Students are all that live there....there are no civilians...

But yes it's nice and safe.

Apart from the bottom end nearer to upperthorpe that can be a little iffy at times.. the student area at the top seems fine..

It's a great place to live (if you are at Sheffield Uni, bit far from Hallam). I used to live there and really enjoyed it. It's nice and close to the Uni. If you live on the side that backs over Goodwin you can also watch the girls play hockey on a Saturday morning over a few beers (or the boys play Football if you prefer)

It's safe but I wouldn't call it nice. I lived there for 2 years a couple of years back and while I was there it went downhill. There's always rubbish strewn around the street and the students don't care about their properties or the area so just mess up the houses and the streets.
The top end (nearer to Broomhill) is nicer but the houses are massive and there are less students up that end.
For another 5 minutes walk you're in Crookes which is much nicer and rent is way cheaper, and you don't have to use the gym because walking up the massive hill keeps you in shape!

Get contents insurance as well and ALWAYS lock front and back doors and many oportunist thiefs about as it's all students who live there. It's no worse than any other student area, just be aware.

I'd echo Sciencegirl to a degree. The top end is nice but the bottom end tests to be messy and have quite a bit of burgulary. you'd be better off up in Crookes
