Hi, I recently get a job from Uni. of Sheffield and will work at Northern General Hospital in May 04. My wife and I will move from Hong Kong to Sheffield (a very long way). We would like to rent a house around the hospital. I hope to know which area around is good and safe to live? I read from the forum and found Hillsborough. Any other suggestions?

Besides, we would like to bring a cat with us as we cannot leave her. Is it very difficult to rent a house to allow cats/pets? Anyone has idea on this?

Being Chinese, we would also like to see whether there is any Chinese using this forum and live in Sheffield. Hope to establish some contact before we come. Is there any Chinese groceries/supermarket in Sheffield and where do the Chinese community live in Sheffield, as I know there is no China town in Sheffield.

Cheers.

There is no china town as you say, however the Chinese community does have a notable presence in the London Road area, which is close to the city centre. Here you will find a variety of chinese run businesses such as specialist grocers and restaurants, and there is a chinese community centre located there too.

However I'm not sure it is the greatest area to be living, so I would look at the suburbs. London Road is the main road into town from parts of the South West of the city, so if you live somewhere such as Woodseats, Totley, Bradway, Nether Edge, Norton, Greenhill, Beauchief or Abbeydale you will have easy access to the London Road facilities.

u can also go yam-cha at a chinese restaurant called zing-vaa located in the city centre! but i think they only do dim-sum on sundays and mondays! but the choice is limited. if u want alot more variety and quality dim-sum, u can go to doncaster, by train or car! also, a little further away, theres manchester! theres a china town (the 2nd or 3rd largest in uk?) with many shops and restaurants!

oh yeah! on london road, u can rent tvb dramas! i never been, but saw the signs outside the shop! >___<

Most private houses for rent will allow cats as pets, this is not a problem. Have you checked out the quarantine laws for your cat.

Keeping a pet in quarantine for 6 months can be VERY expensive, and I do not think that Hong Kong is a member of the "pet passport" scheme, but you would need to check that out.

In the area you are going to be working in, it is mainly Indian / Pakistani / Kashmiri / Bangladeshi communities, not Chinese as far as I know, but there are many good properties to rent in Wincobank (lower end near meadowhall) and that surrounding area.

Can you drive? as this will affect where you can look for a house!.

I'd get in touch with a local estate agent, which you should be able to do via email. They'll be able to give you some ideas of areas and prices. I hope you enjoy it over here when you come, I'm sure you will.
