View Full Version : Good/Bad restaurants in Sheffield
Guest 12-12-2002, 11:56 AM Bad:
Ask Pizza, Division Street
I feel the pizza's are greatly over priced (around £7-8 each) and also the service tends to be very slow. It's one of the few restaurants in the City centre and therefore it's often very busy - but don't let this trick you in to thinking it's good.
Good:
Piccolos, West Street
Lovely little Italian restaurant. It doesn't look that spectacular from the outside, but once you get inside you will find a friendly and cosy restaurant. The staff are great and the food is authentic. I really recommend the garlic bread for a starter - it's not what you'd expect!
What are you favourite/worst restaurants in town?
Guest 13-12-2002, 12:33 AM There is a restaurant guide for sheffield on the web which may be useful - www.sheffieldrestaurant.co.uk
Guest 13-12-2002, 02:26 PM I was wondering which was the best Indian restaurant in town? I'm not worried about the price - I just want good service and tasty food!
Guest 13-12-2002, 02:56 PM Best Indian in sheffield has to be the shapla at the bottom of the moor. Bukowskis on London Road has a great atmosphere and is a great place to get drunk! The chilli melters kick ass too!!!
Guest 13-12-2002, 07:30 PM I like the place on West Street in the city centre, can't remember the name but it's next to the Tapas restaurant. Try there.
perry 02-01-2003, 09:43 PM For a good take away curry go to the Bilash in Sharrowvale
Guest 09-01-2003, 01:15 PM The Kashmir in Spital Hill IS the best place for a curry in Sheffield. It is a very basic place but the food is fantastic and cheap. There is a pub over the road which is allows you to take drinks over.
Highly recommended!
Guest 09-01-2003, 01:47 PM Are there any good places to get veggie meals in sheffield, or veggie restaurants? OR any normal places with a good selcetion of veggie meals?! Thanks Sal.
mikey 09-01-2003, 02:23 PM Veggie Kumquat Mae on Abbeydale rd is supposed to be very good
Good Indian - Indiana - London Rd Bring your own beer/wine, excellent service -
Best Newcomer - Aliway - London Rd - good value wide mixture of food
Best Pub Food - The New Norfolk Arms, Hollow Meadows, Manchester Rd
Guest 10-01-2003, 12:47 PM Hi,
Thanks Mikey for that info will look them up shortly! thanks again sal.
Garth 11-01-2003, 01:07 AM I think La Mancha on west street, right near the tram stop, is really good.
Geoff 11-01-2003, 02:48 AM Is that the one opposite the Barracks and next to StudentComp? If so then I don't really rate it. When did you last go there?
richard 11-01-2003, 12:06 PM No, the one next to Student Comp used to be called FLying Pizza (I cant think what its called now), and is an Italian. La Mancha is a Spanish/Mexican place farther down the road, which does great Tapas. Me and my girlfriend have been there about 4 times in the last two years and we just much our way through all the tapas. Im a big fan of their Calamari.

The question was good/bad restaurants.
So now we've got bad above I'll say Marco@Milano's for a good one.
Sorry, it was too easy Jack
grafikhaus74 01-05-2008, 09:11 AM I'd second Piccolos as an 'authentic' Italian. Flying Pizza is still there (West Street/Upper Hanover Street), but can't seem to make up it's mind what to call itself. Sometimes it's Pizza volante. Anyway, they're all here (http://www.sheffield-central.com/restaurants.htm).
LJB23 01-05-2008, 10:44 AM GOOD RESTAURANTS
Bay Leaves - Indian restaurant and take away in Ecclesfield, really nice food and great service.
Sette Colli - Italian in hillsborough, so yummy.
Mangla - Indian near wicker, lovely lovely food.
La Civita Da Roberto - Italian at Hillsborough, great service and great food
BAD RESTAURANTS
La Tasca - spanish in meadowhall, food was cold, took ages to come, wine was warm.
Waddle 01-05-2008, 08:37 PM If you want a quality Indian, you cant beat Butlers Balti House at the top of Brook Hill
Never disappoints
we go to eat out every week mum decided to go for indian this weekend we choice to go to everest restaurant at heeley .as soon as we walk in the restaurant very warm welcome by staff different then others. cut it short food was delicious and excellent service .best of all in sheffied we r going back next week.
Perhaps this will help people decide.
Incidentally only 2 Sheffield pubs get 5 stars . The Riverside and the Bankers Draft.

belinda062 08-06-2008, 08:26 PM will try....sounds nice....thx
jemson 08-06-2008, 10:49 PM Good - we like Ethio-Cubana on Arundel Gate, Kum-quat-mae, Inter Siam on LDN Rd., Coach and Horses in Dronfield, BB`s, and Dilshad`s on Chesterfield Road.
Bad - Italians in Woodseats, Everest in Heeley, Leoni`s (?) in Town, Que Pasa and Nirmal`s on West st., and most over-priced pub food!!!
mightymouse 12-06-2008, 03:12 PM Good - The Peacock, Owler Bar - great home cooked pub food definitely worth the wait. (bit far from the city)
Good - Original Kebabish or variation in the name, on cemetery road near Greens fitness - very good food, friendly and makes some of the best nan bread around here i feel.
Good - Noodle Inn, London Rd. - great portions and some of the best chinese "fast" food. try the salt and pepper pork chop with rice.
Good - Wong Ting, the Moor - great service, authentic chinese sit in restaurant. ask for some "real" (what we chinese eat) chinese recomendations, not for the faint hearted
GOOD - Damons Restaurant, Crystal Peaks - Great service, great food what more can i say? best steaks in town. (bit far tho)
Good - Papa Cicio's (spelling might be wrong), Crosspool - Fabolous italian food, great service. should book ahead cuz it gets really busy. bad idea for walk ins on thurs, fri and sat.
BAD - Bahn Thai, London Rd - I know loads of caucasians love that place but trust me, its not all that cut out especially cuz the quality have dwindled. used to have lots of mates working there so i know what its like. plus beware of the sunday buffet!
BAD - Red Lion on penistone road - service is excellent but the steak was so dry and i could actually smell that its a frozen one. the vegetables were cooked way ahead so its brown and slightly unsavoury. maybe its just bad steaks?
Prolly have more but cant think off the top of my head
jemson 12-06-2008, 03:38 PM Interesting. I`m glad to hear someone else say Bahn Thai is over-rated. I reckon I know what good thai food tastes like and they`re not it imo.
mightymouse 12-06-2008, 03:56 PM if you want good thai food, the one in buxton is pretty good and the way they cook is pretty authentic too. food at bahn thai is way too salty and they cant even make a good tom yam goong which is one of the most basic thai recipe.

Interesting again!
I often work in Buxton and we were going to go to the Thai restaurant there once but ended up in the Indian which was not good!! Must try the Thai!
Is the Thai restaurant in Dronfield any good?
Oldtrout 12-06-2008, 11:49 PM Is the Thai restaurant in Dronfield any good?
I'm not a big fan of Thai food, but the one at Holmesfield (nr Dronfield) does have a really good reputation. Worth a try I would say.
We had a really fantastic Indian meal at Aagraa (? sp) in Leopold Square last night. We were really spoilt for choice as what to order from the menu. It had so many dishes we've never seen before and everything fresh (even had a fresh fish display to choose from). We will definitely go back. Not the cheapest, but very good value for the food, service, and atmosphere. 3 of us had poppadoms/pickles to start, 3 mains, 2 rice, 2 nan, veg side dish and it cost £40. Drinks cost another £20. Excellent!!
Jessygray83 13-06-2008, 03:57 PM Deffinitely i would recommend pizza express....specially their sicilian lemonade.

Is the Thai restaurant in Dronfield any good?
i've been to the one in dronfield but hated it too, i actually worked at the one in buxton before, the place is clean, especially the kitchen and food is very authentic. the green curry you get there is fully homemade, most other shops will serve it from the packet or some ready made sauce. if you know your green curry then its a good place to try.
Pegasus100 14-06-2008, 10:34 AM Does anyone know an Italian place called La Scalla (I think!), someone sadi it was pretty good?
Cheers
Buttercup80 14-06-2008, 01:16 PM It's at Millhouses on the corner of Archer Road. I used to really like it there but went about 18 months ago and the food was very average and the service terrible. I was really disappointed and have not been back since. I keep thinking we should give it a try again as we live nearby, but can think of Italians i would rather go to so somewhere else always wins

ASK are absolutely awful. I went in there one night and they said we would have to wait for a table even though only two tables were occupied.
After about half an hour we were taken to a table. We waited half an hour for a drink because apparently emptying the dishwasher was more important. We walked out.
Favourites are that Owls restaurant in Hillsborough who's name I can't remember, Tequila's tapas are very good, the service in Tequila's is very good too.
I like 'All Bar One' too. They prove chains don't have to be bad.
Pegasus100 15-06-2008, 06:46 AM Thx..guys... Piccolos does sound good, we'll give it a shot.
funfamily 16-06-2008, 09:59 PM good - sette colli (Hillsborough), Antibos (West One)
poor - wokmania... not even a restaurant - just a hole!!
Tooeg 17-06-2008, 12:27 AM i've been to the one in dronfield but hated it too, i actually worked at the one in buxton before, the place is clean, especially the kitchen and food is very authentic. the green curry you get there is fully homemade, most other shops will serve it from the packet or some ready made sauce. if you know your green curry then its a good place to try.
All the true Thai restaurants in Sheffield and Chesterfield i.e. thai owned, with thai chefs, most definitely make their own green curry. Why you would think they don't, I can't imagine. Most of the chefs come from the top hotels in Bangkok or the expensive resorts. They have years of training they wouldn't know how to not do it properly.
mightymouse 17-06-2008, 03:59 AM not all of them unfortunately, the ones that i know are just some dude being trained by the present cook sadly. there are only a handful of them who were cooks originally from thailand. and by the way if they used to cook in hotels in bangkok then you are sure that they suck. in thailand all the good food are from the market or some hole or road side. hotel food is just expensive and overated.
you guys remember bahn nah? i used to work there as the starter chef. guess what the cook is this little boy that the owners shipped from a farm. he didnt know **** and was thought everything he knew. they cooked everything using mae ploy sauces so where is the authenticity?

The first part of your post is rubbish. Given that there are only 5 Thai restaurants in Sheff/Chest, I think you'd better name the ones without a proper Thai chef
On your second point Bahn Nah is no longer, and not before time, if you were involved in anything they produced then you shouldn't be commenting on other restaurants.
I went several times over the last 10 or 15 years, the first time was rubbish after that it got worse.
mightymouse 17-06-2008, 01:43 PM erm i actually hated bahn nah cuz the owner was a biatch. i actually think they were really bad. plus as i have mentioned earlier just go to the one in buxton since i cant vouch for the rest of them. siam inter has its days. some days its extremely good while other days its just as bad as bahn thai. so its really up to you where you want to go. i certainly wouldnt waste my time in either. thai at the travellers is the only one i havent been and have not heard much amongst thais here in sheffield. the one in dronfield is crap too.
if you really wanted excellent thai food then goto Addie's on Earl Court in London, well if you ever go down that way. its really close to the intersection of gloucester road and earl's court. as you exit earl's court station turn left walk all the way and its near the end of the intersection. i am sure there are closer one but that is the best ever place to go for thai food that i would recomend.
Colmanspig 18-06-2008, 12:01 AM Good: Bahn Thai
Wong Ting
Aargh (spelling) in leopold square town
Rafters
Zegumas
Bad.
mangla ( trading on past glory, prices went up and quality has gone down, Aurthentic if you think half a pint of red hot palm oil is a must have in your dish.)
Aroma to much bling ave to poor food
Vietnamese Noodle bar.
Mama's and leonies
DanSeaman 18-06-2008, 05:35 PM did someone say the bankers draft had 5 stars...wot in ....fighting!!!!!!??????????
razzamatazz 18-06-2008, 06:56 PM i agree wit h LJB23,
bayleaves is fab and seete colle and la civetta de roberto. also used to love bah nahr in broomhill( thai) but its recently closed. now need to find an excellent thai resturant. any suggestions?
Colmanspig 20-06-2008, 02:15 PM i like Bahn Thai. I've never had a babd meal there , and i've had plenty of good ones.
Tooeg 21-06-2008, 11:52 PM I called at the Flouch Thai restaurant this evening. I'd not been for about a year, the meal was excellent and better than my previous visits, it's a bit of a treck for me but I think I will start going more often.
Alastair 22-06-2008, 12:14 AM We went to Marco at Milano this evening for the first time. It's absolutely top notch and couldn't be faulted for the high quality of ingredients, service and preparation. It's a nice space too, deceptively small looking from the outside. I would love to go back on a warm evening and eat outside on their terraces.
The best restaurant in Sheffield that I have been to.
Tooeg 22-06-2008, 01:10 AM Milanos had a less than successful start in life, after a very expensive fit out by the nonnas crowd, it never met its expectations. Marco after a break from Rossis decided to move back into restaurants. His battle to renew the trade lost by the failing Milanos, probably took longer than he anticipated. But his hard work has paid off, although I've not been for a couple of years, the last time I was there it was excellent. A credit to Marco and his staff, and probably as good as any restaurant in Sheffield, perhaps the best.
Milky Joe 25-06-2008, 10:58 AM Good: Antibos, Rafters, Shapla, Wasabisabi, Bar 23
Bad: La Romantica, B.B's, The Italian Place, No.1 Chinese buffet,
Carborundum 29-06-2008, 02:04 AM Perhaps this will help people decide.

God it cant be a great rating system if the Bankers Draft was top !
lyndsayx 29-06-2008, 11:54 PM any ideas for a good italian restaurant for me and the OH for my birthday? piccalos sounds good, what are the prices like?
Colmanspig 30-06-2008, 01:13 AM the scores on the doors thing is for hygine standards. and then it often is odd, a place can be very clean and you will loses marks for not having evidence of processes in , place like training quizs for pot washers and so on.
i heard you can even lose marks for selling unpasturised cheese, so posh places like milanios would say loose marks for a selling good pecorrino (spelling)
Katek 30-06-2008, 11:10 AM Where are the best Indian Takeaways in town?
sierraman 30-06-2008, 11:20 AM Bad:- The Moorlands at Owler Bar, tastless rubbish! Damons at Beighton, greasy spoon! Amraj Indian, overpriced microwaved crap!
Good:- Golden Ball at Whiston, good food and no kids allowed. Cricket at Totley, top notch food and ambience. The Hind at Wickersley, again good food, reasonably priced and attentive staff. The Eyre Arms at Calver, good food and helpful staff!
sierraman 01-07-2008, 12:23 PM did someone say the bankers draft had 5 stars...wot in ....fighting!!!!!!??????????
Bankers Draft?? I just love to see pensioners drunk at 10.30 in the morning! At least Wetherspoons are consistent, no matter which city you are in, they always attract the dross!
jennie2102 04-07-2008, 08:10 PM good - bahn thai, wig and pen, cafe guru
bad - mama and leonies, que tal, nirmals,
clarechimp 05-07-2008, 12:38 AM hello we have just been to everest at heeley and got to agree with above its the best indian we have been to and trust me we go to a lot . Last week we went to mangla it was the worst place i have ever been to tried to kill me with a korma lol
