Depending on how old you are and the skills that you may have, can I recommend VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) or teaching English in a foreign country.

They are great ways to make a clean break, make new friends, give you a new outlook and widen your horizons.

i have done it a couple of times...legged it abroad for a year, changed cities three times...

It all boils down to one conclusion though, the more you do it the more restless you become and the more you wanna do it! But I'd love to have the guts to do it again...foreign countries are calling me..

But what about my job and my rent and my family...grrr. I wish I had two lives running together simultaneously

Oh I went to teach English in India a few years ago, I did it privately cuz companies like VSO take a cut so if you want advice on that then I can help and recommend some schools etc and you don't need any qualifications

Just to clarify something:

VSO is not a company that "takes a cut".

If you want to teach English you can do it through a variety of agencies, companies or charities. It is possible to enjoy a reasonable standard of living while seeing different countries.

There are good and bad amongst them all and you should take good advice before accepting an offer. Talk to people like 'intooblivion' who may have first hand experience.
I think 'Fareast' is another member currently teaching in China.

VSO on the other hand is a charitable aid organisation which provides volunteers with a variety of skills to a variety of placements in developing countries.
They usually only provide a local allowance. You might even draw on your savings for little luxuries.

VSO's website is here:

Do it! I've done it a few times. It's even easier now with t'internet but I just phoned, looked in books, got a job abroad and went. It's even the reason I'm in Sheffield, I got bored in my comfort zone so got a job and rented a room and came here!
But it does give you itchy feet......

i feel like doing this more and more everyday. its probably why i always feel the need to be booking or thinking about my next holiday - i'm having four this year! and no i'm not rich, doing them all on the cheap.

my friend has just gone off to dubai working for 18 months. she is a midwife and there are so many jobs out there in the medical profession where you can earn so much money. there are also other jobs available - working in hotels, restaurants, bars etc. very very appealing.

I've done it and I've never looked back.

As the old cliche goes; we regret most the things we didn't do.

Reckon I could do it. Maybe not abroad but a different city definitely. Sort of exciting - the prospect of starting in a new place.

YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT REALLY.WELL DONE FOR HAVING THE GUTS TO TRY AND CHANGE YOUR SITUATION.THERE ARE A FEW GOOD POSTS TO CONSIDER.

THINK OF SOMETHING YOU ARE GOOD AND AND CHOOSE SOMETHING THAT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY.FIRSTLY YOU MUST DECIDE WHATS MAKING YOU UNHAPPY OR MAKING YOU FEEL LIKE YOU NEED A CHANGE.

GOOD LUCK.

Im hoping to pack up and make a fresh start, Ive been trying to move to Sheffield for ages now but the council housing system is a joke, so I have put my name down on a load of forums for a council house exchange.

Ive had quite a few interests but the areas or the houses were not very nice.

Ive recently just had another contact from a couple in Darfield, Barnsley that showed some interest and I am really hoping this one goes well cos the house is lovely the area is really nice and the local school looks perfect for my son.

I dont want to get too excited cos these things always have a way of falling through, but I really hope it works out cos then I can escape and start afresh.
