Can you boot from a floppy drive? Sounds like it could well be the hard disk.
Should still boot from CD though if it's the hard drive that's failed.
Do the hard drive and CD drive show up in the BIOS? could possibly be an IDE problem?

Harddisk is registering in bios, Turned off all the quick boot funcionality and the harddisk is listed as 'good' so at least bios can regognise it a spin it up.
Really got me has this one... wonder if the cpu has overheated or something?

Just because the Bios sees the hard disk does not mean it's working, it just means the hard disk controller is working.

Go to www.seagate.com
and download the Seatools ISO image and burn to a CD. It allows you to check memory and drives.

It should, the installer should only use RAM, but when it boots up it does a thorough search of your system and installs relevant modules for essential hardware. It could either be one of them causing the problem or both of your memory modules.
