The Planet where in control of the gay scene in Sheffield. As their control spread throughout the scene, they got greedier and greedier. Prices went up and things got messy. They eventually managed to put the last nail in the Cossacks coffin. (Not sure if that was a good or bad thing)

By the time Dempseys hit town, many people had had enough. As a result, Dempseys took off, even after many attempts by the The Planet people to get the place shut down. Obviously they failed and the The Planet boys were never to be seen again.

Along comes Fuel, at a time when people are starting to get fed up with Dempseys and its ever increasing door tax, general lack of imagination and grubbiness.

The pattern is, new boy hits town all smiles and eager to please. He gets a lot of attention, it goes to his head. He gets vain, lazy and greedy, which starts to look ugly. When the next pretty boy hits town, everyone runs screaming.

I want Fuel to do well. It looks like a winner now. I hope things don’t get ugly.

I agree wholeheartedly.

I see no reason for Fuel to fail in the way it's predecessors have though. It has been very successful in Hull, and after chatting with Danny, it's clear the management have some excellent ideas, and are not content to rest on their laurels.

I guess only time will tell, but I have a good feeling about our new kids on the block! :)

Dempseys makes me laugh. It is on the doorstep of on eof the biggest employers in Sheffield and yet there is not way many civil servents will go into the dump (apart from out of towners conned into it:D )

Nick2 - Well Xes was never a pub it has always been a club and stayed open until 4am, so how you class this as a pub is beyond me, it does have its regulars but when I went down late on Friday I am afraid it has suffered from Fuel, it was empty, hopefully their "themed nights" will keep it going, because the last thing we want (and even Nick2 has to agree here) is for all the gay pubs/clubs to close down and find Fuel isnt here to stay. But I agree with Kristian new kid on the block looks good.

I have just been to the shop downstairs to get some toilet roll and saw a Dempsey flyer, yes, I am more shocked that you, they are having themed nights.

last ditch effort guys from them because "a bird" told me if taking are not back to normal in 2 weeks its closing. I know Dempseys survived the Planet days but Fuel is a bit different, and the pub that is benefiting from Fuel is The Roebuck.

Yes I agree with you there, I laffed at this, Pie&Peas was done in the 70`s, and who is going to pay £5.00 for pie and peas anyway.

They can do what they like with Dempseys but for the love of god don't do anything with Climax. :nono:

dempseys would be stupid to close now when students are coming back

on friday i went to climax with some friends (it was quite funny cause the guy on the door said 'thankyou for supporting climax' so you felt the effect of fuel already!) but surprisingly considering fuel had the honeyz and bb bloke djing, climaz was actually very busy!

Spoke to my friends who chose fuel and they said it got busy by about 10, and this is before students are back properly!!

When the students get back and people actually start realising they have a bit of choice (with the novelty of a new club wearing off and mentality settling a little) dempseys should realise that it has an excellent opportunity to do itself up and become the ONLY PRE-BAR for any of the clubs, especially since its open late.

Dempseys !!!! don't pack it in, stick you're money in your pocket and slap some face on you and you'll pull in the punters no problem. get involved with all three clubs, offering to sell advanced tickets from your venue (don't isolate yourself and try and compete cause you can't) and really push yourself as part of the scene with the venues supporting each other, act as a pre-bar and give the punters some choice. They can always go to more than one bar/club per night!!

Don't just throw your toys out the pram and call it quits because you're not going to have the lions share anymore, there's no reason why you can't make money.

Its just a case of being foward minded, competition like this should help the centre get better and with more choice - not just substitute one place for the next

p.s. could anyone actually imagine sheffield ever getting to the stage where you'd do a gay/bi/tran venue pub crawl? :D

However, The Earl is listed as a nightclub too, which I think is just a pub that stays open late, so perhaps XS is too and my definition of "club" is wrong.

we at fuel fully appreciate all of your points on this thread and we understand why you would be concerned about a single venue 'monopolising' the gay scene.

we are very different to the venues that have been here before but only time will prove it!
we are here to stay, we do support the community, we do have morals and we do listen to what people want / need and respond those needs as fast and as fairly as possible.

we have sent letters and made loads of phone calls trying to forge relationships with all of the other gay places in sheffield, with the aim of working together to make the scene better and attract more people to the city.
the only people who have got back to us is xces, who we are now working with on several levels.
we wanted to work together with climax and dempseys to avoid clashing and to improve the scene overall etc but we have had no response to any of our communications.
in fact we seem to have fallen victim to bitching and rumours instead.

there is room for everyone in sheffield! we just need to pull together and attract people to the city for everyone to benefit.
this is the 4th biggest city in the country for goodness sake, not some backwater!

however, if people can't figure that out and make the changes and improvements to ensure their own success, please don't hold us responsible!

we have worked with all of the gay venues and groups in hull (except 1 straight club trying to cash in) and that has benefited the city no end. we are committed to doing the same here.
However, if we do end up as the only gay club here for any period of time, we will not take advantage of it!
we haven't in Hull for over two years and we won't here.
we have the vision to realise that we need to support the gay community before you will support us! not the other way around.
we also know what it is like to be stuck in a city with a crap club that you have to go to because it's the only place that is gay.
even though they put no effort in and charge the earth! it takes the p*ss and we won't do it!

again, only time will prove it.

if it did close down and someone took it over they could turn it into an absolute goldmine. There are so many people working in Moorfoot and it would be very well used

Have spoken to people at Dempseys and there are no plans for it to close down. Obviously attendance has dropped somewhat with the arrival of a new club but they haven't thrown the towel in yet.

I have been a few times now to Fuel and had a fab night - its a much needed welcome addition to the scene but I would hate to see it at Dempseys expense. Fuel will always be the preferred choice for a night of clubbing - but Dempseys is currently the only fulltime (day and night) gay venue in Sheffield.

It is the only gay bar I can go to for a quick pint after work, my sunday dinner which I will be tucking into tomorrow or if I want a quiet night rather than a full on clubbing night. I even had my dinner in Dempseys this year on Christmas day. I don't know much about the other theme nights but I've been in for my curry and I can recommend it.

As far as I can see a pub and a club should work great together not be in competition.

I have previously ran two nights in Sheffield of which Dempseys was very supportive on both occassions.

I'm not familiar with the 'scene' so cannot really make an educated comment here, however what Dannyfuel and agentlesbos says does make sense to me. One club does not constitute a scene, there must be enough of a market for all of the current venues providing they each do something a little different.

I think its rather sad that people can be so fickle, do people not realise if they dont support Dempseys then yes it will close, well some may say good, however have they actually thought about this?

If Dempseys closes people will inevitably get bored with Fuel, perhaps some foresight would be appropriate! Why not support Dempseys and go for a drink before Fuel, in that way we as customers keep both business's on their toes and we get a better gay scene as a whole rather than a limited options of where to go.

Yes Dempseys leaves a lot to be desired, however I have had some excellent nights there and I personally would like to have choice and options rather than be ghettoised into one venue.

i have pondered giving a reply to this thread for a while now.

gary and simon who own xes have had a great oppertunity over the last few years to develop what could have been a great clubbut instead have not really done much to make xes the venue it could have been

dempseys to me has always been a kids club it has never in my view reached the potential that it could have,

in my mind both these supposed clubs have not given much thought to what the average gay person wants when they go out for the night.

when Fuel came to sheffield you could hear the gay comunity sigh with relief at the possibility of going to a real venue,

i have tried Fuel on several different nights and up to now i must say i have not come away dissapointed, it is with out a doubt the best gay club that sheffield has had for many years,

and long may it continue, im sure if dempseys and xes do close that the owners of Fuel would look at expanding with a pre club bar and lets hope they also look into developing a second club at what i believe was called europa.

you are doing a great job you guys at Fuel keep it up

There is another Gay Night in Hull.

The nightclub is called 'Pozition'(we hire) and we run a night called 'Vitesse' their each Friday. The night 'Vitesse' is owned by a transvestite(my brother) and a gay guy(me) and has been running 6 months this Friday. The Gay Scene has become more and more receptive to our night over time and even against very stiff competition we have continued to build progressively. Most of all we have fun and that is what the gay scene should be about!

I am not gay, but I visited dempseys with two people who were gay.
I had a nice evening and the people in there were very friendly. It is a shame if it closes as there is not enough places for gay people to meet up in safety.

Whatever you may say about Dempseys, i have to say it is pretty cool. As far as i am concerned it is the best all-round gay club in sheff. For all u people who call it Dumpseys for gods sake, grow up! Where did u go in sheffield b4 fuel? Everyone used to pack into dempseys and now everyone is slagging it off just because a new club has come along. Dont get me wrong, fuel is fab and i wish them well but guys... show a little respect for the club that u ALL used to go to b4. B4 Fuel, D's was the number 1 club in sheffield and everyone went there, and now that it has had a make-over upstairs, it just got better! if u all took the time to go there once in a while u wud see that. I actually agree. I've heard that they have redone the upstairs and apparently it's a really good night. I agree with what you were saying about people slating it now another place has opened, it was once the only place to go and gave gay people a place to meet up. I have to say though i am one of those people that haven't been since Fuel opened will i will definetly return soon to check it out.

Btw are they open til 6 now as they applied for planning permission a while back?

I go to xes too, usually after Fuel. I think now with Demseys getting permission to open until 6 they might steal some of the xes customers and will compete with them rather than Fuel.

yes dempseys has applied 4 a later opening time but as yet have not heard anything. and so what if the downstairs isnt as nice as it cud be does it really matter that its not perfect? after all, straight people go there too and you know, the upstairs is proper camp anyway. U have to realise, football fans walk past the downstiars all the time and if any trouble kicks off because its too outrageously camp downstairs what will happen then? u shudnt juge a place on the look off it, ok, looks mean soimething but not everythuing. The MORE Gay venues, and 'Gay Nights' at mainstream Venues there are, the BETTER it is for all; not just the LGBT Community, but for a more integrated scene as a whole.

For those who havent been to Dempseys for a while, I must say that I was knocked back with a feather when they unveiled the new-look upstairs for the first time -It is FABULOUS! a huge bar, stylish wall decor, new floor, and of course the cage!

Now, all that is needed is, yes, to do something about the downstairs; Oh, and the staircase as well; also the Cocktail Bar could do with a new look to match the main upstairs room.

Still, with the downstairs, I like the large telly they now have for the Karaoke, and the better chairs they got about a year ago, but the rest of the furniture downstairs looks grim. The food, though, both in range, and in availability (You can order food until VERY late) is fantastic, and that is one of the main selling points of Dempseys during the daytime!

Perhaps the most immediate priority would be to do something about the very dated signs outside and the dirty grey shutters which are closed early in the evening for security; How about painting them with Rainbow colours of something?

Yes you have valid points here, at least Climax, Fuel and Xes have websites and you can work out what is happening, there is nothing for Dempseys, I have tried contacting them several times about the above questions and still awaiting a reply, maybe Happysherpa is right and they are "set in their ways". I have to agree. Knowing some of the bar staff, they're quite keen to do this stuff but the owners don't like spending the money.
Personally, if I'd spent some money doing the place up, I'd spend the little extra to get it marketed properly.

Dempseys have done a little work on their club..and its looking pretty trendy upstairs.. now they need to promote the club, get a website and a few leaflets. I think maybe the staff that work there are tooo old and stuck in the old days lol

Best suggestion, go in one weekend with a digital camera.

Colin and Kieran are the joint owners and managers, Colin being the licence holder.
Kieran, Ian, Dawn and Paul all do DJ slots upstairs.

Tues - Quiz night
Wed - Karoake with Ian as DJ
Thur - Stripper
Sun - Karoake with rat as DJ

Mon, Fri and sat are Disco/Dance nights with lots of requests to be played.

Have to say the last time I went to Dempseys was the first time in quite a while and I was quite impressed with what they have done and I think if they play it right they can be a good alternative to Fuel. Unlike Fuel dempseys has the downstairs area in which music isnt played at full blast and so people can actually talk to each other. They should try and play that to its full advantage and also renovate the downstairs area.

Umm they do have a website, but it's out of date.
They've obtained a late closing licence til VERY late, so can effectively close when they want, I think. I'd need to check that one.

Well I was a bit bored of drinking in The Monk last night and everyone else who was out from work seemed to want to stay there, so I went down to .... Dempseys ..... haven`t been down there at all this year, and I liked upstairs, shame they cannot spend any money downstairs, there was quite a few people in as well..

I got the closing times : Sunday --> Thursday 3am, Friday and Saturday 4am.

I am sure I will be down there more often. :thumbsup: drinks are much cheapeer than Fuel, only costing £2.40 a pint :)

Well I went to Dempsey's with Kristian and Spider40Peter1 on Saturday night and to be honest I'd forgotten how crap it was. BUT it was half the price of fuEL to get in, the drinks were cheaper, the campness levels were high and we had a good laugh! It still has its problems (mainly with the clientele) but the place is looking better. :) :thumbsup:

Was surprised how busy it was to be honest - obviously the novelty value of fuEL has worn off. All went well until SpiderPete treated everyone to a pole dance in the new cage...

I got there early, stayed till around 11pm.

Because of financial constraints (i. e. no job at present), I CANNOT come down on a regular basis to LGBT venues anymore to do Drag UNLESS I AM PAID FOR IT. I will be at Climax on 16th June (I believe they will have a Karaoke specially for that night) but that will all for a while, folks....

Doing Drag is EXPENSIVE, so unfortunately at the present, it is: No pay? No Way!!!

I thought dempseys was great. I started to go to fuel when it opened but stopped like a few people when they were asked for I.D to people over 25. One night the bouncer let me after i showed my i.d the next day he didn't. He said he knew who i was but i needed my I.D on me.

Vip @ Takapuna was ace but unfortunatley never did take off.

For whatever reason people chose to goto dempseys instead maybe the backward gay scene of sheffield doesn't want anywhere that's classy and sophisticated.

I guess not, I did suggest they get some glitterballs and mirrored urinals but they wern't going for it :(

IMO problem with Takapuna was it was on the wrong night, yes it was a bit pricey but they did have special offers on.

Well.......... it was a eventfull night, some I cannot mention on a family forum but it was a "different" night, must say after winning at Mah Jong in the Dev Cat :clap: I popped down to Dempseys as I have found my membership card in the kitchen and now costs nowt to get in before 10pm, I saw some friends I had not seen for ages, I mean months, and they mentioned a stripper was on.

Then I went upstairs, and someone knew me, I didn`t have the foggiest idea who he was, I was a bit drunk (no surprise there), and the rest I shall save for PM land, as its a family forum.

If you haven`t been down on a Thursday night, get down, its a brill night......and as usual I behaved myself :thumbsup: and left about 3am.......... and just woke up, I might even pop down tonight. :hihi: :hihi:

Just been chatting to one of my friends who saw Corrina (one of the Dempseys) door staff in Xs the other night and she said that Dempseys is closing down because they can't compete with Fuel.

We were all sat downstairs from about 11.15pm until abouit midnight, and then went upstairs, so the chances are you may have seen us. We were sat next to the big tv screen :thumbsup:

I was in from about 10.30 until 1am(ish), mainly downstairs at that....spent a fair time talking to martin at the bar.

ooh, deja vu moment (please do excuse moi... ) i have just remembered some wretched thing that physically has definately without a shadow of doubt matured, and it could be argued it has actually unrealistically severely over-matured in physical terms!!! way beyond anybody's wildest dreams! however in all terms other than physical, the specimin in question has in fact become so immature, i doubt it could ever ever be classified.. this freak example of all the lowest of the low must be shredded in a cross cut shredder, and then decompressed, into a vile pink shade recycled toilet paper.. with no antibac qualities, and too cheap and nasty to even come in a package and therefore only is available in lets say dumpseys loo, most nights, slumped on the floor in a heap, trying to attach itself to something much younger, fresher than its-self, only to be seen clearly by everyone else at the end of the night clinging to this innocent much younger and fresher thing and then in just the nick of time.... the super hero thing, known only to appear in the most severe cases of lecherous, filthy beastiality, swooped down from very high and moral place in the night sky, covering the filthy from dumpseys loo in over ripened manure, and bagging it up in some kind of plastic casing, before dumping it gracefully in the river humber. never to be seen again.

well, I popped down there before the Mah Jong meet for a couple, and this new guy was there and this other guy came over, and we all had a good chat and stuff.

I left about midnight-ish and had a fab time.

Nice to see a forum person there as well, had a good chat, although I was a bit tipsy when I came over to you. :thumbsup:

I really need to give Dempseys a revisit too, not been since Fuel opened last year, heard lots of people say the numbers have picked up alot recently.

Always preferred the music in Dempseys to Fuel's main room which is just so boring!!

I went down town after work on sunday.

First went to the bedroom and got 2nd place in the karaoke competition.

For the first time in years, I fancied going to a club but couldnt think of one that may be open so just wandered around and spotted kingdom - went in and stayed about 15 minutes.

What a hole !

Went looking for somewhere else and wandered into dempseys.

They had just finished the karaoke - downer :(

Ended up upstairs where for the first time in about 15 years I WAS DANCING :o

So, if you spotted a slightly inebriated person attempting to dance upstairs on sunday night - that was me.

Must also say : the bar staff in Dempseys are much more friendlier, unlike Fuel who are just stuck up arrogant young skinny people, who just dont have the time or day for you, give me someone who is "normal" day to day guy to serve me and they get my money....... sorry if it sounds a bit harsh but its true IMO.

Monday in Fuel was a fine example of this.

Personally I think what you said was very unfair! Yes the bar staff in Dempseys are friendly and most of them are always chatty with a smile on their face. However to say the staff at Fuel are stuck up and arrogant is a dumb generalisation.

They may be young and skinny but what's wrong with a bit of eye candy? In general though you can't say they are all arrogant or don't have 'the time of day' for you as I think most of them work hard in their role and try to encourage a positive atmosphere.

If there are particular incidents/bar members you find unfriendly I suggest you notify Stewie or Danny so they can solve the issue.

I think they are well aware of my positive and negative feedback, shame more don`t do it.
