I'm saddened to hear this, he was another big part of my childhood, him and his creation, "Silly Ass" Lord Charles. even though he reached a reasonably decent age, it's still sad to hear aboutof parts of your childhood memories going... :(

You silly arse!
That was his catch phrase (not "Silly Ass")
Sad news though. He was part of a more innocent age of entertainment when we would sit and watch a man talking to himself while manipulating a wooden doll. :hihi:

You said that without moving your lips:hihi:

Gottle o' geer, anyone? :hihi:
A lovely act and fond memories.
Don't try this at home (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3Zn3M-WMzM)
Jabberwocky 25-05-2010, 08:08 Yeah brings back a few memories for me too and I`m slightly saddened at times like this because these entertainers who gave us such fun when we were kids are so easily forgotten until we hear of their death years down the line.

I wasn't sure if the full spelling was allowed on a family-friendly forum, mojoworking, also I wasn't totally sure whether "Lord Charles's" comment sounded like "arrrrsss" because of the upper class accent. (like Glass glaaaarsssss, bath/ Baaaaarrth, etc)
as Jabbers said, these were big chunks of our childhood, that are disappearing, and it's sad.
Ray Alan was one of the most talented ventriloquists going; with many others, you always saw their mouths moving, a lot, and many were really poor at their so-called "Art"... RA wasn't - he was a class apart.. He actually made Lord Charles' character believable. The Upper-class accent was wonderfully done.
I've heard that Lord Charles is having a minute's silence in his memory.
Lord Charles was asked about the death and he said "i am absolutely speechless"
foxydebs 25-05-2010, 19:03 damn daft lad you bet me to that one.
LibertyBell 25-05-2010, 19:14 What a strange act he had. He must have been a very private person - his wikipedia entry is very thin on detail.
Time takes another piece of our childhoods. (for us middle aged folk).
RIP
rubydazzler 25-05-2010, 19:25 It was 'silly ass', PT, you were right. Pronounced with the long 'a'. We used to have to say 'silly donkey', we weren't allowed to say 'ass' ;)
Another part of our childhood and youth has passed away. How sad, it was such an innocent age, looking back. Entertainers managed to get laughs without resorting to foul language every other word. :)

Not according to the Guardian:
The snobbish, monocled and apparently perma-sloshed Lord Charles has uttered his final cry of "You silly arse!".

In any case "ass" pronounced with a long "a" is indistinguishable from "arse"
rubydazzler 25-05-2010, 22:59 The Guardian! Those plebs, what do they know about correct pronunciation. *shrug* I think people today actually do think it IS arse.
One of my old London bosses in the 70s used to say it a lot ... I once transcribed it as 'arse' and he was mortified that anyone thought he was actually saying 'arse' :D Luckily we picked it up at the proof reading stage.

The implication and execution was always "arse" even if it may have been repeated as "ass" in polite society.
Perhaps you're still dazed and confused after seeing Keef in all his 70s elegantly wasted glory on TV the other night? :hihi:

The word for a donkey - ass - was pronounced as 'arse' in polite society until around the time of the yuppies and then the whole world went to hell in a handcart and the power of speech was totally corrupted! :D The concept of 'riding an ass' was entirely different in those days. ;)
