View Full Version : Sheffield Comedy Festival
HottyMcBuff 17-09-2005, 09:21 PM Have just driven through Hillsboro and there are posters everywhere for a comedy festival. Didn't have a chance to see if there was a web page relating to it. Should slow down. Does anyone know anything about this? Have looked on the Grin Up North home page and this does not seem to have updated its news page since January.
Have had a cursory glance around the site to see if there are any other threads relating to this and there don't seem to be, if there are and a cursory look has not been good enough, I apologise for stepping on your electronic toes.
Internetowl 17-09-2005, 09:29 PM Tuesday night mate - we're playing West Ham in the cup!
Should be a reet laff!
robbie 17-09-2005, 09:43 PM it's pound a pint in the Blue Ball. Always good for a laugh :gag: :gag:
It's in October - Wednesday 19th October it's at The Caper Club at Takapuna on West Street. Really looking forward to it - I always have the best night there.
There are details on their website.
It's great people are fianlly recognising comedy in Sheffield
lastlaugh 18-09-2005, 10:40 AM Grin Up North - The Sheffield Comedy Festival runs from 7th - 23rd October. There will be a website up and running this week, but in the meantime you could have a look at www.lastlaugh.biz, and click on festival.

It's nice to see that other people appreciate the hard work!
On 19th October we've got Richard Herring headlining at Takapuna but there's loads of events going on during the 16 days including Ross Noble, Jo Brand and... ahem.. Patrick Kielty!
As a warm up to the events, on the 5th October, Archie Kelly (http://www.chortle.co.uk/comics/akelly.html) will be headlining the club so try and make it down. But do check out the website and show some support to comedy in Sheffield. We seem to be the only city in the country that doesn't have a thriving comedy scene and I don't know why...
Murph 18-09-2005, 07:14 PM The link on 'last laugh's post (Toby?) doesn't work, so here it is:

Looking great, although not impressed that Ross Noble and Russell Howard clash!

Honestly. go and see Patrick Kielty. Long before Fame Academy and Love Island and whatever else he's got himself mixed up in, Patrick was one of the best stand ups around. He'd just stopped the regular compering at The Empire in Belfast before I started playing it, but people there spoke of him as if he was a god. I saw him once at Edinburgh, and was blown away.
The show I'm most looking forwars to is Andre Vincent Is Unwell. It's Andre's story of his tumour, which he turned into a one off for BBC 2 called "Hurrah For Cancer". It's simply brilliant.
Internetowl 18-09-2005, 08:50 PM Robert Newman for me - met him once on a train platform waiting for a late running train - he kept the entire platform in stitches till the train arrived...
Full marks to the guy.
:D
Foxprom 19-09-2005, 10:23 AM great for sheffield a chance for people to see the culture and sights, and bring comedy to the city, will get everyone ready for the new last laugh comedy club opening up in the roundhouse 21st October, a proper comedy club with top quality comedy in a central venue, a serious alternative to a banging music night out in Sheffield.
sheffield comedy? thats a bit of an oxymoron isnt it?:D
Martin_s 23-09-2005, 05:07 PM Hey folks,
Just to let you know that the website is up and running with more info on it..

:)

That's because no one writes about it. I never see anything in the papers. Why isn't Sheffield seeking publicity for it's comedy scene?
isaidthat 23-09-2005, 06:42 PM What a great idea. This could help put Sheffield on the map. Good cultural festival and could be used to help the city move forward. 10/10 Mr Foster!!!!! But, hold on why is so little publicity abot it outside of Sheffield? Whats the tourist information service doing. This is one issue we should be shouting from the rooftops about!!! Lets not sell Sheffield Short
super_pie 27-09-2005, 12:13 PM At the moment the gigs I'm probobly going to try and get to are 'Mark Thomas & Rob Newman', 'Mitch Benn' and Daniel Kitson (never seen him before but heard he's excellent).
Also the new venue at the Roundhouse looks really excellent, going to have to have a look there. What are other people planning to go see?
Hopefully this is just the start of things and in years to come the sheffield comedy festival will become a regular and important part of the circuit
Infact i'm suddenly thinking about a forum meet-up at the new roundhouse (although might be a bit to expensive for some of you. £15 i think)
ZEDEX48K 27-09-2005, 12:38 PM Daniel Kitson is well funny! I have my ticket already!!!!
JarvisCocker 28-09-2005, 02:26 PM The publicity of for this event is pretty abysmal. May be due to lack of funds but it needs way more push and awareness.
i saw an ad for it on the side of a bus this lunchtime! :P
