Since updating my service with BT, I now have Modem Protection on.I know what my modem is, but what does Modem Protection do exactly,as I already have anti- spy as well. Got a PM from a Forum member, but it didnt take me straight through to my pm like it usually does. It reminded me that I had Modem Protection on,and I had to press OK yet again.Does it just block PMs ? I eventually read my PM,but its like its double checking first.

sure you don't mean pop-up protection? it stops things from popping up, which generally stops a lot of annoying ads popping up!

Apparently it is supposed to inform you if you connect to a premium rate number (or other nasty).

Modem problems can occur when you download (sometimes unwittingly) software known as a 'dialler' that alters the number your computer uses to connect to the Internet. These diallers connect to the internet via a premium-rate (090) or international (00) telephone number rather than the number supplied by your ISP.

Whilst there are some 4,000 diallers registered with ICSTIS, the UK premium rate industry regulator, working perfectly legitimately, some websites will dupe you into producing high call charges through downloading a supposedly 'harmless' program, application, or service that will include an unregistered dialler. The dialler software is often invisible to users, running discretely in the background so that you do not notice any disruptions. Unexpectedly high call charges associated with unregistered diallers are often only discovered when you receive your phone bill.

Yes , this happend to me when i first got the PC, didn't realise the dia-up numbers changed by it'self until i got the phone bill, nearly died, but we rang the phone company and explained it, being seniors ect, they looked back at out phone bills, (Clean)
so we just had to pay a fraction of the bill.
