View Full Version : Does junk mail bother you ?
pattricia 11-09-2005, 12:41 My mail now consists of three quarters junk mail. Its a good job we have "Blue Bins" in Sheffield ,or I would be in trouble, with the amount I get. I cut an article out of the paper telling you about a Website, where you can apply to stop junk mail coming to your house. I havent accessed the site yet.I dont know exactly how it works, but has anybody applied for this yet ?
I used this website (http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/) but still get cross selling junk mail from my bank, insurance company etc
:roll eyes:
Kristian 11-09-2005, 12:51 Shiesh, there are seperate rules for companies you have an existing relationship with. Your bank or insurance company are allowed to mail you about updates or new products because there is a good chance you may be interested in what they have to say.
If you want to stop them mailing you, you need to contact them directly.
Hope this helps
K x
ummm I thought they would be  but whenever I apply for a new product I always tick the box at the bottom...you know the one that says do you want to know about other products from us or our parent companies etc etc - I always tick NO! but it's pointless as you still get it!!
I am also registered with telephone preference service...:D
Now all I need is a doorbell with options...:suspect:
press 1 for the kids
press 2 for the Mother
press 3 for the Father
press 4 if you are going to run away
press 5 if you are selling something/canvassing...
buttons 4 and 5 will give off very large electric shocks...:hihi:
I'm off to my inventions laboratory!! :P
I like junk mail.
It makes me feel as if I have friends, and I know when the postman's been.
SpiderPete 11-09-2005, 14:35 When I moved here there was 4 different people living here, and the junk mail was loads, best way to beat it, is to simply send it all back putting "no longer at this address" on the front and after a while they get sick of sending it.
I now get NO junk mail at all.

Berberis 11-09-2005, 16:54 Junk mail only annoys me when it’s that "to the homeowner" or "Delivered by hand by the Royal Mail" especially when that’s all you get through the door. I can understand the royal mail giving you extra stuff when delivering your mail but taking the effort to post this crap is just plain annoying!
I think its so annoying and pathetic. think of all the trees that could be saved if they stopped all this crap:loopy: :loopy: :loopy:
Don_Kiddick 11-09-2005, 17:54 If it arrives with my name & address on it I either shred it or write NO! NO! NO! allover the lot in marker pen, squish it back into the freepost envelope & post the lot back.
The anonnymous stuff "to the householder" I save 'till I've got a mountain then shove the lot back into the post box at the end of the street.
Zinger549 11-09-2005, 20:56 I dont get any mail appart from the odd letter
Nope, junk mail does not bother me at all..
It just goes to the shredder via the mail box ASAP :)
Junk mail by snail mail doesn't bother me... but in my e-mail account I get ******.

If you can get a Gmail account it has better spam filtering, I have a spare account going if you want one- PM me if you do.
It just knows whats spam and whats not- its wonderful :)
BoroughGal 11-09-2005, 21:48 If my mother gets one more letter from Telewest for me (considering I left there about 8 yrs ago), I will cancel my telly, broadband and phone line with them, I swear.
Despite ringing on about 20 occasions, and them swearing to me that they'd taken my mother off the list (and she's with the mailing preference service too) - they still continue to send stuff.

What a bloody good idea ... I will take great joy in posting all those pesky letters in the local post box.
It’s not the amount of them that gets my goat, but it seems the amount of junk mail and the lateness of the post service has gone hand in hand over the years. You used to be able open your post at the breakfast table, now you’re lucky if it arrives before lunch and when it does turn up its addressed "to the occupier" or similar! If the posties didn't have to deliver all this trash then our post service might be in better shape!

Or worse....Royal Mail is losing money as it is, and if they didn't get the income from delivering junk, I'm sure the price of stamps would rise again.
Hi - the link Shiesh posted for you is the mail preference service, I got on to this and it cut my junk mail down a good 70%.
However, whilst this should cut down on mail you get addressed to you by name - companies can still send out post addressed to "the householder" - but it is still worth registering. There is also a telephone preference service as well that will cut out cold calling.
Occasionally I receive interesting unsolicited mail, i.e, that addressed to other people. As for junk, I do as Don Kiddick recommends earlier; I rip it up and send it back to the source without a stamp, in the peevish hope that the company will have to pay postage. They probably don't in the majority of cases.
Frankly, I am more irritated by Spam emails. Practically every day I receive around five, and they invariably concern viagra. I never open them, as they are virus-infected. Last week I received one from a woman about 'penis enlargement'. I do wish my wife would stop taunting me like this.

Lol, Timo. I was about to say the same thing. Junk mail doesn'tbother me so much but spam emails drive me so crazy. I don't need a penis enlargement, being female and all. Nor do I want any of the crap I am frequently bombarded with.

Well, do you? :D
Yesterday in the post I received a letter offering money for a car loan...
I notice in the small print that "this information is also available in Braille".
Are there many blind drivers about, does anyone know?
the_newguy 16-11-2005, 09:58 yes:rant: it does my head in
Personally I detest junk mail. But they took the biscuit the other day. I received a credit card by post that I hadn't asked for, with a bank I don't use and never have used. I was furious. I cut it up and sent it back. I'm quite capable of asking for a credit card if I want one, I'm a big girl.
Just out of interest, what would have happened if I'd have moved, and someone else got a card with my name on it? Could they have used it? I know you have to ring a number to verify it, but surely that's a doddle to do these days.
yes it can be very frustrating at times... I have better things to do than going through the junk emails and post...
Agree - can't believe how long it takes to sort through it all to see if there's actually something important there. I especially hate the forms that come ready filled in with all sorts of personal details about me - feel I have to get rid of all those bits before putting the rest in the recycling box. Must admit that when we find something with a reply paid envelope we usually fill it with some other bit of junk mail and post it back to them - then it costs them money. If lots of us did this, maybe it would discourage them . . . or maybe not
mega_monty 16-11-2005, 22:27 I detest all the offensive mail from TV Licensing ..... an enforcement officer is due to visit your premises for the 1000th time this year in the mere hope we might find you receiving tv.
I Dont have a TV ! how many more times

Telephone Preference Service (http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/)
These (MPS and TPS) are industry bodies, rather than consumer protection bodies, so registering is useful, in that the good guys won't bother you, but beware of the baddies!
The most useful function is that if someone does ring to try and sell you something, you can just say "I'm registered with the TPS. Goodbye", rather than being polite and explaining why you don't want to buy what they're selling. Good salespeople will have already have started seducing you by then.
A good way of dealing with spam before you get it is Scanmail (http://www.kempston.net/smb/download.html)

Yeah, it's great :)
I had a little session of seeing how many of the leaflets and catalogues I could fit back into the freepost envelope one particular company had sent me, in the hopes they'll have to pay extra for the weight.
I also wrote "no thanks" on it. Pays to be polite :)

You should get a Gmail account - infact I'll send you a PM on it, old bean!

With their latest profits (April-Sept) being £159Million I beg to differ.
