I'm considering moving to Barnsley to be closer to work for a job I'm about to accept ... but so far I've heard mixed reports. Surely it can't be as bad as I have heard ... things must have moved on from the times of flat caps and whippets???!!! Can anyone tell me what the area is really like and what places around the town centre I should avoid? Are there any new apartments or housing developments ... but in decent areas? What about surrounding villages? What are rental prices like?

Any honest advice much appreciated!!

I was brought up in Wombwell and some of my family still live in Darfield.
I have to admit there is a certain lack of sophistication about Barnsley that would drive me nuts if I lived there after being in Sheffield for so long.
But... I also have to admit that things are improving.
There is still a thriving market and let's face it, it's cheap. Nightlife is boisterous bordering on the rough, but outside the town centre there are country pubs and places to eat that rival anything in Sheffield.
The villages outside Barnsley range from expensive and exclusive (Cawthorne, Stainborough etc) to wretched and wasted (Athersley, Cundy Cross etc), with most other places in between.
There is new building everywhere as property developers are cashing in on the M1/A1 corridor thing, and the sheer cheapness of land.
I think these places will improve as new people move in and shake the locals up a bit (God knows some of them need it!), so don't listen to all the putdowns on here. Truth is, Sheffielders can't laugh at themselves the way we Barnsley folk can, and so they take themselves far too seriously. Barnsley people win all the way with me!!

Barratts building a new estate at Millhouse Green, Penistone. I've hopefully attached the link but if it doesn't work the development is called The Pastures. I can't find any prices but I'm guessing they will be more affordable than Sheffield. http://www.smartnewhomes.com/development/The_Pastures/517879/1000190/gallery.aspx

Hi Jo,

My only advice would be to check insurance premiums in the postcode you're looking at. Darfield was quite badly affected during the flooding earlier in the year. House sales around there have slowed down considerably since.

We're currently just outside Sheffield city centre but are moving to Penistone soon. Penistone seems a really nice place. It's still a market village and surrounded by countryside but has a train station, small cinema, some shops, pubs, restaurants etc. We're looking forward to the move and to getting out of busy city life to somewhere that's surrounded by green areas but still got some life to it.

Other advantages to coming under Barnsley council rather than Sheffield council include cheaper council tax and more recycling collections.

The small amount you save in council tax - about £1.50 per week on a band C property - will be wiped out in the extra you'll need for heating bills. Went to school in Penistone and in winter the wind varied between Siberian and brass monkeys.

hey,
ive just accepted a new design job in barnsley, currently commuting from leicester so a move is on the cards. Having asked around on a few forums ive been swayed to sheffield, as its still a manageable 20mins in the morning, and a little more 'on the pulse' in terms of nocternal activity.
