View Full Version : Sony psp sold out everywhere
I'v noticed that sony do this every time a new console is released... they dont supply the shops with enough, surley they know what the demand is going to be like. do they do this intensionaly? is it some kind of sales tactic?
Beakerzoid 16-09-2005, 06:35 They do know the demand...and even delayed the UK release to try to meet the demand, but unfortunately the consoles take time to make, and they are still selling in other countries - thus pretty difficult to match a constantly rising demand.
At least this time around they managed to get the majority of the preorders, with the people who ordered in the last couple of weeks being the only ones left waiting.
The second shipment in to the UK is due soon (next couple of weeks). Several retailers (like Game) still have some to sell, others (like Woolworths) could have sold 5 times the amount they were allocated in the first shipment.
I think its a very brilliant sales tactic by Sony.. thats why they are the best in the console stakes and now the portables as well.
They know full well people want PSP's - so by limiting the stock they send out, anticipation for the product goes through the roof and people go mental trying to buy one.
I've ordered mine from Great Universal catalog for the princely sum of £299- even thats going to take 4 weeks to arrive!!
Lickable 16-09-2005, 07:51 It must be a sales tactic. It probably has something to do with the production line too, but i very much doubt it being the only reason.
I don't mind. I have mine. Its just a damn shame its 1.51. Grrrr
superted666 16-09-2005, 07:57 SOld out at like middnight everywhere i went on the 1st said so.
except dixons who dont allow pre-orders :D
got mine then next day or so they were sold out too
thetorch 16-09-2005, 08:02 I'm waiting for the X-box 360! (sure enough that's the x-circle?)
oasismark 16-09-2005, 08:40 The PSP's cost more to make than $ony sell them for.
So $ony cannot afford to have them sitting on shelfs so they limit initial stock, or so i read.

Why a shame its 1.51 then mate?
:)
I think there is more security to stop you getting all the homebrew stuff like copied games and emulators. Things like this (http://www.hacker.co.il/psp/bochs/)
..might be wrong tho
remeber the ps2 slimline? that was releaced the same time last year and sold out the 1st day, then they didnt get another delivery til 3 days before christmas, is that likely to happen again?
alchemist 16-09-2005, 10:05 hmm, take a perfectly good machine with a stable OS and then add an unstable memory hungry package on top
yes, i can see the attraction there, NOT!!!
seriously tho, WHY????

I can't get any homebrew... :(
Personally I'm thinking of getting a GPX2 :) looks much better to me than a PSP and it's less mainstream which is way better for my geeky image ;)
http://www.gbax.com/aboutgp2x.html
plays music, plays divx, will have emulators for most older consoles... can connect to a TV... will have a massive homebrew scene like the GP32 did/does :) Definitly an interesting handheld!

Young fella- your prayers have been answered!
All you gotta do is upgrade to v2.0 and then downgrade back to 1.5 using one of the PSP downgraders out there on the net at the moment :)
God bless the tinternet...
And good news today- the PSP stock is back for Oct 14th apparently at Great Universal catalog.
Beakerzoid 01-10-2005, 22:16 Yup...the 1.51 and above wont play homebrew software, of which there is a load! Check http://www.pspupdates.com for an idea of what you can get for the 1.50 version.
Things like Doom, Quake, MAME, various other emulators.
Hopefully Sony will see sense and allow Homebrew apps to run on the new PSPs, issuing out a new bit of firmware to open it up again.
Oh..a word of advice...the downgraders dont always work! They have been known to damage PSPs. The homebrew sites seriously warn against using them! Quite a few people have a nice PSP shaped paperweight through using them.

The new 2.0 downgrader is totally safe from what I've heard at the minute- I havent seen any reports of people damaging their new PSP's from using it on the PSP forums at the minute- I'll keep checking though just in case mind :)
Beakerzoid 02-10-2005, 06:46 Check the forums on pspupdates. There is one person insisting it works, and he used it okay, whilst a load of other are saying "How? My PSP is broken now!"
Seems that it doesn't work all that well downgrading, and from what I can gather it is the model number which is affecting it too (which means that the model number of the european releases will be a problem machine).
Simply put, I ain't risking damaging my machine by doing a process which a lot of people seem to have knackered their PSPs doing. I'll wait until I get some confirmation from a reliable source (like Official PSP mag who mentioned the homebrew market recently, hoping that Sony would allow it)
