Hi, live just around the corner from it!?
The pub re-opening can't be seen as too bad as in theory it should stop vandals hanging around, climbing on the roof etc. However hopefully the landlord or lady will be a good one to keep the riff raff out? To be honest think they should just bulldoze it;)
They once did a bunjy jump from a crane there :loopy:

The pub in question is in the Manor/Woodthorpe area. Just down the road from Lidl.

I once spent New Years Eve in the Springwood, after the landlord of The Richmond (nearby grotty boozer) threw everyone out and closed the pub at 11:30 because everyone was making too much noise.

I assume the pub has had a long and distinguished career and can only say that pic must of been taken several years ago. I never dared go in the place as the 'atmosphere' of the area leaves somrthing to be desired but I did on many occasions walk a dog on the field going up the side of the place towards the bit of the city I call Woodthorpe.

Alright maybe they just got a day when the sun was shining which always makes things look better. The atmosphere of the area could feel a bit dodgy. I used to walk down across the field and stand at the covered bus stop just along from the pub and saw on different occasions stolen motor bike being raced up and down the road, a gang of seven year olds? picking on a single kid, kicking him off his bike and then running off with it and then coming back a few minutes later and throwing the front wheel at the lad who was sat crying on the kerb. The shops up the road, battered and pounded by yobs and vandals and sometimes a meeting point for a gang of kids who'd just sit there on the steps staring at you as you walked past. The numerous burnt out cars in the woods behind the old college, the pillar box that got blown up, the telephone box that got blown up and the bus driver who had half a house brick chucked through the windscreen.
I was once on the field talking to a local dog owner and it sounded as though world war three was breaking out in one of the houses that back on to the field and the local said it was always like that, raised voices, a woman screaming kids shouting and crying all at loud volumnes and with fantastic amounts of swearing and things breaking and the local guy didn't seem in the least concerned. This was all about four years ago though so maybe things have changed.

It's not changed which is a pity!
Chav planet is how we refer to that corner and now I avoid driving down Hastilar Rd as often as possible. The Top end of Hastilar is OK and it appears that some of the occupiers up there have aspirations, but the further you get down the road the worse it becomes. The council should evict the whole lot of the trouble making element ,giving those who want to improve the area an opportunity to do so

I (known as Slim) was manager at The Springwood from late 1969 to 1975. Unfortunatley I had to bar Tommy, he was a nice bloke sober but couldn't hold his drink. Tommy's son Pete worked for me, I knew all the family, none of them ever said anything to me about being related to Bruce Ismay I doubt if they were. Where did you get your information ?

I can certainly tell you all that yes the springwood has it's characters good and bad but the landlord will not tolerate any trouble inside or outside the pub at all .

The Pub has been re-decorated and is due to undergo a major refurb if all goes well in the up-coming months. The pub has also had a state-of-the art security system installed and is well lit so any trouble outside the pub can be monitored (remotely and internally) and the appropriate actions taken.

I must also remind those that "live" on the estate behind the pub, have no quabbles when the pub organises children's parties easter, christmas etc and is very generous with it's contributions towards the funding of these events. Not to mention that the pub is involved with charity functions for the Children's hospital (the bungee jump held last year) all proceeds go there, in addidition to collectoins and tips that go to other charities as well.

And finally, did any of you go there last year when they held a fantastic evening on bonfire night - the fireworks were spectacular, food provided and overall a good night. It was that busy (and successful) that the road was closed due to the amount of people attending.

Now I'm not defending everyone that goes in there, as there has been some right twonks - but when efforts are made such as what is being and they aren't recognised well............... that just cheeses me off. I appreciate we all have an opinion but are those opinions based on recent information or hearsay of days gone by? I wonder?

If any judgement is to be based and then posted potentially damaging an already "dubious" reputation of the springwood (which is trying and will succeed in making a difference to it's reputation) base your opinions on current events - go in and have a pint.

There's no such thing as a bad pub,it's all down to the dross that go in them that give's em a bad name,I used to drink in the Springwood in the 60's & 70's and it was no different to any other pub anywhere in the world, let the riff raff in and you've got trouble, kick the sh*t's out and you've got a nice pub again.

I live just nbetween the pub and those shops and they are both a nightmare, would never walk past either on my own.

Swiller
22-02-2006, 12:54
The landlord has kicked all of the "dross" out and it is a good atmosphere - not looking over your shoulder etc. There's a lot of effort already gone into the place with decor, events etc. A further £90,000.00 refurb in the very near future which will add to this and improve on what has been done already.

A peson's perception of a place is different to the reality - before slating try it! - I'm sick of people who say " I live on this estate and so on and this is rubbish etc." Ignorance is bliss aint it? People who have never been in and enjoyed it and returned is becoming a regular thing - with ex-locals coming in again.

Bad pubs attract that don't they?

Yes it is a bad estate at the moment - but without people or or businesses making an effort to help the community around it it will remain that way, stop hissing and contribute - as the pub does a lot for local kids, Christmas parties, easter bonnets, charity bunjee jumps, raflles for ENABLE and FABLE and so on.

The police are actively making visits just to ensure customer's and people around it are seeing their presence on the estate. Unfortunately, all you get is the chin waggers saying "ooo the police were there again today - has someone been shot????????"

That's my nagging done - I say a job well done to the landlord and staff at the Springwood the finest establishment in the area. if you don't like it go to the Richmond or Highnoon - better still, I'd stay in!!!!!!

Hi

Cheers Alli

I do the karaoke at the Springwood on Wednesdays, but only just started so it's more of a practice session for me mixed with a bit of bingo - and a laugh all round!

There is some flats further up the road opposite the Springwood (up Spinkhill Road). There is quite a few near the top - as I went for one before getting my current dwelling!

Any ways, get your assess down to the Springwood and sing some songs! plus play bingo with Pie n Peas - Mmmmm...... LOL! - But it really is a good night!

Ok, my ten penneth

I have lived with this pub as my neighbour for 8 years. I can say on one occasion a few years back there was a dreadful night of trouble. New years eve it was when someone was terribly injured but in 8 years apart from the odd barney I can say without dought that I have no bother with the pub at all.

Their function room and I are in spitting distance of eachother and yes just sometimes the music gets a bit much with people in and out of the back doors BUT..thats rare and by 11pm the music is turned down and normal life resumes.

I have spoken to John, the new manager, hes a good bloke who is TRYING very HARD to raise the pubs profile both for his profits and for the local community. I applaude his efforts and and greatful for the security added to the back of the pub.

**** sticks doesnt it, what a shame when someone is trying to do the right thing and give the local community what they need, somewhere that is family based and caters for all, come on guys, lets give the new Springwood a chance, its a beautiful building and please god will be the perfect haunt for a sunday afternoon with the family soon.

My area is 'interesting' your right about that, but again dont tar all with the same brush peeps, you get the odd trouble everywhere these days not just on the Manor, so quit pulling us down all the time !!

We do have feelings you know !!!

Good luck John, behind ya all the way....In more ways than one !!! lmao

I was born and brought up in Woodthorpe, which wouldn't be Woodthorpe without the Springwood (being as they bull-dozed our local called the Woodthorpe)and are probably thinking of doing the same to the High Noon.

I remember the days when everybodies snotty nosed ( and I mean green snot not snooty) kids used to wait outside the springwood for their mams and dads on Firday and Saturday nights !!! it was a great Guying place -always raised enough to buy some bangers from Les and Elsies newsagents !!!

I live a stones throw away and have always felt that i dont have a "local" as such because i thought that the springwood would be one of those pubs where u walk in and everyone stops and stares at you!

If the new landlord has turned the place around and the atmosphere is ok then me and my fella might take a walk down there one night
