Here's an article on indoor herbs.

There are some good mail order seed companies around too.

Morrisons, asda sell ready grown in little pots, so do B&Q.
All you need then is an old pot sink, fill it with compost and put your herbs in. Supermarket ready grown herbs do tend to be a little pot bound & dry, so tease the roots give em a good drink and they should last years.
Hope this helps, fresh herbs taste a lot better than dried.

Gotta add, put the old pot sink outside in yard or garden, just by the kitchen door. Cover the compost with a little pea gravel £1.98 B&Q big bag(loads in) and the herb plants should be okay outdoors. May have to cover in winter to keep the frost off.

I've got Tyme, corriander, rosemary, parsley, mint, in the sinks & a bay bush in the garden, all perfectly fine.

I dont know anything about gardening...so I was wondering:

what is a "pot sink"? just a plastic pot?

what does tease the roots mean?

Cheers,

Pot sink? Old belfast type, usually taken out of very old houses made of white glazed pot. PM me I got one you can have.

An "expert" once told me the ready grown ones at supermarkets never re-sprout (think I may have just made that word up!). Where they lying? Mine all died after about a month, and I only ever got what was there when I bought it. However given the advice I got I didn't put much effort in!

There could be some truth in it - I doubt that ones sat on a supermarket shelf would have been particularly well cared for, but I bought mint, basil, coriander and parsley from Asda in little pots and they're currently taking over the garden!

Try this place, most of their herbs are grown out doors, also their advice is very good.

The Herb Garden Hall View Cottage, Hardstoft, Pilsley, Nr Chesterfield, Derbyshire Phone 01246 854 268

I know it's not in Sheffield, but is worth a trip to see it.

go to asda, they have all different herbs, ready grow, you just need to water them and pick them occasionly to size again, only about 52p a pot i think
