Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to get a place on Sheffield Uni's Law degree course next year but desperately need some voluntary work, to set me apart from other people.

I'm a mature student and will be going into a degree via an access course, so am kind of at a disadvantaged start anyway. However, I want to try and get in some relevant experience before the applications have to be sent later this year.

I'm really hoping that someone can give me some valuable advice on where I can start etc, or even offer me an opportunity :D. I would SO love to be able to shadow someone in the legal profession and am more than willing to be a general dogsbody in return (sounds naff I know, but we all start somewhere don't we?)

Any advice would be appreciated! :D

Kiveton Park Independent Advice Centre requires volunteers so you could offer your help there. They train you up ad an advisor, and they offer a free legal service session where a volunteer solicitor provides a couple of hours free service once a week. I doubt you could shadow what is a confidential service but you could maybe pick up some tips, but the advisory work i'm sure would stand oyu in good stead. Worth an enquiry at least. It's not Law as such, but the advice-giving part itself is experience and not something that comes easy to everyone.

That's a great idea, thanks. I'll look into it asap :D

Just in case that doesn't come off, you could also try the following:

Community Legal Advice Centres South Yorkshire are an umbrella body for advice centres across the region, with lots in Sheffield, and they offer a lot of volunteering

Also Sheffield Mental Health Citizens Advice Bureau Limited in Nether Edge - manager.smhcab@cabnet.org.uk

Finally, do a search on www.do-it.org - choose 'advice work' as an option and enter your postcode and it will bring up a variety of volunteering opportunities near you.

Good luck!

If you can commit about 6 months, Citizens Advice Bureau.

Write to high street solicitors with a CV, its not too difficult to get a week's work shadowing.

If you want any more advice, pm me (just finished studying)
