I already have 3 set-top boxes, running out of plug sockets. What do people know about project canvas?

It's for on demand programming delivered by your broadband connection. It's not replacing your freeview/freesat/sky/virgin box, it's adding to them. If you're not interested in watching TV programmes when you want rather than the broadcasters, then you don't need to worry about getting one.

Apart from the BBC, it also has (amongst others) ITV, Channel 4, Five, BT and Carphone Warehouse.

Nope, nothing like ondigital (which was the first incarnation of digital terrestrial), as that was a normal broadcast system with linear channels, delivered over the air. Project Canvas (youview?) will be delivered over the internet, and allow you to choose what programmes (rather than channels) you want to watch, utilising the BBC iPlayer/ITV Player/4OD/BT Vision infrastructure. In terms of set-top-box, it's not like anything that has gone before, and has only become possible in the last couple of years.
