Me and me Dad used to go in every Wednesday night for the quiz, till about 4 months ago when the pub changed hands... The new Landlord did some stuff that put a lot of the regulars off, like he put the prices up straightaway, and he also made the quiz a LOT harder than it was when Mick and Cath used to do it, and as I mentioned that didn't sit well with a lot of folk who've been going in the pub for Donkey's years and a lot of them have just stopped going in, Dad and I included, we now go to the Robin Hood's quiz on a Wednesday night.

I'm not even sure if they (Crown and Glove) do food nowadays, I know Mick and Cath used to but I don't know if they still do now that the pub's changed hands.

That being said though, even with the problems I've mentioned that have killed off a lot of the top house (local name for Crown and Glove)'s custom, it's still probably one of the best pubs in Stannington, cos the Sportsman has gone so downhill it's changed hands twice in the space of a year, the Hare and Hounds is shut, the Deerstalker's also shut, and Minnie's (Rose and Crown), I don't think many go in there to be honest.. Oh there's the Peacock as well that does good meals, they just don't listen when you tell 'em "no peas" with your Scampi and chips :loopy:

I notice the Hare and Hounds has shut.

Can't say I'm surprised - it has gone to the dogs of late having suffered from a whole series of cowboy/fastbuck landlords who don't run it properly.

The last landlord was always trying to sell vacume cleaners etc in a sort of 'nudge nudge - ask no questions' sort of way. Very strange.

Top House is much more of a village pub although there is room for improvment. At least being so high up the hill it tends to deter some of the less desireable types from down on the estate.

Yeah that's the good thing about the Top House, no chavs, and nobody who goes in, apart from maybe the bar staff, and of course me formerly, is under 40..

Do any pubs up that way do real ale?
Was thinking about having a walk around the pubs up there, but doesn't sound like its worth it.

Try the Anvil Meaks, they always have 2 good cask beers on, and were awarded pub of the month for August by CAMRA. I reckon the only 2 pubs in S6 which take real ale seriously are The Anvil and The Robin Hood.

I know the Anvil quite well although not been for a while, its only a short walk from Malin Bridge. I used to go to the quiz sometimes on a Tuesday. Heard good reports about the Robin Hood, but its a bit of a trek if there aren't any other pubs around there.

I went into the Sportsman and Hare and Hounds a couple of years ago when it was the Stannington carnival and found them both to be a bit dire. :)

Most of the estate scum who go in the sportsman et al wouldn't like real ale, cos it's not the usual chavvy tipple like Stella, White Lightning etc..

Not that I'm suggesting everyone who drinks Stella Artois is a chav.. Hell even I drink it occassionally, and contrary to certain people's beliefs, I am most definitely NOT a chav.

Shurrup D2J! :P

Anyway yeah the Robin Hood or the Anvil are your best bets for proper real ale in Stannington.

I spent many a 'college day' in The Anvil between 1986 and 1988. Top boozer in the old fashioned, no nonsense sense.

They used to serve brilliant John Smith's and better still, Magnet. They used to have a decent juke box too. Food was good and cheap but then in 1987, I guess it was.

I also remember the johnny machine in the gents being sold out. Someone had put sellotape over the coin slot and written 'Use clingfilm instead'.

Ah, college days eh?

Yes,and it's still a top boozer. The Magnet is still excellent ( hence my username), and can be bought either chilled or cellar temperature. The landlord is one of the old school who actually knows about beer and cares about the quality of the stuff he sells.

you need to show your bus pass before your allowed into the crown and glove. Robin Hood's gone down hill fast.
