View Full Version : Hope Valley road closures....
tgigreeny 15-09-2005, 07:38 Just to point out - Winnat's Pass is shut from Monday until the 30th of September. That's so the national trust can secure loose rocks on the roadside.
Also this morning the A57 is shut because of an accident. Its closed at the Rivelin Valley turn on the Sheffield side. The crash is at Hollow Meadows so I don't know where they're turning cars back from the Bamford side - but I'd avoid that one if I were you.
metalman 15-09-2005, 12:16 Oh no, not another crash at Hollow Meadows. Hopefully it's not too serious.
The Journal free paper was reporting last week that residents there are asking Bradfield Council for a speed limit to be imposed because somebody went off the road there.
Just you watch, before you can say knife there'll be a 50mph limit from the end of the Rivelin Valley Road all the way out to Ladybower.

With speed cameras to boot no doubt. What joy.
They will no doubt put the camera on the best straight section for overtaking, thus forcing people to overtake at less safe points. And if they did put a 50 limit section down there people who wouldnt normally overtake would then become forced too (in cars that cant really do it safely) as they get stuck behing people doing 40 - 45 the whole way.

Two problems with that quote
1. Nobody forces anyone to overtake anyone else.
2. If the car can't overtake safely, then why is it on the road and again refer to point 1
(Now stands back to be shot down in flames)

What you're saying is true but unrealistic. Trickle is pointing out that speed cameras on straights can force people to overtake in places they wouldn't otherwise. e.g a short rather than long straight. Common sense rather than the letter of the Law/Highway Code should be used a bit more in my view when placing spped cameras etc.
Seeing as people die in the real world we should surely base our plans on what actually happens rather than what SHOULD happen in theory?
Not that I condemn the idiots that overtake on blind corners etc - that's something different altogether!
Johnnywarren 15-09-2005, 14:38 If everyone drove at a sensible speed, there would be no reason whatsoever to overtake on the A57.
You either get old duffers driving at 30mph all the way, causing people to overtake, or you get tossers in their BMWs trying to get from Bamford to Sheffield in 5 minutes - overtaking everything anywhere!!

If I thought you were entirely serious on point 1 I'd spend longer on the reply, but once someone has decided to overtake they generally will tend to go for it if the opportunity arises. The speed camera is going to remove one option.... Now I'll agree in SYorks, imho the vast majority are well placed and often cover junctions where you shouldnt be overtaking (though the Holly Meadows one in question here is tempting).
Point 2, I fall into the BMW category mentioned, but the worst overtaking I see is done by cars (not motorbikes - they make me look like an angel) that spend too long on the opposite side of the road due to lack of pace. That said, the best overtaking I ever saw on snake pass was done by a Merc 220CD - measly 150bhp chip fat burning tractor. I had to pull over to let him past as it was clear I was holding him up.
Internetowl - I had you pegged way back, nice to see you are happy and with a new job

Absolutely right. I drove this route to work every morning for several years and there would always be this bizarre mix of psychopathic idiots overtaking 10 cars at a time round blind corners and old giffers in Rover 200s doing 15 MPH on the straights.
Driver education's what we need - not speed cameras. A new driving test every ten years for every driver. If you don't pass, your license is revoked until you do - that'd sort it out.
