But the good part about Gmail was never the storage amount (for me anyway), it's that the way it works and the interface is light years ahead of Hotmail (and every other online mail I've seen).

Gmail is just another web based email system, same as hotmail really, except it has a large storage capacity so you dont need to keep deleting your emails.

Gmail (http://www.gmail.com) is Google's new email service.. It hasn't been fully launched to the public yet, hence having to send invites to people.

Another advantage of Gmail is that it likes attachments in emails, Hotmail IMO is crap with attachments.

imo Theres nothing special about it really. If I need space then theres space on my hard drive to store stuff.

Wasnt there a report a while back saying that it may be spyware orientated?

If you have a Gmail account, you can use Google Talk (http://www.google.com/talk) Which IMO > Skype and MSN.

With Google Talk you can call other users for free, just like having a phone on your PC.. Skype makes you pay for calls :gag:

Gmail 'invites' are a very clever marketting device ...

It is pretty clever, as the people with the invites feel that they are 'special', when as a matter of fact absolutely anyone can get a Gmail address if they want one.

Gmail also has the advantage of being able to embed your mail account into the Google search engine page. Plus a huge variety of other information available on the same page.

So how would a noob get a gmail account if they dont know anyone else with one?

You cant simply sign up the same was as hotmail and yahoo mail.

Sure, and it has an air of exclusivity about it. You can't get a GMail account without an invite, making GMail accounts all the more desireable (you want what you can't have, or what's harder to get).

It seems nothing more that a clever way of getting you to involve your friends in their free web based EMail.

Viral Marketting?

I think the main reason people rushed to get accounts when it first started was to get in before all the good usernames were taken up (well, thats why I got one early on anyway). After all, who wants johnsmith22099875@gmail.com, most people would rather have just plain old johnsmith@gmail.com.

On the subject of eMail addresses, I know of two people with Telewest's Blueyonder service who have really odd addresses such as: df00968756777hgh7@blueyonder.co.uk - is this usual?

surely friendfirstname.lastname (or accountname@by.co.uk) would be OK?

:)

Yeah, when you 1st sign up with blueyonder, you get a default email address, but it can be changed very easily.

You don't need an invite, Googlemail in the UK hasn't required an invite for quite a while now.

The date on the original thread goes back to 2005. Rich has probably opened up an alias account for an April Fools joke or something.

Yes, and back then you had to be invited to open a Gmail account.

Just sent Jabbers an invite.

I wouldn't do that, duplicate accounts are one of THE main things that get you banned on here.
