Hi guys,

I know lots of people have asked this before, but I'm starting a new job in Sheff shortly and haven't a clue about finding somewhere to live!

I'm looking to rent a one bedroom flat or a smallish house, where's the best area to look into? I suppose I'd fall into the 'young professional' bracket and will be working in the city centre, so need some good transport links 2 and fro. I would like somewhere quiet-ish and would probably like somewhere 'leafy'.

Also, I'll be working close to the main train station. Would there be any benefit to me from going to the outskirts and train-ing it in everyday?

Thanks all - really need some good advice!

:help:

Hiya. I moved to Sheffield 6 years ago and I love it.

I've said this on here before but as a newcomer, you can't beat Ecclesall Road/Hunters Bar. I lived on the outskirts when I first moved here but felt really isolated, so moved to Ecclesall Road and it was great.

There's a lovely, big park and Botanical Gardens too - so you'll be alright for leaves!! :hihi:

You'll be able to walk into town from there as well. But there's regular transport so it'd take 10 mins to get a bus into town from the top of Ecclesall Road.

Crookes is lovely too. Both areas have great amenities and transport links.

Where are you going to be working - I work just opposite the train station myself.

Good luck! Hope it goes well ....

Hey Hedie,

Thanks for your advice. Apparently the areas you suggested can be quite 'studenty' - whether that's a bad thing or not I don't know! I'm not especially bothered about students - have you ever had any problems to speak of?

What is the housing like around there (lots of terraces, etc...) Ah, a botanical garden - lovin the leaves!

:hihi:

I'll be working in the DfES building, moorfoot.

If you fancy 'training it' you could do a lot worse than Woodhouse

We like it here for the convenience for town, M1, M'hall, trains (as we travel to Scotland regularly from here), open fields for dog walking, woodland, nature reserve, Crystal Peaks, need I go on? ;)

PM me if you like :) (If you've more than 5 posts)

Woodhouse location (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&GridE=-1.35920&GridN=53.36490&lon=-1.35920&lat=53.36490&search_result=Woodhouse%20Station%2CSouth%20Yorksh ire&db=freegaz&cidr_client=none&lang=&place=Woodhouse+Station,South+Yorkshire&pc=&advanced=&client=public&addr2=&quicksearch=woodhouse+station&addr3=&scale=100000&addr1=)

You might want to avoid the Badger estate BTW ;)

Yes - these areas are pretty studenty in certain parts. I guess the further you go up Ecclesall Road South and up towards Ranmoor/Fulwood the less so - Although these are pretty pricey.. But gorgeous places - very leafy and quiet. We rented up there and we couldn't fault it - it's beautiful (other than not being able to afford to buy there!!)

I'd say mostly S10 & 11 are a mix of student and residential. I guess the student population helps in that there are loads of great pubs, restaurants, shops and amenities Though I read last night Broomhill has a 40% student population so you may want to watch out there!

The place you'll be working is just at the bottom of Ecclesall Road so I dare say you'd be able to walk in if you lived in that area.

Housing is generally terraced but there are quite a few flats avaialble if you look - we always rented flats until we bought a house in June.

We now live in Crookes which we love - wouldn't want to be anywhere else! Again, great amenities and everything you could possibly need on the doorstep. Plus easy access into town. To be honest, we've never really noticed or been bothered by students up here. Our street is lovely and quiet.

Hey guys,

Cheers for the advice - it all helps when getting some bearings! I'll have a gander around those areas and see what I can find.

Hi there,

We may have just what you are looking for...

A property on Sharrowvale Road, Hunters bar area, near the Botanical Gardens and Endcliffe park. It is a 3 bedroom property so you would be sharing with two other young professionals. Rent is £280 per month per person (exc bills and tax). Fully furnished. 20 min walk to city centre. It also has a bike shed which is handy and parking across the road.

If you are interested you can call the landlady (Ros) on 0114 2681033 or 01142685538 during office hours.
