They exist.
I saw a house that put a hand written sign up saying scrap metal to be shifted. (An old garage that he didn't want the bother of taking to the tip.
One day later a van stopped, took it away and gave him some pin money as well!

There are lots around the ecclesall/bents green area. they drive around all day looking in skips for anything worth taking. We see them quite regularly. They look more like scallys though to me, rather than the old fashioned type scrappy.

Funnily enough someone came round yesterday (in Walkley) asking for scrap steel, then today a different bloke came round.

"Rag & Bone" man was round our way (Warren/Chapltown) on Tuesday. Horse and Cart replaced by a flatback van, but they still shouted as they drove slowly down the street..

I miss the old "rag and bone man" giving out balloons for a couple of bags of jumble!

He's been replaced by a couple of blokes in a pick up helping themselves to any old iron that's not fixed down. In fact, even if it is fixed it's still taken - hence the great holes in the side of the road where grates have been dug up with not even a chuffin balloon left as a thank you!

Is there a number to phone to get someone to call round?

Actually, on Hill Street next door to the Sheldon pub just off London Road. There is a real rag and bone man, horse and cart, the works. He does not use the horse and cart much now as he says there is too much traffic on the roads.

They are scallys too. I live in that area and saw two of these guys pinch a sledgehammer off the back of my truck. I got dressed and motored around looking for them, to no avail :(

They can be seen driving a red and white truck.

They were sold to the glue factories.

If times were hard and the kids were hungry, we would just lop off mother's lower leg and the Rag n' Bone Man would give us three farthings for it.

But we were 'appy!:D

I was thankful for the scrappies to drive past my house this morning and ask if I wanted "that washer scrapping, love?" - said they were welcome to it, thank you. Been waiting two weeks already...
