View Full Version : T-mobile network coverage
steviewander 12-09-2005, 17:11 Hi,
Does anybody have a t-mobile phone in the Sheffield area, in particular, the Crookes area. T-mobile have some fantastic web offers at the moment and am planning to change from Orange.
I am a bit reluctant as some of my mates who aren't on Orange have problems getting reception in my house which is in Crookes at the Broomhill end.
Can anyone testify to how good T-mobile's coverage is around here and generally when you travel in the UK?
Cheers
Steve
LellyBee 12-09-2005, 17:33 I've had T-mobile for a couple of years and not really had any problems with the signal whether I lived here in Sheffield or in Preston.
The only time the signal did "lose a bar" on me was whenever I was goin thru some parts of Woodhead pass. No problems when I've used trains getting around though
I had problems with my T-Mobile signal, but I think it was because I live in a terraced house. It was fine down the road as my sisters!
No problem with Orange or O2
steviewander 12-09-2005, 17:53 Hmmm I live in a Terrace House, so that sounds like a problem.
Damn it was such a good special offer too and my current network, Orange, won't match it!
We are in a terrace in Walkley and my housemate does not have a problem with T-mobile. Go for it you always have your 7 days return policy
steviewander 12-09-2005, 19:07 7 days return policy? hmmm... must check that out.
That'll be just what I need! Cheers.
Up until last November I was on T-Mobile for 4 years. The reception has always been brilliant as have their customer service people.
They did start getting very costly for me though, my bills were £25 a month to start with but the nail in the coffin for me was my last T-Mobile bill which was £89... Ok, I went well over my free mins and texts but it would have still only have been £27 with O2 on the tarriff I'm on now - And I moved to O2 because T-Mobile didn't have the phone I wanted (SonyEricsson S700i)
T-Mobile and O2 also have excellent coverages abroad too from what I've experienced! When I was in Palma last year, it was like talking through a house phone when I was calling the UK!
I can say T-Mobile and O2 are evenly matched with the quality of service/reception and IMO are the 2 best mobile providers..
Vodafone are very poor (I have Voda for business) and so is the 3 network. I don't know anyone with Orange so I can't comment.

Thats if you order your service over the phone its called the "distance selling directive". If you get your deal from the shop I don't know if you would be covered by something similar. I will get my housemate to post she works for them.
steviewander 12-09-2005, 19:42 excellent, thanks danum.
And if anyone is interested the special offer that I'm looking at is on the following link:
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=weboffers_personal
*Half price line rental applies in months 1 to 9, months 16 to 18 and thereafter. You will lose eligibility for half price line rental if you upgrade your handset or otherwise renew your minimum term contract. Voicemail is free in the UK. You may lose eligibility for half price line rental if you move to another price plan.
** Providing your order is received and accepted before 7:30PM, we will normally deliver to your home address by Royal Mail special delivery before midday next day. Orders placed on Fridays are usually delivered on Saturdays, there are no Sunday deliveries.
***Free insurance applies for the first 2 months from the date of connection and is subject to acceptance of a 12 month policy with an independent third party. Terms and conditions apply
The way I read it, its half price for 9 months, then normal price for 7 months then half price for 2 months...
18 months contract and not being able to upgrade after 12 months without having to back-pay the line rental wouldn't be any good for me because I get bored of them and usually scratch them so I need one every 12 months! But if your not a clumsy sod like me, it sounds good! :hihi:
I know that O2 give you 20 days to return any phone for any reason and cancel the contract with no penalties.. even if its because you don't like the phone...
I think T-Mobile would match that if you mentioned it in-store!
What I've found is that you can play each network off each other and they fall over themselves throwing offers at you including free covers, free Bluetooth sets, free car chargers etc. and even a free shower radio!! (trust me, this is true)
Just had a look on The Link's website and their giving away half price line rental with T-Mobile for LIFE on there!

PIPER1978 13-09-2005, 17:58 I had tmobile phone and couldnt get a signal when downstairs in my house. Had to either run upstairs ( and signal not 100% then) or go outside. :(
I am on Orange now and no signal probs at all (touch wood) ! :D
My friend her hubby and 2 daughters were also on tmobile and had to go in their garden for signal :o They all now are on orange
alternageek 13-09-2005, 18:44 i had tmobile (when i was in the states) and when i was visiting the walkley area i had zero problems with reception.
i miss having them cause they are literally everywhere in the world so roaming is easy when you travel.
Hi
I'm Danum's housemate :)
We live in Walkley in a terraced house and I've never had a problem with coverage here. I can't say I've noticed any problems with it in Crookes (but then, I've not specifically checked for it..), I'll go up there tomorrow for you and check it out.
When you order over the phone or the net, you are legally covered by the DSR (Distance Selling Regulation). This means that you have 7 working days from receipt of the goods to change your mind and send it back. You don't have to give a reason, but the DSR return must be requested in writing (email, letter or fax) You get details of how to do this when you receive your phone.
If you buy a phone from a shop, you are not usually entitled to return it within 7 days; however, this is at the discretion of the individual store.
You can use this link to check out the coverage
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=ctl_change_state&name=searchResults&value=off&nextpageid=phones_cua_uc
Bear in mind that coverage can't be guaranteed, this can depend on structure of buildings as well as other stuff like terrain etc.
I'll post again when I've been up to Crookes :)
Hope this helps
Hiya,
I've been on T-mobile payg phone for about 5 years now , I live in Sheffield and haven't had any probs with signal here, or abroad. Other than on the Woodhead pass at the bottom.
The deal on the "link" site looks very good, I'm thinking I might have some of that, looks a nice phone too
deecee
steviewander 14-09-2005, 22:44 Thanks for your post Slinky. Let me know what kinda signal you get in Crookes (I live nr the Grindstone pub on Bute Street) ;)
I have heard stories of other networks (other than Orange) where it's difficult to get a signal on the ground floor and you have to run upstairs to get a decent signal. I don't want that to happen - else I'll stick with my current Orange contract.
The offer on thelink.com is better in that you get cashback on the months where you pay full price. However, I want the offer that is £16.50 a month for 300 anytime, anynetwork minutes and 100 text. thelink.com doesn't do that offer.
Fortunately, I'm not one to be chasing upgrade after upgrade and am quite content with a phone that works so long as I'm on a good deal :)
I spoke to t-mobile in store and they said that they didn't offer any initial period where you could return the phone for a refund. The only reason where they *might* accept a return is if you couldn't get any reception in your house. Hmmm....
simon4x4 15-09-2005, 16:14 Mobile network coverage can be patchy in sheffield how come? Does anyone think we need more transmitters?
yorkiepudd 15-09-2005, 18:19 Never had any problems in SHeffield on T-Mobile - a few black spots out in the countryside and in supermarkets, but other than that fine.
FYI I am now on BT Mobile (and was originally on a resold T-Mobile network) and when I upgraded this time I was switched over to the Vodaphone network "to improve coverage" - except I now get 1 bar less on my signal and it still doesn't work inside Morrisons.......
steviewander 15-09-2005, 19:09 Well I've gone and phoned t-mobile and ordered the contract from them. I get a 7 day no questions asked refund thing if I change my mind. Unlike buying it at the t-mobile store in town, they are legally bound to provide these 7 days because it is distance selling over the phone or internet.
So if it doesn't work inside my house or around Sheffield I'll cancel and go back to Orange :)
Oh and if anyone is interested in the offer, it ends on 30th Sept and I think they've just noticed a typing error in their adverts in the metro. Previously there was an offer of free 300 cross network, anytime minutes plus £100 text for just £16.50 a month. Today I spotted the Metro advert had changed the "300 minutes" to "200 minutes". Phoned them up though and they let me have the 300 minutes for the same price.
I just hope I get a signal in my house!!!
What phone have you ordered Stevie?
My last 3 are:
Nokia 7610 (Very good but difficult buttons and crap sound)
Motorola V3 Rzr (had 3, all went wrong within 2 weeks)
and now SonyEricsson S700i (Excellent but pretty bulky, well built)
Is it just me or do the next-gen mobiles feel rushed??? I was messing around with that new Nokia smart phone earlier and it felt like it would snap if I pressed the buttons too hard? (although knowing Nokia, it would withstand a bus running over it) :D
Hi Stevie
Sorry for the late reply!! Went up to Crookes this afternoon and drove the whole way through it. Signal was very variable; some places I got full signal, others I only got one bar. Even in the bits where I only got one bar though, I was still receiving text messages no problem. Text messages are given one of the lowest priorities (meaning in areas with poorer coverage, the network will try and make sure that at least voice calls can be received) so I wouldn't worry too much.
Having said that, you'll just have to suck it and see! :D
Hope everything is ok x
steviewander 15-09-2005, 22:34 Slinky - Thanks for your post. It is a tad worrying that you only got one bar in a few areas of Crookes, but I'll wait and see now that I know that I get 7 days free trial.
Space - I ordered the NOKIA 2630i which apparently is a new model that's recently been brought out. I asked to see it at the t-mobile shop and it does look v.good. I used to have Nokia phones and I have always liked their interface. I got a new contract with Orange but a Nokia wasn't available on the special deal.
I'm not surprised the Motorola V3 clunked out on you.
I'm currently stuck with the Motorola V220 which a ****e compared to my old Nokias. I've had the Motorola for nearly a year and still can't get on with it.
Come on, come on! I'm dying to know, can you get coverage in your house or not?? :)
God, I'm sad..... :D
flowerfairy 20-09-2005, 16:57 I have been with T mobile for 4 years and have no problems with them! The only time i loose singal is over the snake pass!
T-Mobile are OK if you live next door to their transmitter.
When living in S7, l had to leave my phone near the living room window just to get 1 bar. Could not get a signal anywhere else even in the backyard. Got fed up of missing calls and moved to O2. Any of the 3 big networks are the best for coverage i.e O2, Vodafone and Orange.
steviewander 20-09-2005, 18:34 Keep your hair on Slinky! ;)
I only just picked up my phone today - bloody Special Delivery wouldn't deliver to my work address and had to wait for my day off to get the phone.
Well, so far so good. There's 7 bars (maximum reception) on my NOKIA when I'm upstairs but it varies when I'm downstairs. It's usually hovering at about 3-5 bars, though i've seen it go down to just 1 bar for a few seconds before going back up. I'm not sure how useful these bars are as when I've been making calls, the clarity of the call seemed to be very good regardless of whether I was on 2 bars or 7 bars!
Anyway, I've taken it around Crookes to do my fruit and Veg shop and am happy to report that it's always maximum reception when I'm outside :) Hooray!
Thank god for that! I can sleep at night now ;)
