View Full Version : Nice pubs in Hillsborough?
Hi
I live in Hillsborough since one week and want to know if there are good pubs in Hillsborough, specially on friday or saturday evening...
Florent
If yr into karaoke someone just post that travellers at hillsbro has a good one tonight:thumbsup:
I don' t like karaoke, I don't like singing at all...
U don't have to sing musicmad said there was some fantastic singers there u could just go listen drink & make friends then find out more about the area
What kind of pubs do you like? - One man's idea of a good pub is another's worst nightmare. For example, some people actually LIKE Legends...
Depends what you want out of pub I suppose. As far as I'm concerned there are no good pubs in the immediate area of Hillsborough corner!
A bit further out are places on the real ale 'circuit' like the New Barrack Tavern and Hillsborough Hotel.

Never been drinking round there I was flicking through topics when I saw one from musicmad thats why I asked :)
Caro1ine 09-09-2005, 16:01 Shakey and Masons are ok
I'm alone in Sheffield, I don't know people. So going to a pub where everybody is with friends, it is not easy for a foreigner (I'm french) to talk with...
For karaoke, if it is like in France (very bad songs), not for me. finally, if there is not bad music (indie, rock are a must), tv with sport channel, good beers, it will be perfect !
Caro1ine 09-09-2005, 16:05 well Shakeys got big screen n loadsa tellies n music is ok in there bt masons have got a juke box so you can play what you like
MusicMad 09-09-2005, 16:08 legends is not too nice a place. Shakey ....is ok, but the area is full of idiots at the weekend, keep well away from the old blue ball unless you are 15, or mindless. Masons was done out, but is a bit neither here nor there. none of the pubs there are ones you could spend the entire night in. Barrack Tavern is a nice quiet pub with a large selection of beers. Queens Ground is a good stop for one or two quick ones. Park Hotel is good, Gate is rough and druggy... Travellers is more my scene, friendly staff, friendly people, good music, nice drink, quite busy, but not so you are uncomfy, and it's my local!!!.
sorry for my ignorance, but in which street are they ? I live in Langsett road...
Jozafeen 09-09-2005, 16:21 If you live on Langsett Road then the Hillsborough Hotel is a really nice pub - real ale and decent price wine. There's no music of any sort though!
Best idea is to get yourself in town to places like The Nelson, Dove & Rainbow and Sportsman which are rock/alternative pubs or The Grapes which is indie.
MusicMad 09-09-2005, 16:22 Legends, Ball, Shakey, Masons, Queens Ground, Deepend, all on or around Hillsborough Corner. Park Hotel is off middlewood road at the top end of the park(!!) Travellers and Gate are at the bottom of halifax road, near the Law Bros petrol station and burger king. Barrack Tavern is on penistone road, bottom end of morrisons.
MusicMad 09-09-2005, 16:25 for rock, get into town, behind bankers draft is the dove and rainbow (tut n shive) also frog and parrot on div st is good.(no pun that ur french!!)

lol ! I hope so ;)
well I will see my mood. The interest of going near my home was because I don't need to use my car or to take tram (never did it). well I print this topic, I have a lot of names and adress :) thank you !
If you fancy somewhere a little quieter, head up my way - there's the Yew Tree and the Malin Bridge a few metres from the Malin Bridge tram stop.

I have to agree I think all the pubs in hillsboro' are lousy
BoroughGal 09-09-2005, 22:39 Yep, me too. And that's coming from a BoroughGal.
to be fair, they are both ****e.
like I say - One man's idea of a good pub is another's worst nightmare.
I like a pub where I can have a beer, a sit down and a chat without having to put up with couldn't-care-less bar staff, speakers blaring out rubbish at a touch over the human pain threshold and not have to fight my way to/from the bar/toilets. I generally avoid town if I want a beer ;-)
Freebird 10-09-2005, 12:00 Hillsborough Does Tend To Be A Bit Crap.Unless You're Looking For A Fight,Of Course.
It Might Be Worth A Wander Upto Walkley Though. There's Loads Of Good Pubs Up There. The Florist,The Palm,The Freedom,To Name A Few.Plus,There's Plenty More To Go At If You Don't Fancy Any Of Them.
And The Best Bit Is,It's All Downhill On Your Way Home.
Bonjour compatriote!
I too live in Hillsborough and have to say i never go out there, unless you count the new barracks tavern as part of Hillsborough. Try the pubs in Walkley, like royal hotel or in town i like fat cat, frog and parrot (music is usually good) or even the west end for afternoon pints.
I hope you'll enjoy as much as i do, i've been here 4 years now and people are great (well most of them..)!
Have fun!!
Salut

Finally I didn't go to Hillsborough pub. I must try in the center. I went to 2 concerts (The Misfits ans Reel big Fish, very good !) but not a good place to talk with people. I have some difficulties for going alone in pub, my english is not enough good for understing everything... well I know where is the frog and parrot (close to Jacks Records shop !), perhaps I'll try it one evening. Which day of the week is the best for going to pub alone?
MissGobby 14-09-2005, 15:58 I like the Deepend pub, (opp the hillsborough tram stop)... just DO NOT go in The Ball, its horrible, full of people wanting fights, people on drugs and is jsut a really horrible pub, i would aviod it if i was you.
deelightful3 14-09-2005, 16:59 a couple of weeks ago i went down hillborough one friday night with a few friends, after leaving the packed out shakey we went into the deepend where there were about 6 people in there,2 of us drank cider and we were informed that they had no cider wotsoever,so all 9 of us wallked straight back out again and went up to the queens ground, not exactley riveting in there but at least we could get the drinks we wanted.
The Queen's Ground is a good pub, properly run and staffed, with a nice old wooden interior and strange, but somehow comforting and cosy, orangey lighting. If it had a cask ale it would be excellent.
The other pubs in central Hillsborough are awful. Many people say this, yet they are still busy so maybe they won't change. The Deep End is OK for a swift 'un sometimes, and the live music room is good, but it could improve a lot. But it has possibly the shortest tram-door-to-bar distance of any pub in the world, which has got to be a good thing. The Barrack is good but a bit out of the way. Hillsborough Hotel is also nice but not in central Hillsborough either.
Nice pubs in hillsborough
Thats an oxymoron if I ever heard one.
There is a distinct lack of a decent pubs in hillsborough, depends what you're after really. Im not a fan of the crap lager you get nor the poor ventilation.
The hillsborough hotel's meant to be ok. I've yet to find it though...
matsalleh 18-09-2005, 10:48 My advice is avoid all Hillsborough pubs when Sheff Wednesday are playing at home.New Barrack is ok,real ales, sometimes have blues and folk nights.Queens Ground is fine if with friends and chatting.Crown near dog track has always seemed very clickey (sp?) to me.
45 years in Blue Ball tap room, but pick my times,no problems.
Magneteer 18-09-2005, 12:25 Try having a walk up to the Anvil on Stannington Road, good beers, and a good crowd. The landlord has bought himself a house in France and is doing his best to improve his language skills and a real French person would be ideal to practice on.
The Deep End has live music on fairly often.
The Hillsbrough Hotel and New Barracks Tav are great real ale pubs with mainly older clientele but are both really nice.
Shaekeys is pasable sometimes.
The rest AVOID like the plague.
Most people I know who live in Hillsbrough never go out there.
If you liike live music there are free gigs on Mondays in The Howard in town (opposite the train station)
The Showroom is also a very nuce chilled out bar (again opposite the traiin station) and is also a foreign/art-house cinema)
The Grapes and Boardwalk has lots of live music on.
gigs can be found here (http://www.ents24.com/web/whatson/music/sheffield.html?date=1127047571)
or feom www.soundaloud.com
we don't really have indie bars in Sheffield.
classic rock in The Nelson
punk/nu-metal etc etc in the Dove and Rainbow
if you like sports then the best place to watch in in Walkabout on West st.
oh and there is a French meet this week
info here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=60537)
Sheffair1 19-09-2005, 07:33 Over the last week, the Deep End is under new management, (someone who is into live music and quality of service). Things are improving!!.
The shakey is a fine pub, it gets busy weekends, and due to it being a small pub gets a little cramped...but weekdays it is nice and quite in the evenings...live football on the big TV, with quite music playing the the background, only the locals come in and the atmosphere is great
How the shakey and the blueball can be compared is beyond me, i have worked in the shakey for about 6 months, and have only ever seen 1 "fight" which involved one guy pushing the other and that was it  shakey always gets a bad influence because of the pubs around it, which i don't think is fair because it really is a nice pub, weekends for the younger crowd, weekdays for when you want a quiet pint and a chat :)
sheldon1973 28-09-2005, 22:56 Florent, you say you live on langsett road........Get yersen int BURGOYNE.
