View Full Version : Michael Vaughan Square

As we have a current sheffield hero. Michael Vaughan, who has captained his England team to win the world's greatest cricket competition The Ashes.

No doubt before long he will be given the freedom of the city, and mentioned alongside other sporting and well known legends from sheffield. Like Palin, Cocker, Cocker, Sharman etc..

Is it too early to name a square in the town centre redevelopments after him, or should we wait until he retires from cricket in 10 or 15 years time ?

I think it's a bit too early.

HOWEVER, what happened to the Sheffield Legends plaques that they were planning?

ALSO - Millennium Square name is about 5 years out of date - that square needs a better name.

Far, far far too early, and by that I don't just mean wait until he retires.

Let him win a few more things first - he's only just started. If he proves himself to be a great England Captain then maybe, but it's only a single competition in a team game.

We should be doing Seb Coe before Micheal Vaughn.

I'm not undermining what he's done in the slightest, but you can't just go giving awards at the drop of a hat - that's for the politicians!

I am only following the lead from Tescos who are now stocking mince pies.

Anyone remember Justin Rose? He was a national hero a few years ago, but he's not really done anything since and nobody remembers him now.

Not seen anything about them for a while, but I thiought they were reserved for people who were born in Sheffield, Vaughn is an adopted Sheffielder and moved from Manchester when he was 3, he was educated in Sheffield and was taught his cricket here so I think we can let him have a plaque for that :D

Before all these sportspersons and what-nots get things named after them , what about the true heroes of Sheffield ,those who people will remember in a 1000 years time ?
How about Blunket Boulevard or Betts By-Pass ?
And if we could dig up the name of the geezer who first thought up the Student Games for Sheffield , we could name something after him too . Any good suggestions ?

They're still happening. The council have, I gather, had trouble contacting the 10 people selected for this year's plaques. We can expect something soon though, and then there'll be individual dedication ceremonies with the people concerned. As for being born in Sheffield, apparently...

"You have to be either born in Sheffield or have a very strong association with the city and must have achieved recognition at a national or preferably international level..."

So that would rule Vaughany, and Seb Coe in.

Do we know who they are? I assume, if the council have been contacting them, that they are all still alive? (unless that's why they've had trouble :suspect: )

I think its safe to assume Seb is in the list, as well as Gordon Banks - but there's been no official announcement yet.

There already is a Betts By-Pass.

It's commonly known as Butt Hole Lane.

One can never tell with our beloved council - though I think they were waiting for all 10 to get back to them before they announced so maybe there are some that have passed on in the list and they're just waiting for the live ones to reply!

Ousetones.

Well , that's certainly a good idea but I can't recall a Butt Hole Lane . Is it near the Paternoster Row -Brown Street area ?
I do recall a Button Lane and there is a Button Hill but why should we lose our little Buttons for Clive Betts ' convenience ? Or even in Clive betts ' convenience ?
And how about a statue [or something ] to Jan Wilson , where Queen Victoria 's one used to be , at the Moorhead ?
The cost should not be considered------it's the honour of Sheffield that's at stake and that is beyond price or even Council Tax .

A fascinating idea.

One that would see me wishing to be the pigeon instead of the statue.

As regards Butt Hole Lane, I think there was a thread on here some time ago about this address. If I could be bothered, I'd do a search, but well, suffice to say, I can't be arsed to look up Butt Holes!

All this disagreement !!

Look , we must erect something to encourage Sheffield to regain its self respect .
How about a statue of Charley Peace shooting somebody in High Street or the 'Duke of Darnall ' holding up the traffic in The Wicker ?
Or we could have one of the , 'Unknown Counsellor ' , chatting , tete -a tete with a chav . Or , 'The Running Mugger ' , somewhere near the City Centre ?
Surely there are no shortage of images to give us a picture of the , "real "Sheffield ?
Come on , where should these erections be ?

I would dearly love to see a statue (or even one of those brick things like the Steelman) of the Duke of Darnall, and also "clipboard man and dwarf". I never saw them in real life, so it would be truly spesh to meet them now. Clippie and dwarf at the top of Fargate, the Duke at the bottom.

Weren't we supposed to have some statue or 'piece of art' at the top of Fargate?

As the National City of Sport (okay, pinch of salt and all that) a sporting hero or legend seems more suitable than some statue to some former or living councillor (which would naturally get defaced, one instance where I might have a chuckle at THCAyle's 'art').

Seb Coe or Michael Vaughan would be great but for one great problem: Neither of them were born in Sheffield. Derek Dooley is a much more suitable person having served both city's football clubs.

I've heard on the news that Michael Vaughan is to get the Freedom of the City (whatever that means). That will do for him (probably being able to drive sheep over Lady's Bridge or maybe even being allowed to cycle up Fargate, who knows?).

So, a square or a statue to one of the city's famous sons or daughters. Leave politics out of it. Leave sport out of it. Music and culture? Don't much fancy Phil Oakey Square or a ten foot statue of whatsisname from Pulp.

That leaves industry - what Sheffield was built on.

Let's have Penknife Plaza (behind the Peace Gardens) and on Fargate a statue of a Stainless Steel soup ladel.

Smashing.

He used to live somewhere around Brocco Bank - used to be a semi-frequent sight in Hanrahan's IIRC.

I've also seen him in Mothercare and also, I was at the Christening of his daughter at Fulwood Christ Church earlier in the year.

Still, it's nice to have positive news about our city instead of it being the cheapest place to get heroin (or whatever).

No doubt, on the day Michael is presented with the keys to the city, Look Leeds will be running a feature on Ken Bates's favourite Indian Takeaway in Dewsbury.

I asked a man at the council and he replied:

The honour is purely a ceremonial honour, there are no particular privileges that go with it, such as the herding of sheep which Andrew Flintoff will be allowed to do in Preston. Freedom of the City is the highest award that can be given to an individual in recognition of their work and achievements, which is why Michael Vaughan has been given this particular honour. He will be presented with a gift at a formal civic dinner and reception in his honour, and his name and details will be added to the Roll of Honorary Freemen.

Brilliant!!

When is an award not an award?

"Congratulations Mr Vaughan for your heroic endeavours with the England and Wales Cricket Team and for putting the city of Sheffield, where you were raised, educated and where you continue to live, firmly on the map.

"I present you with an empty box, namely 'The Freedom of the City of Sheffield. What does that entitle you to? Er...,

"Fancy a free ride on the tram and a cuppa in Ha!Ha! Bar - on me?"

Well, the ashes is a little urn that they are not allowed to hold or touch and is kept in a museum, containing the burned remains of who knows what. They even made an imitation one for Vaughany to raise at the Oval, and gave them a big crystal one too to wag around in the photos. Although it is seen by us Poms and the Aussies as a priceless prize, it's totally useless in reality.

In fact it's original aim was to represent the "Death of cricket" when the English lost to the Aussies. It represents "shame!" so now we have it, in theory we ought to smash it up.
Although we would lose one of the greatest competitions...

It's a game. One side wins and the other loses. What a load of fuss about nothing. Giving people the freedom of the city for winning a game of "bat and ball" is ridiculous. They should have to achieve great things over many years or be real hero's in the sense that that have saved a number of lives or something similar.

Sheffield Celebrates Michael Vaughan - Wednesday 21st September

The people of Sheffield will get their own opportunity to congratulate victorious Ashes winning captain Michael Vaughan when he appears on the Town Hall balcony this Wednesday, 21st September. He will be greeted in the Town Hall by the Lord Mayor, Leader of the Council, and other wellwishers before his balcony appearance from 6.15pm, where he will address the crowd.

In order to allow the public to gather outside the Town Hall Pinstone Street, Surrey Street, and Leopold Street will be closed from 5.45pm on Wednesday, which may affect some people’s journey home that evening. Buses will be re-routed from that time until the end of the event. Information on re-routed buses will be placed at bus stops over the next couple of days.

I think that the Freedom of the City, should entitle Vaughany to re convert bramhall lane to a cricket ground again, so he can go down and have a net whenever he likes, or trundle some of his surprisingly effective slow bowls at a proper cricket ground.
