Hello!

Just wondered if any one had any advice about travelling around America, i.e. petrol prices, distance/time taken to cross East to West via car, motel prices, food prices, daily expenses.

Any advice is great. By the way, planning on going for the winter.

Thanks x

Just got back today, traveled from connecticut just down to Georgia for 10 days to visit, no sight seing, put around 1,900 miles on the car.

gas on an avargage was $2.89- $3.03 a gal.

best placesto stay are the Confort Inns, around $60-70 a nite, cheaper on weekends, includes 2 double beds in the room, easy to sleep 4, and good breakfast to eat in or take on the road with you.

bets place to stop for meals, look for "Cracker Barrel" bill boards, great food for on the road travelers....Cracker Barrel sampler $7.00, have nice country gift shops inside too.

Have fun,

I have stayed in a few best westerns also in the us and they are usually ok. For cheapish chain restaurants Dennies is quite nice, but you will have more fun trying non-chain restaurants!

thanks guys that's great! i'm just not too sure, do you reckon it's possibel to have a relaxed, unrushed trip E to W and back again in 2/3 months?

If you're going for 2/3 months, then EAst/West is wholly possible, including sightseeing in several places.

If you go for any shorter amount of time, you'll see how much you're missing out on, and spend all your time in a car/bus.

I was in the USA for a month and just stuck to 3 states, though travelled through more. (New York, Ohio, West Virginia, Michigan etc). I felt as though I'd had just enough time to accomplish about 1/3rd of the journey you seem to want to to (down the east coast followed by the old route 66 run).

Wait, I just read you want to come back again too! Not in 2 months, not relaxed and unrushed, you'd be in the car 90% of the days and just see things from a freeway or turnpike.

If you're going for 3 months, perhaps but I'd seriously consider and internal flight back to the East if you're wanting to end up in the same place, otherwise you're kidding yourself, the US is just way too big for that.

If there is one thing you must do, then that is Monument Valley. It is the most incredible sight I have ever seen in my whole life. Give New Mexico a miss. As a state it really has very little to offer, although Santa Fe is really beautiful.
Accomodation wise, Comfort Inn and Days Inn are the cheapest around. You can sometimes pick up mags and brochures which offer discounts at such places. The Best Westerns are cool too.

Yeah i've seen pictures of Monument Valley, definately on the list!!

Well the reason i wanted to do the round trip is because i want to see so many places! They're dotted around everywhere, up and down the country, what about a zig zag trip from East to West? : )

Maybe i need to sit down and think about the most important places to me!Great to hear I could do one way very easily though.

Thanks for all this advice! Any more must sees?

Hi Ren,

I'm also planning a trip for sometime next year! Would people reccomend hiring a car or a van? Each have pro's and con's I guess, I was thinking that I'd have more room in a van to do things, but do they take much more gas?

Some good replies on here :) I'm also in the same boat as you Ren, the places I want to see dont fall on a neat E-W line!
