A bit further out from Sheffield (near Clowne) is Bondhay - it's a nice course, but possibly a bit expensive (long time since I last played it).

Not a good course to go to if you are a newbie. It's very hard now. Lots of trees and bunkers.

Dont know how it compares with others but my other half takes our son to Bonday some weekends thinks its about 4 quid to do the nine hole family course. Don't suppose its bad for a couple of hours entertainment. What my hubby does say though is that Bonday is a far superior course to many of the others around and about.

List here. (http://www.playgolfsheffield.com/content.php?nPageID=45) Knock yourself out (not literally..).
You can play most private clubs as a visitor, but you will be subject to tighter dress restrictions (no jeans/trainers etc) and may have to play during the week (weekends are sometimes reserved for members, especially during winter).

If you are a infrequent golfer then the access and cost of the muni's is ideal
