View Full Version : Hillsborough Park Flora
As the sun was out and i was feeling slightly under the weather i took a stroll to Hillsborough Park in the aim to get macro stuff. Got talking to some mounted Police women, one of which enjoyed her photography. I did eventually get my macros.
Decided i just wanted to shoot 1:1 ratio. Im thinking extension tubes to get even more detail, possibly going to 2:1 on the sensor size. Prefered to take the 50D today as the 5D lack of crop factor meant wouldnt have got as close!

Starlet83 23-05-2010, 17:59 Dont really know much about photography to be honest but great pics!
Dont worry HarryMac. Its getting to be expected, i rather have no posts than 'nice pics' with no reason as to why (Starlet83 excluded ;) ). Or even why they are crap?
Rant time:
I do get worried when a forum like this, which has quite a following praises work which is average in my very humble opinion. It also seems that people come on here and aim to get something for nothnig when there are people trying to make a living from it. For the scroungers, would you expect not to be paid for what you do (mates and families aside of course if applicable). For the those that do work for free, price for your ability, people will walk over you and just expect it to be free.
From the Shots above a good Friend of mine in America wants 2 prints doing and sent to her. I said dont worry i will do it free (Giving the file and she can print there), she refused and has paid normal rates plus delivery. She understands as she works freelance etc and wouldnt expect a freebie.
Food for thought?
(oh and Starlet, thanks :) )
HarryMac 24-05-2010, 08:31 Many congrats on the sale. Talking of sales, I am covering a wedding in July. I had an email from the couple a couple of days since asking if I would sell them Highway to heaven on a large print and possibly two others as well after they have had a good look through my flickr.
For just £15 per annum I have had 8 shots published in this years North lincs tourist info brochure, 1 shot in the process of being published in Artical, an Arts and culture mag and some print sales......to me, well worth paying the small fee they ask.
Cheers, H.

Which site are you paying a fee for - Flickr?
HarryMac 24-05-2010, 13:42 Sorry if I did not explain properly Nick.......flickr.com

Not everyone does it full time and only for money, and it's possible to take very good pictures without being a professional. There are some jobs where you'd be crazy not to use a professional, like installing your gas central heating or rewiring your house, but the consequences are likely to be more serious. With photography, the worst that can happen is that you get a rubbish picture... but even then, what you consider to be a rubbish picture might be perfectly acceptable to the person who wants it. If you're doing it for a living, your selling point has to be that you would make a much better job of it, but some things don't require that level of professionalism.
If people are willing to do things for free, that's surely their business. If I mow my neighbour's lawn or give someone a lift, I don't expect to have landscape consultants and taxi drivers picketing my house.
Great pictures by the way.
you've taken that the wrong way, i have nothing bad to say about hobbyists doing it for the love of it. never will have a problem. There are great hobby photographers and i take my hat off to them. Its the people that say, i need a portfolio i will do it for free. Now they maybe the next best thing in the photographic world and good on them. What happens in that scenario is that he gets his said portfolio and then wants to charge and all his regular cleints dont use him again as they have gone with the next person doing it for free...
People will abuse the fact that many people will do it for free.. take modeling, its not free but can be done for time for prints? the photographer gets the time with the model, the model gets the prints for her portfolio. But for Joe bloggs to come along and wants a picture for their facebook/myspace, they have just got a free photo session out of someone trying to build a career. A short lived one if he cant ask for what is deserved. even a small token is better than to be taken for a ride.
People doing things for free can mean other people lose out on potential business. You are right though a professional job will (should) be done to a high standard and i certainly pride my self in providing the best i can.
If you like a the pictures taken even if they were free to start of with, give something back for their dedication and time.
Its a bit of a sore point when you bid for someones service and someone else sparks up saying they will do it for free or a back handed favour!
astraman 24-05-2010, 21:48 First of all, nice pics :hihi::hihi::hihi:
Seriously, this is a VERY good set. Perfectly exposed and cracking detail.
Particularly like #3, it's sharper than a pointy sharp thing.
As for the other points:
it does seem to be happening more and more that people are posting some average (and some pretty awful) shots and being praised for them. Everyone has to start somewhere, but how can anybody learn anything or improve if other people blow smoke up their a****s by telling them that crap pictures are good?
Has it become just a circle of friends slapping each other on the back, while totally ignoring some of the very good work that gets posted?
Why do people think it's OK to ask a photographer to work for nothing?
I take photos for fun and enjoyment. I also take photos for money. If someone wants to use my time and skills, I expect them to pay for it.
I have a neighbour who is a mechanic. He has done work on my car. I wouldn't dream of asking him to do it for nothing.
Unfortunately, most people don't realise how much work can go into producing a professional quality series of photos.
Photgraphy is like anything else - you get what you pay for.
I'm going to stop there before I end up going into a rant.
terrorfirma 24-05-2010, 22:39 Firstly, great shots. Cracking level of detail. Must admit, I found myself comparing black spots on first two shots...then I got to the bottom of your post. As for other points raised, some people believe that once the shutter release is pressed, the photo is taken and thats that.
thanks all for the comments.
sorry about the rant but something had to be said!
