Disco_Cat 16-09-2005, 04:20 PM Try the Blue Moon Cafe near the Cathedral or the Olive tree Cafe near the Winter Gardens, but you really should go out of the town centre to Kumquat Mae.
Tartempion 16-09-2005, 04:21 PM I like Blue Moon Cafe next to the Cathedral. It's more of a cafe than a restaurant though. Depends what you're after I guess... It's kind of a light, airy, high ceilingy place - probably more of a daytime place than evening although I've never been at night. They serve alcohol and they're open in the evening though.
The food's great anyway - really nice home made hearty but healthy stuff.
Can't think of anywhere else. Sorry.
graffy 16-09-2005, 04:49 PM thanks for the tips!!where exactly is the kumquat?
bertie749 16-09-2005, 04:57 PM It is on Abbey Dale Road, catch the No97 out of town
NUCAD 16-09-2005, 04:59 PM My partner is veggie and we drive kumquat almost everyday and she always says 'i wonder what they are like'
Can the food and service be recommended and if so what did you have ?
Thanks in anticipation
lomaxkinesis 16-09-2005, 06:38 PM Kumquat Mae is excellent, the service is lovely the menu is not huge, but covers all tastes, I would not suggest what to have, as we all have different tastes. I had the aubergene parmiaini I think thats what it was called and I really enjoyed it.
NUCAD 16-09-2005, 06:44 PM One added complication is my partner doesnot eat mushrooms so how much would that remove from the menu ?.
Its her B'day tomorrow and although we are already going out with family i would like to arrange for next week or one evening.
lomaxkinesis 16-09-2005, 08:27 PM I am pretty certain that the selction is wide enought to enable msuhrooms to not be on the plate. If there is problems I am sure you could just ask the chef to leave the mushrooms out.

My girlfriend is also a veggie, doesn't like mushrooms, and has her birthday tomorrow...
Are you knocking off my woman? :o

Kumquat Mae is a fantastic restaurant, the staff are the friendliest I’ve ever met and the food and atmosphere are superb. It’s not licensed however but I prefer this as it brings the cost of a meal right down especially since they don’t charge any corkage. Thinking about it the only problem I’ve ever experienced their is the portions are too big and I always fill up on the fantastic starters.
I’m sure that if you phoned and asked they could make something mushroom free or let you know what is/what they can do mushroom free. Their very accommodating to peoples dietary needs.
If you wear glasses however make sure you take them as they don’t have menus but put everything up on a chalk board.
I’d recommend the Aubergine Parmesan thing previously mentioned (I don’t think it had mushrooms either) and the Mezzo plate with stuffed vine leaves, hummus and other treats.
NUCAD 17-09-2005, 01:29 PM No shes called Kay but thats one helluva coincidence.:heyhey:
Shed 30 today (hope she doesnt find out i told everyone):suspect:
EdnaKrabappe 17-09-2005, 07:47 PM I like the veggie choices at 543 and Wig and pen usually. Not just something smothered in cheese. Although they've got that as well if that's what you like.
There is always an Indian - loads of choice there!
Crimson 18-09-2005, 02:43 PM Blue Moon is great, but not esp romantic.
Olive Garden on Surry St has been closed down for quite a while.
I usually enjoy Kumquat Mae and the atmosphere is better for romance. The food is fairly expensive but tempered by the BYO policy.
Sheiks & QueTal on West St are veggie friendly, but to be honest just about every decent restaurant is ok for veggies nowdays.
Avoid chain pub meals though as they are stuck in the 70s - Veg Lasagne, Mushroom Stroganoff etc.
graffy 19-09-2005, 10:01 PM thanx again everybody, well appreciated! I eventually took him for a pint in showroom first and we found that their veggie menu was appealing, i had veggie risotto (did not want to be offensive ordering a carnivorous dish) and it was gorgeous!!
I'll bear in mind your tips and will probably try kumquat mae next time!
