View Full Version : Warning - Incoming American!
Hi All, I am new to the forum. It looks like a really active community and I look forward to hear what people have to say.
It seems I'll be moving to Sheffield toward the end of the summer, along with my wife and four kids. Yes, that is four kids. We thought we were having our third (and final) and were surprised with tiwns! I wouldn't trade them for the world, but I digress.
I am writing to solicit any and all advice, tips, or thoughts about moving to Sheffield from the US. Believe it or not, I actually look forward to the weather in the UK since the winters in my home town are brutal...
I've been to Sheffield a handful of times, but most of my time has been spent in the city centre so I don't really know much about the surrounding area. I'm keen to know more about which neighborhoods are good for families, schooling, things to do with the kids, or anything else you have to offer.
Advice on good pubs is also welcome! I'm a real ale lover and a fan of the Rutland Arms and Devonshire Cat.
Thanks in advance!
Hello and welcome to the forum.

themissus 02-06-2010, 19:38 my best friend lives here now after moving from Oklahoma and she's been here for 11 years now - what does that tell you?
rubydazzler 02-06-2010, 19:44 Welcome Otto! Woodseats/Norton and Sheffield 8 generally, is a good middle income family area, but a lot depends on where you'll be working and what sort of house you see yourself living in.
See what you mean about the winters...they are very harsh, but it's cracking fun going to the local store on a snow mobile.:hihi:
Personally I think you chose well..Sheffield is a fantastic place once you settle in. Surrounded by some of the most spectacular countryside in the world, countryside which is also harsh in the winter.
Believe me you won't move anywhere if you listen to hatefreak racist poppins. She's an ex UK rarity you know.
When you get here drop me a message..will be only to happy to introduce you to a few local pubs that sell a vast range of ales. Don't take it personel in the wrong way when you get here...you might get called love by rather beefy blokes, it's a term of affection rather than "drop yer pants":D
Anyway..as has been said by others...a very warm welcome.

Brits hate yanks ?!?!?!
since when ?
I always get a wonderful reception when visiting Sheffield!
Wednesday supporters like Yanks too!!
Thank you to everyone who replied! I had no idea since I've only been notified via e-mail on about every fifth message.
I have been received warmly by Sheffielders (?) the four times I've been there. So while I think there are stereotypes and preconceptions about Americans, and when aren't there about any group of people, I have never had trouble. I am certain that I have done things that would normally be considered rude in the UK (unbeknownst to me of course) but I have been given a bit of lattitude due to cultural differences. And if I do or say something stupid, I'm happy to hear it since it will help me understand the cultural rules. Anyhow, I'm starting to sound like and anthropologist (which I am not) so I'll stop there.
We'll be arriving in 4-6 weeks, and the entire family is very excited, even the 8 and 10 year old. Or should I say even my wife - since I think she is most impacted by the upheaval.
I think we're going to settle in S10 or the surrounding communities, so any tips on what to do with a pair of two year olds will be much appreciated.
Thanks again!
