View Full Version : How do you go about getting an office based job?
Hi there,
i am a law graduate, and ideally i wanted to work within the legal sector as any role as i know how competitive it is. i have applied to lots of jobs as juniors, admin, secretarial etc, however with no luck. i was advised that i should go for office work and build my experience from there, as i have no office experience however, lots of catering experience. this i have done, but still with no luck yet as alot of these jobs require so many years experience, but i dont understand how i get these years of experience without being given the chance in the first place? i am so frustrated as i am trying really hard to launch my career as i am due to do my LPC this september. i have been applying for all jobs i can daily with no luck. can any one give me any advice please? I would really appreciate it.
Hi, have you tried agency work? My sis-in-law used to work as a secetery in a solicitors through an agency, think it was Kelly services!?!
Good luck!
Your qualifications might actually put people off, they might think you'll leave as soon as something better turns up.
Temp work would get around this as they only need someone for a limited time, and would help you get experience, references and contacts. There are quite a few agencies in the city centre so I would spend an afternoon visiting them all.

You have my sympathy; my own nephew graduated last year too. You have both entered the job market at exactly the wrong time...over supply of law firms in a declining market (the boom in law firms has been on the back of the massive expansion of public sector spending, which of course is about to shrink back)
Currently he is working in a call centre and doing pub work to raise the money to pay for his own articles training.
Although you lack experience, remember you are trained to be organised and understand the need for attention to detail (try and avoid using i in written material...it undermines the attention to detail argument :))
In the interim; have you given any thought of doing voluntary work for Citizen Advice Bureau or law firms specialising in good causes/political issues? It will get you some useful work experience and keep you in the loop regarding law.
Good luck.
The very best of luck to you
Wait until you've done your LPC and then find yourself a training contract.
Training contracts can be like gold dust!
You could also try to get an unpaid work experience placement for a few weeks in a solicitors, barristers, specialist law practitioners, etc. Even a few days here and there will boost your CV. Write to all the local firms and enclose a well-written covering letter with your CV. Get someone to check your application for errors before it goes out.
If you are emailing them, make sure the email is as well-presented as a written letter - pay attention to grammar, spelling, and include all relevant details. You'd be amazed at how many people apply for jobs via email without spell-checking or in bloody text-speak.
