Kinda hope my mini breaks soon and I can get a nano (assuming they don't do the 6 month UK delay again). rich951 08-09-2005, 19:51 Originally posted by hotphil My iTunes 5 is up and running and working fine. Kinda hope my mini breaks soon and I can get a nano (assuming they don't do the 6 month UK delay again). A friend of mine managed to break his mini a couple of weeks ago. It was repaired free of charge by Apple despite (a) being out of warranty, and (b) having been bought in the States (he brought back his and mine before you could buy them over here). So don't break it, or it might get replaced - throw it into the Don or sell it instead! :) mattyh 08-09-2005, 20:34 Originally posted by slh73 e) overpriced f) overhyped g) an ipod overpriced - not really when you consider the size of it and the fact that it has a full colour screen. overhyped - not really. iPods in general are not really advertised any more than any other personal music system. And there haven't been any adverts at all for the nano. you can hardly blame them for mentioning it on their site. an ipod - well observed. might be the best thing in the world and you wouldn't have one because of the brand? that's sensible. superted666 08-09-2005, 21:37 I think slh73 has a bee in his bonnet about anything apple. i saw him making comments to a similar nature about the new store based in meadowhall. I have a sony and a ipod (old gen one) and at the mo i am using the sony as it has better battery life plus my old ipod is a little worn. however i will be buying a ipod as soon as i can - overall the better player in my opinion. I tried to go with the rest but not convinced i think apple have this market.. well 80% of it any way Ed ANGELUS 09-09-2005, 08:14 Originally posted by slh73 e: I can afford one, hell, I could afford 2 if I wanted. Hmmm The sound is on a par with anything else out there depending on what kind of file you put on it, also better headphones enhance the quality for you! f: Ipod looks the best and just is the best.. see anti-ipod thread g: See f again.. and take your head from out of the arse of someone else who tells you what to think! After 40-odd years of having ears attached to my head i like to think i can tell the difference. they are mp3 players. not meant to provide pure sound, most only sound as good as the headphones. segasonic 09-09-2005, 10:29 One line here stands out... Originally posted by ANGELUS I have to be a sheep and go with others who dont have a clue as well. Yep, that sums up iPod buyers. I'll just point out that I'm not trying to twist your words Angelus, as the quote could be taken out of context. That line just tickled me. rich951 09-09-2005, 11:51 It does amuse me slightly to see the irony of people jumping on the bandwagon of "you only buy ipods because you're a sheep!" :) People buy ipods because they want to. Some people buy them because they look "kewl". Some people buy them because they are raving apple fanboys. Some people buy them because they give the best portable music experience. I'm perfectly aware that some players might have slightly better audio performance. But in my opinion the ipod more than makes up for that with its useability. I've owned mp3 players by other manufacturers and absolutely hated them (not to mention factors of size and weight). One simple example - how many others create smart playlists? Another simple example, compare the accessories you can buy for some brands... Personally I don't really care whether you buy an ipod or not, but please don't assume I'm a teenage girl sheep for choosing one myself - perhaps, just perhaps, I am well-informed and know what fits my particular set of needs better than you do? 40summat 09-09-2005, 12:26 Most major car manufacturers are happy to work with the apple brand, with ipod integrated Ice systems as part of the spec on new models. Merc, BMW, Volvo, wouldn't openly endorse the ipod without much thought, they have confidence in the ipod. There are many aftermarket parts and acsessories for these motors but they rarely publicly endorse them. segasonic 09-09-2005, 13:21 Don't get me wrong, I don't care if a person buys an iPod or not, nor would I turn one down. I just thought it was amusing that Angelus called the anti iPod mob 'sheep' when that label can be just as easily and inaccurately applied to 'raving apple fanboys'. spook 10-09-2005, 07:00 ............ GabbleRatcht 10-09-2005, 12:11 After 5 years as a sound engineer, I like to think that I know the difference between something that sounds good, and something that doesnt. After twenty years as a pro engineer, I know too. The ipod's sound awful. It's not the encoding or iTunes, it's just the fact that the audio output stage is rubbish. I had a Sony minidisc before my ipod, it was fab. I then bought a Sony Viao portable to replace my ipod. It too is not that good on the audio side. I have both now BTW. It now seems to be style and convinience over what it is ultimaltly about, music. Deavon 12-09-2005, 11:44 I bought one of these at Selfridges on Saturday. (The sales person was pathetic, but a friendly American tourist convinced me to get one). Let's just say it's a lot slimmer and cooler than it's owner! Mine only stores 480 odd songs (2GB). I think I should have bought a proper one for £100 more. (Also I keep picking it up when my mobile rings). Ooops. ToryCynic 12-09-2005, 11:55 My iPod story I got my first iPod at Xmas 2004, this then broke down and the Apple logo stayed permanentely on the screen; this was then replaced with a second (4G 20GB), iPod. After listening to music brilliantly from December to February, it pqcked up - it wouldn't sync with iTunes. iPod three worked brilliantly, until I reformatted drive C (music's on D), but the iPod saw it as a brand new thing, looked at me like a moron, and wouldn't accept the new music. (I was unaware that the iPod could be reformatted). iPod four came to me in April, but as I got sick of the other iPods playing up, I downgraded - to a 6 GB iPod mini - :help: - but with the rest of the remaining money, I put it towards an AVR - which I still haven't bought. :) ToryCynic 12-09-2005, 11:57 Originally posted by spook OOOOOO I had my grubby mits on one in Bluewater yesterday - I want one! They're so small it's untrue! I've been to the mac shop there many times - I like seeing all of the accessories. :) P.S: I'm not far from Bluewater. How do I change it so that I can decide what songs I want on it? 3 I subscribed to a podcast last night. Any idea when it will come? 4 Err... can't think of a 4?... Oh wait! I know: 4 Why do you still love your ipods so much when you've had so many problems with them? Did Apple sort out your replacements or did you end up out of pocket? That's a lot of breakdowns since '04! ToryCynic 12-09-2005, 13:29 Originally posted by Deavon Hello kentboy. (Should have know you'd be lurking near computer chit chat) :) OK. That's a lot of breakdowns since '04! 1) The proper HDD ones usually have poo software, or are a simple drag & drop from the music's location - not all that. 2) For the mini, I created a list of favourites, and drag and drop them into "Alex's iPod" list at the left (with the old 4G ones it had all music on). 3) My knowledge of Podcasting is low... 4) They're so great - ease of use; they kept crediting dad's card, then debiting it again for the transaction (Argos, Orpington). :) adaline 12-09-2005, 13:51 Originally posted by Deavon 3 I subscribed to a podcast last night. Any idea when it will come? It should be there now! Go to "podcasts" in your iTunes (its a purple icon of a lil person with waves coing out of his/hers head), the podcast you subscibed to should be there and you sould see a list of episodes below that (if not click on a little arrow on the left of the podcasts name). There is a button on the right side of each episodes name named "get" click that to get any particular episode you want. iTunes will automatically download the latest episode. Post back if you have problems :) kristo 15-09-2005, 11:51 In case anyone's interested Coles/John Lewis now have all varieties of the nano in stock. I've just bought a 4GB white one but don't want to open it at work for fear of colleagues with sticky fingers (not in the thief kind of way). ANGELUS 15-09-2005, 12:32 Originally posted by kristo In case anyone's interested Coles/John Lewis now have all varieties of the nano in stock. Welcome to the ipod club  mr chris 16-09-2005, 20:56 As far as I know the nano uses flash based memory (hence the even smaller size), which is slightly more expensive than the hard drives found in ipod/mini. This explains the slightly higher price (although when you factor in the colour screen it sort've evens out a bit). Flash based memory means the battery life should be phenomenal as there are no moving parts. As all mobile music formats (mp3, mp4, aac ,ogg vorbins, wma et al) use compression that makes the file around a tenth of its original size, you're never going to have perfect sound. There will always be a slight amount of tinniness or loss of bass. But what would I prefer? carrying 40 CDs around in my bag to listen to with near "perfect" sound.... *always* having to carry my bag around if I want to listen to music, or having something pocket sized that can hold six hundred albums? oooh, lemme see. I like my ipod. I got it the day it came out (4th gen) and I haven't really regretted it. So what if the battery only lasts 8-12 hours? That's what the recharger is for!! Also, when I got it ipods were an unusual sight... I used to get odd looks on the bus, and lots of bitchy comments from my fellow designers lol! iTunes is a revelation as well. :D pete_fcs 16-09-2005, 21:11 i still like tapes (those things with reels that move)... cos when you press stop the tape stops and 'magically' remembers where you left off when you press play again! :) adaline 17-09-2005, 02:36 Tapes are great! And player makes it sound as if you got something mechanical in your pants :hihi: mr chris 17-09-2005, 10:10 Originally posted by pete_fcs i still like tapes (those things with reels that move)... cos when you press stop the tape stops and 'magically' remembers where you left off when you press play again! :) but... my ipod does that... *and* my last 3 CD players did that as well!! Still, making compilation tapes was always good fun. :) Guderian 17-09-2005, 10:16 Does anyone know what the battery life on the new Nano is?? Not happy with the life on the prev generation IPods. I have a Sony NW-HD1 at the min, and am content with its 30 hour battery life. Must say the iPod Nano in black does look the biz though. I think it's rated at something like 14 hrs and will charge of a usb port. HotPhil 17-09-2005, 15:27 Yep 14hrs it is. Bare in mind that that's under Apple's test conditions. Full specs here: http://www.apple.com/uk/ipodnano/specs.html And the battery life statement is: "Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. See www.apple.com/uk/batteries for more information." |
