Can you get it in the city centre?

If so... does anyone have any good recommendations for an ISP..

I've heard you may need special equipment, is a standard ADSL router not enough?

I am in the city centre and I cannot get 2mb, let alone 8mb :(

We got 8meg in WestOne, through Ask4... (The assigned company for westone)...
We just bought a router, I believe its just a router and not a modem-router... Dunno how it all works, but we used to be able to connect to the net direct, now everything is done wireless (we got a laptop) :)

I wouldnt neccessarily reccommend ASK4... There's a lot of downtime (noticably on a Sunday morning) and they keep changing the ISP, even though its supposed to be static... (BF moans cos he's a gamer and it causes problems with that, apparently)

EDIT: Its £45 per month, and is uncapped.

Go with Telewest if you can - their 10MB service, coming online in the next few weeks, is £35/month.

Keep your eye on www.bethere.co.uk they are looking at offering 24mbit (trial in London currently)

I know (as people have mentioned) Telewest are upping to 10mbit later this year.

You will need a ADSL2+ compliant router / modem, for Be's service.

For any service that runs upto 8mbit (bulldog or ukonline or f2s then a standard ADSL modem / router will be fine.

Line stats from modem?

Can see if there is a problem or line syncing at the wrong speed.

Look out for a update to the service at west one.

Think the top package is going up to 20 mb's per second but not sure about the current 8mb suspect will be 10 meg :)

no more cost i dont think.....

It's quite a good connection, the 8meg, but the downtime annoys me... Do you get that at all Superted666?

hmm sometimes yes and sometimes no, im on the 8 meg at the moment and ive only noticed dowtime a few times mainly sundays :)

Support seem to be quite good though. I noticed you said before you thought it should be static IP but IMO i think its only the top service that offers that but i maybe wrong (i am often so why not now :D)

Most annoying thing for me is that silly 'connecting to ask4' thing that comes up as a webpage if u dont use it for ages :(

i spoke to them about it a while ago and you they can lock down the address of your router to hard authenticate this should help your other half with his gaming issues :D

Phew what a rant!

I'm with them in Jet Centro, and I have to say I haven't had any major problems.

There's been the odd outage, but when taken in comparison to the shower that BT are and the fact it costs £150 before you get any service with them I think theyre rather good.

My mates have had more downtime on their ADSL connections, and to be quite honest, when theirs do work, the contention is abysmal.

For uncapped 8MB I'm than happy seen as with the other 8MB+ providers (eg UK-Online, and Be), it can take over a month to get connected if at all and their call support lines often queue over an hour apparently....

Cheers Ask4!

Ask4 have kitted buildings like West One out with fiber, so they provide high speed connections just to them.

While Bulldog and Easynet both provide LLU up to 8 meg services in Sheffield, in my experience the line quality to most buildings is sub standard, even within half a mile of the exchange you'll le lucky to get 8mb. This is purely anecdotal, however.

Scutts you said that "Go with Telewest if you can - their 10MB service, coming online in the next few weeks, is £35/month."
Have you heard somthing as i keep checking the telewest site and still waiting for Sheffiles to make it onto their list of exchanges to be upgraded!!!

Ask4 are only available in certain city living developments so aren't an option for most people.

Telewest are upgrading Yorkshire last of all from what I've heard so it will be a while before we're on 10mbit afaik.

They do reckon they'll be up to 50mbit (possibly even 100mbit) by 2007 though when they upgrade to DOCSIS 3 or use Ethernet :D

I'll believe that when I see it.....but I doubt it'll be by 2007 !

I jumped into bed with Bulldog Broadband and now I have a 4meg connection speed...well most of the time anyway, my line is victim to the odd drop out at night time but from what i've read on this thread that seems to be the norm.
