View Full Version : Ground Tremors in S13
seanyboy 13-09-2005, 10:12 For a while now we've experienced what I can only describe as 'tremors' in the S13 area. Basically, at certain times in the day there are large rumbles lasting only a couple of seconds, but strong enough to shake our house (and its contents!)
We've been told that its probably from nearby Orgreave - where workers are 'blasting' underground (possibly with explosives) and now they've become more frequent and stronger.
What I'd like to know is if anyone else has experienced this?
Mantaspook 13-09-2005, 10:29 When I lived there we could often hear the regular thump of a forge hammer at around 5AM - this hammer was tracked down to Attercliffe - I was impressed that the sound travelled so far through the ground.
There are a lot of mine workings in that area (ie: Pit Lane near Woodthorpe) so you may be experiencing subsidence, judging by the state of the road from the Parkway to Woodhouse which is rippling with subsidence the area may be more dynamic than we think.
Can't you phone Orgreave and ask them if they were blasting on the day you experienced the tremors?
cgksheff 13-09-2005, 10:31 Sounds like Owdlad dropped his wallet again!:D
bigredbox 13-09-2005, 10:36 I used to live on Orgreave Lane, a few years ago tho, never felt anything then. Is this a recent thing?
It's probably what you suggested but was'nt it just a coking plant? Did'nt think there where underground workings still in use?
Property survey said there was no danger of subsidence.
Only thing did have probs with was little black flys at a certain time of year, from the farmers field opposite.
I'd be bloody worried! Heard once that all the mines were conected out that way...like it was possible to walk from maltby to barnsley and orgreave all underground.
bigredbox 13-09-2005, 10:44 I second that manta, re the forgemasters hammer! we can hear it regularly at shiregreen.
God I missed that sound, it once lulled us to sleep at night.
I would def get onto the mining company in question and start giving rice. If I still owned the property on there I'd be asking for compo.
RJB owned it last time I heard but thats poss changed now?
Mind you, how many mines were once out there? Birley had 3 pit heads, then Beighton had god knows how many.

Indeed, I often remarked to my wife that a bit of regular banging in the bedroom helps you sleep better. ;-)
bigredbox 13-09-2005, 11:24 :hihi:
Even when it means the walls caving in and the house falling down?
Mantaspook 13-09-2005, 11:31 Crikey -You heard about that then? We told the neighbours it was a gas explosion.
A lot of building work is going on near the bridge just down from Orgreave Lane? Is that where you mean?

Where abouts in S13 ? as its quite a big area and what time are these certain times when these events happen, were in S13 and I've never heard or felt anything

Its around the Ironbridge area, and the rumbles happen during the day lately they've been at 10am, 11am, and 3pm.
bigredbox 13-09-2005, 19:06 Lol, can feel an investigation coming on, will sit in car and wait for earth to move.....then go and have serious words with the workmen down there:hihi:
Is it where old hall used to be or bridge nr undertakers and old sewage farm?
bigredbox 13-09-2005, 19:25 Well if you see a sussy lass down here, with her ear to the ground and a**** in the air...DONT worry or report me as an escaped looney. It's only firefoxbigredbox investigation into the paranormal and extremely suspect underground siezemic activity. Like what happened to Orgreave hall anyway, was it spirited away cos it disappeared very quickly. STRANGE and so am I...I admit it folks.
If it's near Ironbridge, is it anything to do with railway workings?
I'm sure I heard a ballast cleaner or something going the other night
Then there's whatever reason they have for having half of the old A57 full of holes just now....
bigredbox 13-09-2005, 20:25 It's just occured to me, would there be a little landrover parked on the field with what looks like oil drilling equipment?
They do this testing, sending shock waves into the ground.
It's to do with checking for underground voids etc prior to building new roads, housing estates.
Saw one of these thingy's nr mossway once and just had to be nosey and ask.
Typical woman:hihi: nosey cow, but I lived and learned.

Nice theory but I doubt it because its been going on for about a year now, and the fact it happens a few times a day (only on weekdays btw when less people notice)
seanyboy 13-09-2005, 21:28 We've been in touch with the local MP and a letter came back this morning from Clive Betts (or at least his secretary) basically saying he will get back to us. Maybe.
Hello_Nikki 13-09-2005, 21:33 Yes, finally someone else has felt them too! Just today there have been about 4/5 of them. Really strong as well - you can hear things rattling & see my pc wobbling! I'm on Hail Mary Drive just near iron bridge, and it can be a bit scary sometimes!

Yay! I'm not the only one!
I get a lot of the same things - pc wobbling, my desk rattling, and even my whole bed shaking.
Iv felt them too!
A dull thud then things rattle, my ex lives at bottom of Badger estate, house backs onto field that leads across to Iron bridge.
btw the "forgemasters" hammer isnt forgemasters, it belongs to aurora, on the same site tho, the bloody thing keeps me awake when im on nights there!! If you put a glass of water on a table it ripples when the hammer goes.... jurassic park style!
thetorch 14-09-2005, 00:43 my mum lives in S13 hope it doesn't get too bad. Worried even more now as I've been the last one to leave home... :suspect:
Orgeave is completely open cast. Theres nothing "underground" as such. Its simply a HUGE hole in the ground.
That said, there well may be some basting going on. Especialy if you only feel it during "working" hours.

I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere ;)
bigredbox 14-09-2005, 08:42 Wow,
This seems much more widespread than just ironbridge, it has to be something really deep underground and massive to have such shockwaves.
Only theory could be they are collapsing some of the tunnels of the old orgreave pit?
Still it's awful and irresponsible for those who are doing this not to just leaflet the effected area, just to let folks know what's going off.

It is worrying because who knows what kind of damage its doing to the houses in this area. Constant shaking of the foundations & brickwork can only be making the houses weaker. You can see plenty of little cracks all over the brickwork and pavement.
bigredbox 14-09-2005, 19:00 Ho hummmmm, DO YA KNOW WHAT IT IS YET?????
LOL...glad I moved out when I did, if my ex still lives there it could'nt have happened to a nicer bloke....well THAT particular house anyway :suspect:
What this is going to do to house prices is dire, best all move out while the goings good, either that or find out who the hell is responsible and claim mega compo.

I'm still waiting for your Paranormal Investigation! lol
bigredbox 14-09-2005, 19:09 The ghosts of Orgreave past! do you notice a strange green misty glow in the area at the time? LOL
Not funny tho, will be doing no end of damage to properties all over that area, especially if you've noticed cracks everywhere.
Could you get UNI involved to investigate these tremours?
Someone somewhere has the key and knows whats going off, but WHO????

I do notice this, its usually accompanied by a strange smell (anyone who lives near Orgreave will know what I mean) :hihi:

Not a chance.
If Owdlad drops owt (Apart from his guts) He would be down that fast, it would hit him on the back of his neck. :hihi:

Lol - I like that Viking, I'll have to remember that one!
seanyboy 03-11-2005, 14:27 OK we have an update - some scientific people came round to measure these tremors, and would you believe it that was the only day they didnt happen. They do however know about these ground tremors / underground blasting and have said they will stop around Christmas.
Hopefully Woodhouse won't have crumbled in that time.
