I have just been offered a job as Deputy Bar Manager where I work. At the moment I am on £6 per hour. Anyone any idea what the going rate is for a Deputy Bar Manager?

Have you been offerd the job without them telling you the rate of pay? Or do you know what they are offering and want to compare?

No what's happened is I have been approached about the job and asked if I would be interested. Yes I am definitely interested but can imagine they will try and pay me as little as possible! I don't want the earth but it is a case of a fair days pay for a fair days work(or whatever saying is!). I was thinking about £8 ph but don't want to sell myself short

But it's for them to tell you what the rate is and then if you feel it's not worth it, negotiate. I'd say it's a bit odd to be asked if you are interested without telling you what's on offer re pay, hours, duties, etc. My son was a dep bar manager in a late bar/club, worked until 4am on weekends, did stock takes, supervised staff, banked the takings, opened up and closed up, and didn't get a lot for it. I guess for a 19-20yr old money wasn't that important and was fun while it lasted but it's not a forever job.

We were suppose to have had a meeting yesterday to talk about this, only trouble management didn't turn up! I understand it's up to them to tell me what the pay is but I wanted to do some research first to be able to negotiate if need be. I agree about the money and in my situation the money isn't everything but at the same time I don't want to be used.

Money might not be great but the title is good, great for your CV so even if pay is rubbish, take it anyway, do 6 months in a management role then look elsewhere offering better money.

utter rubbish, the title doesnt pay the bills for the next 6 months you want a decent weeks wage for a weeks hard work.

no it isn't utter rubbish at all - this job is more money than he's getting now so what do you think is already paying his bills? Anything more is now a bonus and not tkaing it means he is no worse off but definitely no better off.

This might not pay great, and it might, who knows? But even if it's not great, it carries weight if you consider what he can get as a result of taking this position. You have to see past the end of your wallet if you want a career path. Depends if you are looking far forward enough.

skyline, the problem with what you are saying is what defines a decent week's wage; ultimately it is what the business can afford. The fact is chocki must be paid an acceptable wage for the job he's doing at the moment, otherwise he'd work elsewhere.

What if the pay is not good enough and he turns the job down? He's actually worse off because he's had an opportunity, he turned it down so do you think he'd be asked again?

Chocki; Sandra is right, the CV value is worth more than the pay rise, take the job; if the pay is good, you'll stay there long term so everyone is a winner...if not you will move on and the employer will be the loser (finding reliable trustworthy people is not easy).

One piece of advice, if you do choose to leave and they, then, offer you more money...leave; if they were only prepared to pay you more once you threaten to go, that means they could have paid you more in the first place and would you want to continue to work for such an employer?

Whatever you do, the best of luck.

I think if you get £6 now, then at least £8 and tops maybe £9 is what you are likely to get, and £10 an hour would be a bit ambitious. My son got around £15k but he was just 19 even though the same was expected of him had he been 29!

Thanks everyone for your input. Like I said I just would like a fair days pay for a fair days work. I know I would be an asset as a Deputy Bar Manager, I know I could do the job and enjoy it. Like I said money isn't everything but we all have bills to pay. I enjoy working. We'll see what happens. I know I would be happy with £8

is it more money? the hourly rate has not been discussed they may want to pay the same rate for more responsibility, care workers on minimum wage or shelf stacking for a few pounds per hour more i know what i would do,i know its not all about the money but thats what we go to work for..job satisfaction, working conditions, unsociable hours is also important to consider

yes and it might help if the OP states what he wants from a job. If its just more money then he can still look for other jobs which do pay more than £6 an hour. If it's career progression money shouldnt be the key factor here. He's already paying his bills so now its about getting a bit more money WITH a chance to climb the ladder and eventually get even more money. There has to be a route you take to earning more money otherwise the OP will be stuck on 'just above NMW' forever. It's not every day are you handed a management position at work.

In Sheffield you would be lucky to get more than £15k for a position like this. Bar managers are £16-19k and GM £19-25k plus bonuses. Unless of course you were running Embrace or similar with turnover of millions, you would be lucky to exceed these amounts.

Sheffield compares quite poorly to Manchester and Leeds, but it also depends which bar it is. If it is a tied leasehold pub making 3 or 4 k a week or a busy west st bar making 20k a week. Clearly the latter will have more profit in which to play with.

My first job was for Relais and Chateau hotels and it paid £400 a month live in. For 45-50 hours a week. But I worked there for a year and got a job in the USA on 30k a year purely based on my experience at the previous excellent (if low paying) hotel.
