View Full Version : Lion' Lair: new menus
Just a quick note to let you all know that new food and drink menus will be starting on Tuesday at The Lion's Lair.
Some of the old favouries are staying but look out for some new cocktails and some top notch homemade food dishes that are being added.
Watch this space for off peak offers on meals...
mr.blaze 09-09-2005, 00:10 You forgot to mention the bar staff ladies are bootifull :D
You are correct J-Blaze but we are not Spearmint Rhino. We pride ourselves on good food and good drink all served up in a friendly atmosphere.
Every day (except Sunday) between 5pm and 9pm, you can try any 2 main courses with a bottle of house wine for £20. This is by reservation only until we get the voucher on the website. To reserve a table call us on 0114 2634264 and quote SHEFFIELDFORUM in order to take advantage of the offer.
This offer will end on 30/09/05.
Where is the Lion's lair? Sounds like a good offer.
Zip.
The Lion's Lair is situated on Burgess Street which is the street next to John Lewis (same side as Kingdom). It's opposite the car park entrance/exit at the back of the store.
the lions lair - aka the cat litter used to be the Yorkshire Mans Arms, fantastic rock pub completely ruined and turned into another 'cool' wine lounge bar? Like Sheffield needs another one of them - bring back the yorky arms PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here Here!!
And another thing Lions lair...the last time I looked you were a PUB, when I go into a PUB i do not expect to be asked if I would like a table for two, I expect to find my own table and then order food should I wish to do so.
used to call in for half a leffe or two and perhaps a snack .....not been back for over a year since that happened....
Speedy_Jim 14-09-2005, 12:25 I quite like what they did to the place. Sure, it's a bit pretentious sometimes but it's clean and friendly. Hope the new menu's better than the old - each time I've eaten there I've been disappointed. Pub grub at restaurant prices
littleboo 14-09-2005, 12:31 Pub grub at restaurant prices
I think that that is their problem...trying to be something that they aren't in a back street pub, it doesn't work.
I didn't mind it before although a little pretentious, I used to go in the Yorkshire man often and it was still the same old place even though they had tarted it up. but to be pestered into buying grub when you just want beer... it certainly left a bad taste in my mouth!!!
point is - sheffield doesnt need another trendy lounge bar/pub - yorkey arms was packed to the rafters when the 'rockers' frequented it, whether it had good food or not, as long as the pies were warm we were happy!!!
Wow!
I didn't expect to come back to the computer and find that. I didn't think there is anything like Lion's Lair in the city centre. Can you tell me exactly where these places are please?
oh please.............. every other nice old back street pub that has now been 'refurbed', painted magnolia, stick a few leather settees in, some fresh flowers - thats what the 'cat litter' now is.
Fancygirl 14-09-2005, 13:54 Oh dear! - I do feel the need to come to the defence of ccellis and the Lion's Lair (well I am fancy, after all ;-)) as it is a nice friendly place with really good food. BUT it is just a bit daft to claim that they are unique in the City Centre - What about the Wig and Pen? Muse? Sola? etc etc etc
As for there being no nice back street pubs left , seems to me that there are still far too many authentic s**t-holes in Sheffield - come for a pub-crawl in Woodseats if you want proof! Bring on the leather sofas! Please!...
Greenback 14-09-2005, 13:55 If you don't like being asked if you want a table, perhaps you're a little too sensitive to be spending time in a public house full stop ;)
I like the Lion's Lair, what's wrong with decent pub food in nice, traditional surroundings? There aren't very, very few places in the centre that even do decent food, let alone in such a non-pretentious atmosphere.
my point wasnt about it being authentic or that the food wasnt good, just that the yorkey arms was good as it was - a rockers pub with a good jukebox, good DJ's and a good pint. im not knocking 'cool' bars/pubs just that there are way too many already.

If you mean a poshish pub that sells food there is :
All Bar One
Wig & Pen
Lloyds #1
Sola
Bar Ha Ha (though I would rather starve than eat there)

No not really I just like a pub to be a pub, and fine if it serves food its not a problem, but I don't want to be made to feel like I have to eat surly that should be my decision. if I wanted restaurant service I certainly wouldn't visit a pub.
It's plain that the lions lair although its ok, is trying too hard, I have spoke to other people with regard to this and they to think its pushy!! back off let people make up their own minds. we know you serve beer and we know you serve food if we want to combine the two I'm sure that the majority of us are capable of taking that life changing option!!

wouldn't it be nice to go back to the good old days when we still shared bathwater...
Personally, I wouldn't eat anywhere that charges £8 for bangers and mash, thats just taking the p*ss.

That's fair enough, really. I suppose that's the main problem with gastropubs, a little too much "gastro" at the expense of the "pub". Anyway, you should let the management know, they'll probably be glad of the feedback!
I will agree that Wig & Pen is similar. How many of these are chain pubs and how many are independent ideas that have been worked at to make them that little bit different. So of the independent bars/pubs, whatever, which sell real ale and have a beer garden?
I don't think Lion's Lair is totally unique but I do think that it gives the customer options in the city centre that other places can't do individually.
I really didn't want to start a war on here by posting an offer for visitors/members to the Sheffield Forum. At least it's given some people a chance to air their views. Maybe if enough people want it, the Yorkshire Arms can be brought back.
In response to people walking in and being offered a table or a menu; good news, the staff are doing their jobs properly. If you don't want it, just say no thank you.
neeeeeeeeeek 15-09-2005, 08:29 I like the place and shall endevour to take advantage of this offer. If the food is crap I shall rant about it on this thread!!
:D
Regardless of the food, I shan't be visiting after the disgraceful way they cancelled our work Christmas party booking last year

That's easy. I'll tell you. The pub used to be run by some gay guys who didn't want the rockers in. During the week it was dead and often closed at teatime.
Sass and I spoke to the brewery about it and they agreed to let us get the place rocking again. They showed us plans for turning it into a wine bar which we looked at but said we weren't interested in as we preferred the rock venue. The brewery were insistant on converting it as it was dying on its feet.
We took it on and virtually doubled the takings in the first month. As soon as word spread that we'd taken it over the rockers returned at weekends. We put on open mic nights and other events during the week and it became really busy again.
The brewery had invested quite a lot into the plans and decided to press ahead with the refurb and for it to be the wine bar so we left and opened up the Classic Rock Bar the following month taking the rockers with us.

The trouble there is that the lease on the building, coupled with the business rates and extortionate prices that breweries charge for ale pushes prices up. The only way to claw back costs is to charge a lot of money for burgers and chips. I do feel for city centre pubs. I remember how much the Council tax was each month on the Yorkshireman's! Ridiculous considering the size of the place
here here classic rock - its not been the same since you left!!! Sportsman does ok as does Nelson and Moorfoot Tavern. Hmmm three good rock venues as opposed to HOW MANY WINE BARS AND LOUNGE ROOMS!!!!.

chips are chips, the only difference at the Lions is the pretentious prices.
MuteWitness 15-09-2005, 20:30 people are to willing to pay loads for a meal even though its not always very good, no one demands value anymore? these pub owners must be laughing at us, its like your local indian putting up the price of korma to £8 and charging £4 for rice.

If you're after pub grub you can either pay six quid at your local pub for an awful meal or eight quid at the Lion's Lair for much, much better food. Can't fault it to be honest.
I have to agree with greenback on that one. There are plenty of pubs serving rubbish food for a fiver - sometimes two for a fiver! Just go to one of the others if you don't appreciate the extra effort that goes into the food at Lions Lair.
You gets what you pays for.

I can't help but think of Alanis Morrisette when I read your posts and look at the name you use.
It must be horrible being surrounded by all those spoons when all you need is a knife. DAMN CUTLERY!!!!! Grrrrrr.....
Thank you to those who have taken up our offer. It can't last forever so please strike while the iron's hot and get your table reserved!
Any feedback (about the food, drinks and service) would be appreciated.

Have I missed something here ?
There have been several threads asking for the names of good restaurants in Sheffield and getting so few replies that it leaves you wondering if the reason is that there just aren't any!
Thyme used to be the only one and even there the service is not what it used to be when Victoria was front of house.
For such a happening city it is surprising.
I haven't tried the Lion's Lair yet, but certainly will after reading these posts.
I agree about the lack of decent pubs, though. Was it the Raven just off Division Street? Now another Irish pub....:(
Have just returned from town having given the Lion's Lair the once over.
I'm afraid it isn't for me.
The menu looks very "Pub Grub" with the emphasis on pies and steak. Lots of heavy looking food with no fish dishes except Fried fish and chips.
No lighter main dishes at all.
Perhaps a good place for those with huge appetites not concerned about their calorie intake!
Good luck, though.
