advancedwigs 30-05-2010, 01:46 Hi there,
I have just about finished building my website and am looking for some honest reviews please.
Please be gentle with me as i am no web designer, a wig designer maybe, but when it comes to computers i'll admit i'm a little slow lol
All comments much appriciated, thanks in advance
Emma :)
image-retail 30-05-2010, 06:54 HI hun, I use create for the same reason, I am no web desingner!
Looking at your site, in my opinion it looks too fussy, too many tabs and text and not enough images.
Also your slideshow isn't as clear as some of the slideshows you can use at create, I think you need better images and to use the beta slideshow options - go to create forum and ask to join beta testing for slideshow, there are loads of better options here.
I would also personally lose the google ads and links at the bottom of your home page and put them all in your links page.
You have a couple of seconds to grap you veiwer and at the min I think you arent grabbing them as well as you could. I personally would have a really good slide show of either a variety of wigs and then images of the stages of making them below which click through to the appropriate shop page or vice versa. Show off what you do on you home page through good images, because not everyone will read the text, you could always put it all in an 'about us' page?
You also need to look into you seo, you could use better title and meta tags and descriptions, although I am no expert! There are people on here and on create forum that can give you great advise on this stuff.
Anyway, good luck hun, I know it isn't as easy as it looks because I have had to learn it all from scratch. :)
steveroberts 30-05-2010, 07:33 I agree with all of the above...too fussy, menu system needs to be simpler (some of them could be sub headings on other pages).
Think about your target audience and work out what search terms they would likely use to find you and opitmise for that.
If you want a fast track way of learning SEO; buy SEO for Dummies
Good luck
anywebsite 30-05-2010, 10:42 Why are you advertising other wig shops through the google ads on your site?
indizine 30-05-2010, 10:48 Some people mistakenly believe they will make decent money from Google ads. A website needs a large volume of daily traffic to convert enough google ad clicks into to some sort of reasonable pin money. What they don't realise is for the couple of pound they might make, they will likely lose more in custom since it tends to cheapen a website. Google ads are fine on such as directories or informational sites but they shouldn't be added to your general business website.
anywebsite 30-05-2010, 11:10 You shouldn't have adverts for your competitors on your online shop. It's not only cheapening the website, it's advertising for direct competitors.
It's not just a general business website, indizine, it's a wig shop, trying to sell their own wigs online, while also advertising competing wig shops. Bizarre. It's even more important not to have ads for other company's products on your website when it's an online shop. You don't see 'Tesco (sponsored by Asda)' when you walk down a high street, it's the same online.
indizine 30-05-2010, 11:57 I said they shouldn't be added to a general website (ie anything selling a product or service) as opposed to a website that doesn't sell anything. Sorry for any confusion, it was just my interpretation of general.
But I agree, it's crazy to slap competing ads on any website selling the same thing.
em250283 30-05-2010, 16:29 Hi everyone, thanks for your comments.
I actually signed up to google adsense and specified that the ads be non related , obviously google have had other ideas! maybe i read it wrong, but it is no skin off my nose anyway to rmove them as i have not made anything from them anyway!
I have removed them now from my homepage.
Thanks for the advice about adding categories and sub categories, thats something i will def be spending some time on. There is so much information that needs to be there for customers who are looking for a wig because of medical hair loss, i differ from my competitors because i have been there and done that and my prices are affordable compared to others selling online.
As regards the seo, i dont seem to have a problem with that, people are finding me and im getting a substantial amount of enquiries and sales per day, the site has only been live just over 2 months so im pretty happy with that side of it for now.
I also have a lot of customers coming for consultations, this is not just a quick sale site that a customer can add the product to the shopping cart and pay, there is a lot of planning that needs to be done and customers need and want advice about what is best for them and their situation.
Although i am happy with my current situation as regards sales, enquiries, consultations etc.... i know there is always room for improvement, hence the request for reviews!
Thanks again for all your comments, its nice to get different points of view

ps - dont know why but i seem to have registered for this site twice?
indizine 30-05-2010, 16:36 Emma, you need to log in as the original user and re-post your last post in your original username then I will delete the post under the second user name after you have done that. You can't have usernames i'm afraid.

Emma, fantastic...just goes to show the power of the Internet; well done and the best of luck...remember SEO is a continuous activity as your competitors will be working to usurp you!
For someone who has not alot of exp I think it looks great. I am in the very first stage of setting up a web page and do not know where to start, I am 60 mind!!
I think pages have to be easy to navigate. Some major company pages arev so bad.

To get me into the web I bought a book called learn html in a weekend, the book assumed you stated reading it on a Friday night and took you through to Sunday, it even worked out when to take a break and, withing half an hour or so, it was spot on.
To be fair creating web pages has become much easier now and html is seen as a little passe by some developers!
For SEO, buy SEO for Dummies; it has become my bible for SEO (albeit the way Search Engines rank web pages is constantly being refined but the principles in the book remain the same)
60 is not a bad age to start learning; as we all know, the older we get, the more patient we become (this would make a few of my team laugh if they were reading this though :hihi:)
I am meeting up with a guy from the forum who can advise which way to go. I know what I want and perhaps willing to pay for this to be done. I did get in touch with BT who we have the broadband with, but very costly.
Thanks for your response.
YourStore 19-07-2010, 16:22 Hi there. What a like about your business is it has, potentially, a very powerful niche proposition. I think the blog is a good start but there's a huge opportunity for you to add a lot more advice and guidance content to the site, leveraging your extensive experience.
Start to build that up and you will enage more strongly with customers when they visit the site and you'll also start moving up the Google search rankings.
TheDaniel 26-07-2010, 13:19 I personally feel it's a good first try. Some of the images could do with cleaning up but I like it :-)
