Its prob not true then, I guess we will see in offical police statement due later
youwhatref 15-09-2005, 07:33 What bit i heard is that the joyrider (which i heard)/gunman is the one who was injured in the accident. So no sympathy from me then!

In around a quarter of an hour apparently. You must be psychic!
tgigreeny 15-09-2005, 08:13 Got some info now...
The chase started in Thorne. Went down the M1 to Notts where it ended "by normal means".
The chap who was being chased had a gun, was shot by a police baton, then he turned the gun on himself and fired. Police tried to give first aid straight away but he was pronounced dead on route to hospital in Nottingham.
The IPCC are investigating.
Nasty.
Hmmm :suspect: wonder what the 'tip off' was from another force that alerted SY Police? He must have been pretty desperate to be chased, shot with a baton round and then shoot himself.
sheffbag 15-09-2005, 11:08 Glad (if its true he's dead) tha tonly he got hurt, that could have been a lot worse
Lindseyw 15-09-2005, 11:41 It was a shooting.....
A man has shot himself dead on a motorway after a chase involving armed officers.
Officers fired a baton round at the man, who had a firearm, after stopping a car on the M1 near Nottingham.
The man then turned the firearm on himself.
A police spokeswoman said officers administered first aid at the scene, between junction 27, at Annesley, and junction 26, at Nuthall.
However, the man died en-route to the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham.
Officers stopped the car after pursuing it southbound on the M1 after the driver left an address in Doncaster and drove off at speed.
Police were making inquiries at the address shortly after midnight, after receiving information from another force.
A police spokeswoman said: "As a result of information received from another force, South Yorkshire officers made enquires at an address in Thorne, Doncaster.
"Shortly after midnight a man left the address and drove off at speed.
"Police officers pursued the vehicle south-bound on the M1 bringing it to a halt between junctions 27 and 26.
"The man was in possession of a firearm. Officers fired a baton round at the man, who then turned the firearm at himself.
"Police officers immediately administered first aid but the man was pronounced dead en route to the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham."
The motorway was closed in both directions between junctions 27 and 26, causing traffic chaos during the morning rush hour.
The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

It was. They were 'acting on information from another police force'.

Just a thought but isn't this a rather worrying indication that the baton rounds used are ineffective?

I think it's a bit too vague to be able to comment on this isn't it!?
The baton round could have been fired into his leg to stop him running away and he could still have shot himself...

Baton rounds are not meant to kill.....
RazorSHarp 15-09-2005, 15:24 Baton rounds and other non lethal rounds are very effective but if someone is high on drugs or has a very high pain threshold they will be less effective.
It could also be that they missed or it bounced off something else first taking some of the force out of the round.
And baton rounds can kill if used incorrectly or too close to the crim
Just been reading a report on the use of baton rounds in Northern ireland [needs Acrobat Reader if you wanna look]
http://cain.ulst.ac.uk/issues/police/ombudsman/po02report1.pdf
In report number 3, there are hundreds of irish people throwing bombs, planks, nails, shooting at the officers etc. The cops fire a few batons and the mob have the audacity to file 11 complaints against the officers

Waiting for a safe opportunity to make a manoeuvre?
Yeah, our coppers are a bit more cautious and calculating than our transatlantic comparison of "Geddim Butch, Geddim. . . run him off the road. . . THATS IT, Ram him, trash his motor. . . yeah!!!"
This is one of the reasons I'm proud of our boys in blue, cos they aint the coyboys in brown!!!

Skatiechik 16-09-2005, 11:52 Poor women must have been petrified, thank god she managed to ring the police otherwise the sawn of shotgun might have been used on her.
