View Full Version : Benylin Cough Syrup- can you take too much?
Just pondering really, because I've got a vicious chesty cough at the minute- it says on the bottle that you should only take upto 4-5 2x spoonfulls in 24 hours.
What would happen if I took more than that?
Would I turn into a drug crazed skiprat of some sort :) ?
Cheers
cgksheff 14-09-2005, 09:36 Important information about some of the ingredients in Benylin Chesty Coughs (Original)
This product contains glycerol, which can cause headaches and may also upset the stomach when taken in large doses. It is important not to take more than the recommended dose.
It also contains sodium benzoate, which may irritate the skin, eyes and mucosal surfaces.
This product contains1g of sucrose, and 3.49g of liquid glucose in each 5ml
This product contains 5 vol % of ethanol (alcohol) and may be harmful if you have liver disease, alcoholism, epilepsy, brain injury or brain disease. It may also modify or increase the effect of other medicines.
This product contains the colouring ponceau 4R, which may cause allergic type reaction including asthma. These reactions are more common in people who are allergic to aspirin.
A few extra doses over 2 days shouldn't do you too much harm, but I would avoid continued use.
Cheers for that!
I took about 6 doses yesterday, and I've already had two today so I think I should slow down a bit then definitely looking at what you have told me.
Thanks again
My grandad takes it every morning as he has terrible 'chest' problems.. I don't think you should be taking more than the dose amounts written on the box.. if it's that bad then go to your doctors. I have suffered all my life from bad chesty (prefer that word to productive..) coughs and I know loads of tricks of the trade so to speak for getting better quicker without the doctor if you don't like taking antibiotics, just PM me!

Thanks for the reply- can you recommend me any tricks of the trade I could use to clear my 'chesty' a bit quicker by chance?
Thanks again.
bigredbox 14-09-2005, 10:30 There's some cough mixture in our local shop, called simple bronchial syrup....this is ace but must confess when this happened to me I was drinking the whole bottle.
It stopped me coughing alright, it had alcohol in it and I think I was too comatosed to cough...lol
Good stuff and very cheap, but DON'T drive!

Cures my cough and gets me pished at the same time!
Sounds my kinda poison that :)
When I was a kid, my mum gave me a bottle to take to school with a note for the teacher. I was supposed to only have a dose at lunchtime, but I didn't give it to my teacher and throughout the day, drank the whole bottle!!! I liked the flavour!
It was the drowsy one, and when I got home, I slept for hours! No other effects, but I was lucky, you shouldn't have that much in one day!!!
Needless to say, my mum didn't trust me to take medication to school. She had to take it to the teacher herself.
absynthfairy 14-09-2005, 12:29 Wasn't there a celebrity not long back who was addicted to cough syrup? I'm thinking Jack Osbourne I think (like he needed to be addicted to anything else...) - will have to check my back issues of Heat magazine...
littleboo 14-09-2005, 12:36 Go grab yourself some night nurse, it knocks you out but by the next day I'm usually better....tastes vile though:gag:
Dont take it with Benylin or any other medicine with paracetamol in them!!!!:shakes: :shakes:

.......anything about a drug called clozapine,I've never heard of it can you give me any information.
An anti-psychotic mainly used for treating schizophrenic illnesses marketed under the name Chlozaril.
It is a drug of "last resort" after other treatments have failed, because it has a serious side effect of causing a blood disorder - agranulocytosis.
Why do you ask?
Applegrim 14-09-2005, 19:09 Thank you so much. Apple.
I normally get corvonia kicks like a mule but works in no time:D
