First of all I LIKE Dempseys, but I do have the right to question things from time to time. I am not being a drama queen but the Saturday in question was very strange and yes some of the men were with women and were making it clear they were with women.

I went to Dempseys on Easter Sunday and had a fantastic night, a totally different atmosphere. So what ! just because its a gay bar, does that mean that straight people and their partners cant go in

That isn't what I am saying, it,s just that on THAT night the atmosphere was strange, tense. One gay guy was told to f.. off gay **** in the loos bya guy and lots of young lads were in and out of the loos like a rat in a hole, classic sign of drug use.

I accept that i am old fashioned in my "gay" ways and will take a lot of stick on this forum but I don't understand why straight lads or straight couples want to go to a gay club on a Saturday night when there are hundreds of straight bars in Sheffield. It,s not just me, I spoke to loads of people who also said it was "too" straight and "weird" THAT Saturday night. But I did have a great time last Sunday.

OK - time for me to chuck my two penneth in. Firstly, the last few points about the straight atmosphere are correct. Far too many queens have been bringing in their straight girl friends, making them members, letting the girl friends bring in their boyfriends, again membership, then they split and the boyfriend brings in his straight mates etc - and it goes on. We are currently on lock out at Dempseys in an attempt to "gay-en" the place up again. On Saturday about 40 straights were turned away and the atmosphere was great, until a queen demanded that his family be allowed in. Albeit, the family started fighting and Colin got battered. So now, no guests are being allowed in, only members - simple as that. We have operated this since Saturday night and the place hasn't been affected by trade - it now means that everyone feels more comfortable and stays longer. Sadly, whilst the straights kept Dempseys alive when most gay punters moved over to Fuel, we are not tolerating the hettie attitude any longer. We have straight members who we know are gay friendly and these will remain for the time being, provided we don't get any hassles. As with any pub/club - gay or straight - leave your attitude at the door or don't even attempt to cross the line. So if you come to Dempseys with straight non members, please don't cause a scene and accept what we're trying to do. We need the support of the gay scene to achieve this. If we can achieve it then maybe others will follows suit. I am on the front line 3 nights a week and will stand my ground

I agree with the strict membership policy. It might explain why there was such a much more friendly, comfortable atmosphere on Sunday. Best wishes to Colin, hope he is OK.

He's fine and heals well. He's taking his first holiday in 2 years next week. There are some great people of all orientations that frequent Dempseys but lately there have been some issues with members of staff allowing any crap through the door. I've been working the past few nights and have refused entry to many punters. After all, it's a gay place and needs to be hassle free. It was good last night, for the first time in ages, to have to deal with a drunken queen who was adamant he'd lost his green coat - even though his partner was adamant he didn't possess one. There was a bit of bitch slapping between the 2 of them, rather than boots in and fists flying like we've seen over the past few months from our hardcore hettie visitors.

I'd like to come and see the Drag Cabaret on 7th May, and if it is at all possible, do one or two songs as a 'warm-up' as well, if others are doing that. I myself have a booking at a charity night on 5th May as support act at Stardus/Cutlers Club, in aid of the Childrens' Hospital, so I'll be around for that weekend! I've got some 'new' songs I will be doing (all LIVE, not mimed!), such as Joni Mitchell's 'Big Yellow Taxi'!

Just a quick note in appreciation of last Monday's Drag Act, 'Adrian James'. He was SUPERB, as any pro who has worked for over a decade would be, and as I found out in meeting him afterwards, he is such a lovely chap to talk to!

Dempseys has been going downhill for ages, even one of the door staff got beaten up recently by a group of straight guys. It seems to be all down to money, otherwise why let big groups of straight lads in anyway because they're obviously not there to be tolerant of gay people. Its a shame really because it used to be a good night out a few years ago.

Not a fight really. I'd warned the Turks, as I did with all our straight members, that this was a gay bar and any hassles from them would mean a total life ban. Sadly, a drunken queen insisted on touching one of them up, he warned her 3 times that he was straight and finally got very angry. Gay or straight, if you don't want touching up by someone then it's your right. One of our gay members heard him shouting and grabbed the Turk by the throat - no idea why, but it happened. In trying to assess what had happened, I escorted him downstairs - he was angry. He mates were angry because they thought he'd kicked off and decided to teach him a lesson. It all blew over in about 15 mins or so. The queen who'd caused the problem was escorted out later, the gay member who had grabbed the Turk by the throat explained why, and the Turk who was angry apologised for kicking off, albeit I've asked him not to come back for a month or so. Tough decision to make but we're contiinuing with our "No non members, no guests" policy in order to rectify the damage that having over 10,000 members regardless of their sexuality, has created. I will continue to make sure that Dempseys "gayens" itself up. Our gay members are now staying longer, the atmosphere is soooooo gay and we can finally concentrate on the things that matter, rather than trying to stop our hettie macho gang members from trying to kill themselves and anyone else that happens to be in the way. Hope you're all starting to have a bit of fun now!!!

As an extra comment, it is a gay bar, for gay people and also gay friendly people. The door staff now will only allow gay non members to be members. As for guests, please don't try and beg for your straight friend to be allowed in. Help us to help you. We're trying to use discretion but I won't commit my comments on an open forum.

Pink Pound Needed.

Do you fancy owning a genuine authenticated signed KYLIE gold disc.

A local charity the Burton Street Foundation are holding a charity auction on the 17th May at SWFC and have the above mentioned KYLIE item up for grabs. Come on dig deep and grab a piece of KYLIE. This queen has already bid £100.00.

Burton Street do a fantastic job supporting people with disabilities, learning needs and those at a social disadvantage. Call Karen in the Development Office at Burton Street on 0114 2332908 for info.

Thank you.

Well handled UK Sentinel - though by the sounds of it with the new laws enacted since last week where gay clubs cannot discriminate against straight people and vice versa you are going to have a lot more work on your hands with incidents like this ! - you will always get the str8 element who like going to gay clubs just to see the "animals in the zoo" or to judge how attractive they are to members of the opposite sex by seeing how attractive they are to those of their own same sex - I don't know why they do it instead of just going to str8 clubs in the first place unless they are secretly bi - but then I guess they think dempseys is easier and cheaper to get into .... by the way not everyone who is gay is out and consequently dont always carry a membership card on them so I guess they are affected by the new policy also :-)

Well I popped down there last night, with a friend from work and had a good time, the food was lovely, and we were both starving as well. yummy.

Added bonus of a stripper, which I had completely forgotten about, and she loved that bit. :)

Also the new idea of not letting many straights in has created a much better atmosphere indeed.

Is it me or is that a very "fuel megathread" type of response? We're trying to draw a happy medium with what is wrong with the gay scene in Sheffield these days. You have to take the rough with the smooth - or the bitching with the praise. There's nothing to be gained by pointing the finger at anyone now that the event is history. We have to be pro-active rather than re-active and aim to turn things around so that we deliver what our gay members want.

No it's not. It's an observation, once something new opened all your customers abandoned you, there were multiple threads on here about how crap Dempseys was and how fantastic Fuel was, now the novelty of Fuel has worn off it's the other way round. There is no loyalty on the gay scene you must know that.

Nick,

I think you have made some valid points. There is no loyality on the gay scene, Fuel was the new "in thing" and Dempseys etc got dumped, now people are walking away from Fuel and Dempseys is busy again. To a degree thats the pub/club business, trends come and go. I also go regular to Manchester but try and support the Sheffield scene when I can, even if it is crap. Where we mainly differ is the "do I go out in straight pubs or gay pubs" and being "visibly" gay. I do go in lots of straight bars but PREFER gay bars if they are decent and I like being gay and I am proud of being gay (20 years of gay pride marches have an effect on you) lol. I need no permission or approval from the straight community, as the song goes "I am what I am" deal with it.

Thanks for your contributions, Sheffield needs a good honest debate about it's scene or lack of it !

Hello everyone. I've just signed up to the Sheffield forum today after stumbling accross it accidently. I've just spent the past 2 hours reading pages and pages of comments about the Sheffield Gay scene! I too have to agree with what a few of you say. Sheffield, the 4th biggest city in the UK and the in all honesty, the gay scene is a little on the small side looking at some of our sister Cities like Manchester and Leeds. I do think though that gradually it is improving and people all over are putting in a genuine effort to improve things for everybody. I've spent hours and hours trawling around the likes of Fuel, Dempsey's, Lions Lair, Xes, Climax etc etc. We've got more choice now than we've had in a long long time and I feel that it's only fair that everybody should support each venue. Everybody has their favourite but you can have too much of a good thing in my opinion. If you've got the odd pink pound to spare, why not spread it around each venue. Your going to meet a wider scope of people and bring the Gay community within Sheffield together!
Just one last quick thing! I went to Dempsey's on Sunday night, it was the best night out I have had in many a month! The new ruling on the door certainly seems to be working very well. The atmosphere was fab and I look forward to my next visit with it's new found 'GAY' atmosphere. Really good to see it doing well again!

Decided to share of funy little story with you. I went for a drink on Friday night up Woodseats, whilst in the Woodseats Hotel in noticed some straight lads (they told me they were straight a few weeks back in Dempseys) my mate was convinced they were gay, and he's straight, I'm still not sure about them !!! All aged about 18.

Anyway, I was getting a burger from Panda Pizza when some of the "straight" lads mates came into the shop for some chips, one of them answered his mobile with the greeting "hi mate, where are you, where, Dempseys, what you doing in there you bent B....d" he then hung up and after chatting to the others for a few minutes they were ordering a taxi to take them to Dempseys !! As a gay man I find this whole "Metrosexual man" thing a bit strange. Why would you use the phrase "Bent B....d" and then go drinking in a gay bar ?????

Welcome to the Forum and Dempseys Megathread, Dronfield Lad.

BTW, I know last Monday was a Bank Holiday; I was was spending a quiet evening at home with the boyfriend, but had been wondering if Dempseys had a cabaret on Monday, as they normally have on Bank Holidays.

How was last Monday, and when is it likely they will do another cabaret?

I love Tony, but it's a little strange when he is stood at your side most of the night waltching your every move. I know he is doing his job but it's just too strange. It wouldn't be so bad if he had a conversation with you but he just looks at you, smiles, minces around and then before you know it he's stood next to you again. (Tony I love you but you are making me nervous).

I for one must say Tony's a lovely chap, but the only thing I wish of him (From a fellow Drag Queen) would be if he could dress up in drag more often, perhaps once a week; he looked fantastic earlier this year as Mama Morton, and this would sure bring more punters in!!!

Were you in on Saturday. It was a great night, chatted with loads of people, got very drunk and it was very busy. Tony was stood watching me and my friends, all gay, like a hawk again, I turned around at one point and bumped into him, he was virtually on my shoulder, someone please explian why ? Well decided to do something different on Sunday (last night) and went to Dempseys.

Strange night it was, saw someone who usually doesnt come in on a Sunday, and saw someone for the first time in months, and had a couple games of pool, which I dont really do.

The doorman was for some odd reason asking if I was having a good time, and he knew my name,:huh:

Then bumped into richhen04, I was sat next to him and he didnt know who I was (I did tell him in the end), I wrote his Forum name of a piece of paper and left it there, the look on his face when he saw it, lol. Anyway a very nice man and I found someone camper than me :):)

Then had to endure the journey home in the rain.

All in all a good night, if a little wierd.

Just a copy of the info posted re. the security alert in London today:

Suspicious Device In Central London
The Metropolitan Police are working hard to reopen central London as soon as they can, following the suspicious device being found in Haymarket. We hope that this will not have an impact on tomorrow’s event.

It is not though that the device had anything to do with our event, or Canada Day which takes place today in Trafalgar Square. Extra security precautions, such as the removal of rubbish bins, are being put in place to make Pride London 07 as safe as possible.

The parade assembles in Baker Street from 11am and heads-off down Oxford Street at 1pm.

Hope that is OK to post, as a few Dempseys regulars (Including myself) will be at London Pride tomorrow.

You guys are barking up the wrong tree completely. Dempsey's is a rented building and the buildings are eventually going to be pulled down to make way for new developments (probably over-priced shoe box sized apartments like everywhere else in Sheffield ) I am the first to admit that Dempsey's is not cutting edge or even flash. But what those guys have done with what was a **** hole for down and outs is great. Think about it, Colin and Keiron ran Madisons (for those who can remember it) and a pub before that. They saw off the competition from Planet etc and are still around today.Their philosophy has alwasy been that they want you to be happy to spend your money in their places, not that they have you over a barrell as someone suggested further up the page. Dempsey's is what it is; a small friendly down to earth place that gives you a good night out. Why not have a contrast to Fuel?

Have to agree here, what more could you want, a pool table, friendly bar/door staff who have been there for ages it seems, and screens downstairs to sit and watch some videos.

I shall be down there tonight again, will be good to see if the "no smoking" has kept alot of people away, although you can smoke outside now, so its not that bad.

Shame their window in the downstairs door got smashed, :(

Funny I noticed the same individual doing the same thing to me the other night but personally it doesnt bother me and I dont feel intimidated - but then I am on the other end of the age spectrum from malecat - I think its just something unusual - maybe he feeds off peoples auras <sound of X-Files looming in the background>

Also regarding Dempseys itself I personally think its a great and friendly venue on the rare times that I visit and would be a shame if it eventually has to shut down cos building is rented. I dont think in terms of friendliness and warmth that fuel or lions lair can hold a candle to it - but then I suppose they have their own attractions and crowd - each to their own ...

That window apparently got smashed by a 'customer' who happens to be a bouncer from some other establishment, so I heard.

i'll be missing that Manchester coach trip on the 28th July, as it looks like I have a booking at an important party the same night.

good to hear that Adrian James is back on the August Bank Holiday, and I'll try and get back in time for that, from Manchester where I am singing at several venues for the Pride Weekend!
Do come over and see me there!

To the young lad and his fag hags who were outside Dempseys at the end of the night on Saturday.

You were so rude to my friend who hadn't even spoken to you or done anything to you (calling someone a fat ugly ******* is school yard bullying). I hope in the sober light of day you are ashamed of yourself. You spoilt what had been a great night.

You "said" you would remember my face (some kind of threat) more important I will remember yours and do all I can to get you banned from Dempseys. To your friend who intervened and pulled me off you and said he was "ashamed" of you, can I say Thank You, and I stand by my words that you are better than him or the nasty fag hags he was with.

Can anyone tell me what is going to happen to Dempsey's with regards to the Moor redevelopment? Will it be relocated if the bottom of the Moor is pulled down etc? Sorry, I haven't been to Dempsey's for ages so I haven't heard anything.

See here: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=311939

The image shows the whole dempseys block is to be replaced by a tall building. I'm not sure how firm the plans are but the whole of the Moor is getting a refurb so i assume it will go eventually as will Fuel.

367squadron
31-07-2007, 06:16 PM
Prolly somehwere cheap and out of the way if it does reopen. But this surely must be a few years yet- Who knows. I know there are plans for the moor that include more of a mix rather than just shops so bars and clubs will open around there making it more 24hr rather than it being while the shops are open.

Tyranna
31-07-2007, 07:24 PM
I've heard that Dempsey's will be able to stay on the current site 'until 2012', when the current building is finally phased for redevelopment, possibly as part of one big site including the Moorfoot 'Pyramid'.

Personally i think it not very different to before? It does look more modern and cleaner but the music and crowd hasn't changed. That is not meant in a negative way I think the place is ok when we have been. Though my opinion on the music is not so positive the mixing is non existent and can jump from r&b to cheesy sing-a-long in a matter of seconds that is an area I think needs some attention. It is one thing to cater for all but not in the same 30 minute set.

Why should it not have a cage? It really is just a small stage with bars and now it even has stair access for those that can't jump up and squeeze between the bars ( I think if you can't jump and squeeze through you probably shouldn't be in there anyway!)

At least the staff are friendlier than certian other venues and remember you with a welcoming attitude and the door prices aren't silly. £6 for fuel ! I used to spend 3 weeks in Miami every yr and we paid $15 for Crobar (£7) http://www.crobar.com/ http://www.crobar.com/design/ and that is a club worth £7!

Taking into account the regeneration in Sheffield City Centre and the planned demolition of Lions Lair, Fuel and Dempseys over the next few years then maybe it's time for some gay business men/women to come together with the City Council and Chamber of Commerce to plan out a "gay village", a few bars and a club, cafes etc, I am not talking on the scale they have in cities like Manchester or Newcastle just something small but accessible, bit like Belfast, which I was very impressed with.

I went in there for the first time in a couple of months and was disappointed at the atmosphere, less friendly than it used to be.
Now I may be one of the quieter souls in there, not the life and soul of the party, but as someone who has been going regularly for over 3 years, you would at least expect someone to ask how you are, how you've been etc.
This is especially so when a certain member of bar staff, that I would previously have counted as friend, knew I had been in hospital during the intervening period, and why.
Any friendly words said, I now know to be just that, words, as I KNOW they do not actually care about their customers.
and before people point out how busy they were, they weren't busy last night.

Why are the gay people of Sheffield so different to other cities. Seriously, 'we feel safer'!? I kiss my boyfriend in all the 'straight' places, you think anyone cares? no! You may get the odd look but seriously NO. I don't understand why the gay people of Sheffield feel they need to lock themselves away, how is gay pride going to work here next year?? You go to canal street in Manchester there are loads of straight people, do you feel threatened? NO, haha. Come on people :loopy:. I don't understand these membership places, silly! You don't get membership places in Soho, only for the exclusive bars, COME ON SHEFFIELD CATCH UP!

Its not for kittens.

Thanks, Pete; it's to help fund a safe-house for persecuted LGBT people in Iraq!

Remember, it is on TONIGHT, MONDAY.

There are also other events for the same worthy cause throughout this week!

Well, I popped down for the cabaret night on Monday.

Tyranna was on first, doing a Amy Whinehouse inpresonation (I think thats who Tyranna was doing), she couldn`t keep the wig on, had to hold it with one hand, miming wasnt upto much either, probably didnt have time to learn the song.

The rest of the Dempseys bar staff did a good job, all in all a nice night out.

I believe tonight is killer pool tournament or something.

I don't think it safer. My mate got gay bashed on the Moor and put into hospital when he was on his way to Dempsey's. He even gets strangers calling him names on the street on a fairly regular basis. This wouldn't happen in London, you're more likely to be beaten up for homophobia than for being gay in London.

Thanks, Pete, for getting it more-or-less right about who I was impersonating. I got almost universal applause for such a shockingly original take on poor Amy; sorry about the wig; I couldn't get hold of any elastic upstairs to strap it on, so I had to hold it, but most people there thought the way I let the wig topple deliberately halfway through the performance added something to the show.
BTW, I had been practicing miming the song A LOT. It was just at the beginning that I decided to be drinking some beer to add realism to Amy's drunkenness, but I missed the first lines!

Now, Pete, STOP baiting me, the mods, and other users of the Forum. as I WILL PERSONALLY REPORT YOU to the administrators.

You are, however, OK, as allowed under the Forum rules, to mildly and without prejudice offer your criticisms, but if you overstep the line again too far, or repeatedly, such as when you have criticised a certain DJ who is a personal friend of mine, as well as a certain commercial establishment which I will not name here, myself and my colleagues will NOT HESITATE to take the STRONGEST ACTION, which WILL, if necessary include the involvement of the authorities.

Now, that I have at long last got this out from under my belt, I hope you will remember that this is the season of Goodwill, and that we can remain friends from this moment on, and I will not have to say anything like this again on the Forum.

P.s. Forgot to ask users to get BACK TO TOPIC, which is namely DEMPSEYS CLUB, which is having more charity events on for the remainder of the week, and do NOT use this thread to criticise/moan about/praise the careers of individual performers.

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year To All:love:

Who on earth do you think you are? Who are these 'authorities' of which you speak? The thought police?

I appreciate that you have a poor grasp of reality, but if you wish to retain any amount of credibility please give it a rest. You are becoming tiresome.

Oh, FFS. Please, people....can't we have a seperate gay b*tching thread...this is boring. I know don't contribute much to the gay scene threads, despite having a great interest, but that's purely because it just ends up being a pantomine of a discussion; what kind of impression are you really trying to create? Boring, boring, boring

Oooo! Yes please. Lets set up a gay bitching thread. In fact I have a fantastic idea, why don't we set up a whole gay bitching bar too! We can call it Dempsey's. Maybe we can even start a thread about it here!!

Tyranna dear I am devastated to have missed your performance - especially now as I know it was Amy Winehouse that you were doing (I am a big fan of hers and I try to emulate her most times) .. but alas I was busy making preps for my Xmas trip - yes I am making a PA in Ireland over the Xmas and New Year period (not in drag I hasten to add) so I wont be back troubling these threads till January - when I intend to start a whole new Carby goes to ....xxx series with my frank and honest opinions about various places in Sheffield and surrounds writen in a grippingly travel writerly way .... in the meantime I wish everyone on the forum (including the bitches) a very merry Xmas and New Year ....

Here here...putting grievances aside for this time of year, whether christian or not, is an important step...perhaps something that could roll on to the new year???? Come on good people of Sheffield, it's worth a try.
